Were you using stranded core for the patch leads, and solid for the hard wiring (since they're the same colour). Also did you use the appropriate RJ45 terminations for each type?
@ableite Meh, It takes up less space then if it were on a desk. only 19" wide and not deep at all. I know not practical, but I think it's a cool setup... Thanks for viewing
@HowCultural i don't think so - i think a nerdy hobbyist, or tech professional would take pride in a neat install - having a rat's nest of wiring makes a job look like it was done by an amateur
@nyphonejacks Eh, whatever, everyone has preferences. I don't like things being totally out of control, but I like having an "organized chaos" look to my wiring.
The title of this cracks me up for some reason... The green cables are nice, I wouldn't trust my equipment on that rack though.. How deep is the base on that aluminum rack?
@yashmhedecho21 A router "routes" traffic to its destination network (normally towards the internet in a home network) Also, it is your gateway to the internet. A switch just handles the network traffic inside the local network via the MAC addresses of the devices. Its confusing because in consumer level equipment the router normally has switch ports on the back.
I did that only used a quarter rack though and mounted it in a coat closet. Run a 24 port Gigabit Procurve and also have a 1 U server for file sharing.
I'm not going to buy equipment that I will never utilize to full potential, its just not good "business" all this crap was FREE! don't forget that. If I run across some switches and routers somebody is throwing out heck ya ill throw em in. :) P.S. "hardware" is loud... I record music in that exact same room, it has to be silent! in which it is with this stuff!
@ tikiShootah basically it's a matter of what GUI you like and what specific features you need want eg. An option for guest wireless accounts, Dynamic Dns etc.
If you have to ask you'll never understand the importance of tidy and aesthetically pleasing cabling. Read previous comments about how important this is to some.
I am a lone IT guy and my tidyness directly influences my performance so I am always incredibly picky about how cabling is managed.
May I say this is a great setup and very nicely done. Every Data Centre needs a guy like you to keep things organised, so many guys just throw cables in any old how without a thought for air flow / circulation.
Thanks guys. I professionally do network cabling/networking for a living so all of this but the server was all free (extras, "trash" etc.) you can het a roll of Velcro from home depot or lowes. The RJ cables will have to be ordered from a communications supply. (CSC, Graybar, Rexel) they are Systimax brand.
Wish I had time to clean up my setup (or even make vids of it). Nice work! I like the choice of cable coloring. Are you able to run the cabling through the walls? My Apt lets me make holes "no larger" than 1/2". I run through the attic for long runs, and then through the walls on short runs.
Man dont make shit just for show.

@nypj But you have to admit, having a big ol' mess of wires everywhere really gives you that true nerdy hobbyist feel.

If you plan on putting more heavy equipment into that rack, I'd definitely recommend a Skeletek "Steel" rack..

Where I used to work, they were tossing out hundreds if not thousands of yards of cat6 cables....they wouldn't let me take any of it home.
