It can produce big sounds even. If you think im kidding because you heard the crappy demos of its awful presets check my demo Starship enterprise out at the end of February. And when you hear that synth brass sound you will understand I am not joking. Plus the entire drum track is being generated by the DX7 MK2 something a CS80 couldnt do.
A Yamaha DX7 MK2 is better than a CS80 and it doesnt weigh a tonne and need you to re-morgage your house. It cant produce big sounds like the CS80 and even complete drums from its synth engine.
I've had a SK-20 for about 15 yrs. now, and always thought it was about the best analog synth that Yamaha made, but BOY...WAS I WRONG,...THIS puppy ROCKS!!!
Too bad its way too pricey for my wallet.I also think that there will be no recreation whatsoever from yamaha at least. They are nowdays focusing to making no synths if motif doesnt count.Producing less products is apparently more cost effective. That is pretty sad if u think about the legacy of yamaha synthresizers.
@tionik06 Thought you were serious there for a minute. The CS80 is one beautiful peice of art for sure. Lots of classics recorded from it. keep on rockin bro. :)
Sounds great! Reminds me a little of the Hammond Novachord from 1939! It is really one of the most amazing poly synths ever IMHO and WAY ahead of its time! Do a YouTube search on Novachord Samples.
@MrCoenE Cheesy? I disagree! But I've never played one or been in the same room with one. Based on the samples I've heard I think the Novachord sounds great, even thought there is a lot of reverb on it (I do like reverb though ;-) The CS-80 samples in this video have a ton of reverb on them too. Do you think it also sounds cheesy without?
@JohnLRice As you said. You've only heard the processed samples. With a good reverb, a lot of stuff sounds much better then it actually is.
And no, I don't think the CS-80 sounds cheesy when heard dry (although I do like the reverb over it, I'm fond of reverb/delay too. The Novachord however just isn't that impressive when heard dry, actually quite Philicorda like, mixed with some synth-features.
@MrCoenE The Novachord can sound cheesy, but that's true of any synth. With decent programming and performance, the Novachord can sound absolutely lovely without effects.
@BlueIzzzs Motif has good presets in it, and the filters are good, but it's absolutely nothing like this! The only modern hardware synth that comes anywhere close to this is the Korg Oasys. If you've never played an Oasys, I suggest you try one.
Great sound depth but we could maybe thank too CS-80 Arpegiator module wich seems to produce a typical 80's style jazzy sound with only 3 fingers playing on keyboard... surely for lazy musicians (:>).
Anyway i love so much this early 80's jazzy sound made with electronic stuff cause it's sounds refined and "impressionist" - it smells "colored and freshly wasted" in the air or somethin (can't really explain what i feel).
That's probably because the DX-7 used Frequency Modulation (FM) Synthesis, which I personally can't stand, because FM synthesis to me sounds very "tinny/metallic" sounding, like the sounds are custom created from old rusty tin cans and sheets of metal. LOL So I'm there with ya on that one Johnny. I prefer the warmth of analog, and if not analog, then at least no FM or subtractive synthesis. Give me something with some warm true sawtooth waveforms to it. LOL
@brycelalonde --- I totally agree with ya on that Bryce. FM has fantastic clarity for bells and percussion.
I'll tell ya what... If you or anyone get a chance to check out and test an awesome soft synth VSTi, one of the best ones in my opinion is from a company called Tone2. The name of the VSTi is called Gladiator 2. Now THAT is an unbelievable work of art for sound synthesis. LOL
You can just do a search here on YouTube and watch a video on it if ya want. It's awesome!
Do you know people, i've been watching (listening) to all sorts of synths/workstations of todays genre on youtube. None of them and i MEAN ,,,NONE of them come anywhere NEAR A Yamaha CS 80
@michael72401 --cs 80 certainly is a beast, but you should give a listen to the andromeda vids--i have one and its a monster and it reminds me of the cs80 the most --2 super powerful synths
Ho my. It is everything i could want and then some.
So many people are convinced that the difference between hardware and software synths is a myth.
I hear this and i laugh. Hard.
Altough, once its digitally recorded, surely it looses that essence ? Are the 'essences' of analog only good enough for live listening or do they transfer onto digital recording ?
Sound is only digital when it's inside the computer or processor as numbers. It makes it easier to edit and process the data. When you play it back it is being converted from digital back to analog. The quality or character of the sound depends on the D/A converters.
Analog vs digital can be really confusing. There are tooo many variables. Here's my take on it:
Digital usually means vsts in todays arguments. 3 problems I've encountered-
1) Latency. Even really really tiny amounts are noticable. I notice the latency just caused by midi going from a hardware controller to my mks-80 (without a computer)
2) Digital oscillators are cpu expensive. Approximations = subpar sound.
3) Engineering quality. Today's music tech is aimed at cheap and nasty.
@neolojism I agree with what you're getting at, but as you say in your next reply, spend enough cash and you can still get high end. Lexicon's 960l reverb, a steal at $20k 8^P
OMG. At the start of this, I really thought I was listening to a lost Vangelis archive! You really have the sound and feel of this beast well and truly nailed. Kudos :-)

pros: one of the most versatile and unique analog synthesizers ever, hands down
cons: weighs 100 kilos and can go out of tune by being moved.

Makes the DX-7 sound soul less and clinical, no digital could ever approach the CS80's warmth.

chizmo7 2 years ago
So A/D and D/A can preserve a sound and make digital recording a viable option to tape recording.
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
@chizmo7
It is beyond digital.. the way which analog oscillators extend far beyond digital software is etheric.
I love digital. But also have a cs80 which is magical in sound. No way to explain.... but the complex harmonics.... you have to be there.
gavincurtis 2 years ago
I disagree. Digital *recording* is vastly different from digital *signal generation*.
The former does really depend on A/D converters.
The latter involves cpu-intensive approximations to analog oscillators, often with shortcuts to get it working on even today's machines.
That said, not all analog gear sounds nice. The CS-80 does, most likely because it cost half of what a house cost back when it was being made.
If you spent that today, you'd get a hallmark piece of engineering.
