Well, if Richards and Carter can score 100+ points in a season, than maybe I'll change my tune about them not being game breakers, but I don't see it happening. Also, the Pens lack first line wingers to play with Crosby and Malkin, unlike the Flyers who are stacked. The fact that Malkin put up 113 points in a season with guys like Fedotenko, Tyler Kennedy, etc is amazing. Richards is suited as a defensive forward (like Datsyuk) and Carter is a goal-scorer, plain and simple (like Madano).

Modano isn't the player he used to be, of course, but I agree that in his prime he was one of the purest goal scorers in the NHL. Datsyuk does it more subtly, in terms of controlling the game, since he doesn't have the offensive skill of Malkin/Crosby, but his defensive skills are amazing. I think Carter will post around the same numbers he did last season with an increase in goals, maybe, while Richards is set to break the 90 point mark.

With the Flyers, they don't have the superstar talent that the Pens have, but they still have stars in Richards and Carter, a superstar defenseman (Pronger), with an emerging star in Giroux and future star in James van Riemsdyk. The Flyers don't have the luxury of having two game breakers on their team, so they rely on offensive and defensive balance.

The Flyers haven't had a gamebreaker since Forsberg, but he couldn't stay healthy enough. Before that, it was Lindros, but it was the same thing with him. The Flyers rely on their offensive depth and now well-rounded blueline because they don't have a game breaking talent on their offense. We're hoping Giroux/JVR can develop into a counter to Sid/Geno.

i think the rivalry means more to pens fans than it does flyers fans. for years, the flyers were always better. but, it's certainly more interesting now that both teams are nhl powerhouses. the season series this year has been the closest yet. can't wait to see more and i won't be surprised if there's a rematch this spring in the postseason (and if there's a different result).
