This is ridiculous. First of all women do not use both sides of their brains for language any more than men do. True science has shown that 97% of ALL people, use the left hemisphere ONLY for speaking, especially among right handed persons. The other three percent do use both hemispheres, and it's a mix of both sexes. People that use both sides of their brains for lanugage = 210 million out of 7 billion. Hardly a case for superiority.

The only part of their brains that were actually physically studied was the cytoarchitectonic area TA1 inside the cortex of the planum temporale, which resides inside a very small area of the lateral sulcus. The fact that 5 women had about 12% more neurons in that area than those 4 men is not a significant piece of information.

This is ridiculous. First of all women do not use both sides of their brains for language any more than men do. True science has shown that 97% of ALL people, use the left hemisphere ONLY for speaking, especially among right handed persons. The other three percent do use both hemispheres, and it's a mix of both sexes. People that use both sides of their brains for lanugage = 210 million out of 7 billion. Hardly a case for superiority.

This is not true. The heat patterns in the brains during cat scans are verry individual. Areas that are well strained give away less heat. Our brains are only smaller because of the rule of brain mass to body mass. Because we undergo pregnancy, muscle mass and height are a certain amount less than men, for reasons of energy expenditure. For example, if we were able to make muscle in excess to what we can, then come pregnancy we'd have to dismantle it - not very energy efficient. To compensate, our neurons are thus more densely packed.

Therefore, she is speaking a true memory. If only the speech center is active, that means that the man is speaking without the aid of memory, and perhaps he is not speaking correctly.

@sexking83 Men's brains are 11-12% bigger, not 33%, idiot. We have the same no. of brain cells (around 100 billion is number we are all born with) . Men have more neurons - has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence, only that men need more neurons to control their greater muscle mass and larger body size) some women can have as many as 12% more neurons than men do.

@merle737 You should also read something before you cite it to me. Your reference, which provides no access to the supposed research done by dr.sandra witleson , says that women have 12% more neurons in a certain cortex of their brain, NOT in total.

@hhfleury Also, the source you provided me with is extremely flimsy. The study was done on 5 women and 4 men whose median age was 50. The only part of their brains that were actually physically studied was the cytoarchitectonic area TA1 inside the cortex of the planum temporale, which resides inside a very small area of the lateral sulcus. The fact that 5 women had about 12% more neurons in that area than those 4 men is not a significant piece of information.

@hhfleury No, that was another paper the search turned up. Neurologists looking at a very specific part of the brain. I don't believe that writer drew the conclusion that all of a woman's brain may have 12% more neurons than man's, from this paper you talk of. When I have more time I'll read the papers cited , rather than you just pull another paper off the web & say that's where it came from.

@hhfleury OK, I will. Is it such a burden to acknowledge the fact that our brains, whatever men & women's slight difference in size, are of a single species and are the same in performance? Back at the start, I said that women's brains just have a different way of coming to the same answer. Our difference in size is for a reason, and does not relegate us or our brains in value.

hmmm excellent point. it was also proven in the scientific revolution that men's brains are LARGER than women's brains, hence they can store/access more information. Very interesting theory about women forgetting logic because they use both centers to speak.
