  • im not a fan of the very end because it can get very confuseing later on, if you have -20/5 and you write it out as the fraction you did then the answer will be positive, but the answer is really neg, i dont like to do fractions for division as it can get very confusing when you have fractions involved, its better to learn to do -20/5 rather then the fractions but yes it does matter where the neg is, because a neg/neg is pos and a neg/pos is neg

  • @Nemeca99 No, it would not be positive. You may want to watch "Basic Math: Lesson 6 - Fractions" for a good review on how to work with fractions.

  • @videomathtutor how would it be pos? -20 / 5 is -4? how did you get it to be positive?

  • @Nemeca99 Can you be more specific? What is time code of video where this is given?

  • @videomathtutor well its more of a general quirk I have, dividing fractions is different then just dividing two numbers if I am thinking correctly. And if they dont pay attention and write down -20/5 in the equation -20 divided by 5 is -4 correct, but the fraction answer would be 1/4th which in turn would be 4 if i am correct, fractions never been my strong suit but i do love your videos and i love math because math is very fun and can do it all day and not get bored

  • @Nemeca99 -20/5 will reduce to -4. That is correct. There is no fraction division here, just integers, so there is not "flipping" to 1/4 here. To divide fractions, you would need two fractions. The first one stays the same, and the other one "flips" (take the reciprocal) and then you multiply. The sign rules (+/-) are the same. Please watch the Lesson 6 videos for more help.

  • @videomathtutor so would you get two different answers if you wrote -20/5 and simplified -20 over 5? I think there was alittle misunderstanding here, you would get the same answer either way, -20 divied by 5 is -4 and -20 over 5 as a fraction is still -4, i just want to know how you made it to be postive, i understand divideing two fractions, its why i dont like useing the fraction sign when divideing, it can confuse, unless that is just me hehe, your an awsome teacher btw!

  • @Nemeca99 I would not make it positive. Not sure how you are making that conclusion. There is only one solution of -4.

  • Who needs teachers when you got YouTube:)

  • @dcdcfc Teachers spend years being trained to be able to teach. ANYONE can post a video on YouTube. You have no guarantee the video is good or not. In fact, most of the math videos I have seen here done by others are not very good.

By the way, from what you wrote, it looks like you are in serious need of ENGLISH teachers! I count 2 grammatical errors in your comment.

  • Thanks for the great tutoring work! You are a great teacher and I really appreciate your help! Thanks!!!!

  • @mathintrepid Glad I could help, but I am not a teacher, just a tutor.

  • Great Video thanks it is helping me understand a lot. Plus you are very good at repeating your self as often as I need you to without getting frustrated...LOL...

  • great

  • Ok I just got confused...Now in your example with 8-(-5)=13, because the signs are both negatives...Ok...now when you just did the problem on the calculator -11-(-6)=-5, now why was that one not added since it has alike signs?

  • @tastemyrainbow26 It was added... to a NEGATIVE number (so it becomes a subtraction): -11 - (-6) = -11 + 6 = -5. Try ti imagine number lines to add and subtract these numbers. I hope this helps!

  • I dont have the dvd

  • @Palomablanca1978 You don't need it, if you just want to watch the video. The notes are available on my website for free download. If you want to purchase the DVD, you can do that at my website too.

  • thanx, your vid is great. Keep up the good work.

  • r u really broke dude?

  • @mike1111131 Not quite broke, but low in funds. This will change once I can make more DVDs (I hope!).

  • equals negative five my teacher said if theres a negative and a minus sign you should just add..???

  • @trustinChrist08 Subtracting is the same as "adding the opposite" so yes, you would add a positive number. You can also think if it as "a negative times a negative is a positive."

  • @mcguire162 I do not know. You may need to use a 12 digit calculator. Look online for virtual calculators that can do this.

  • oh hey do u do word problems? cuz i suck at those too

  • @8cookies2 Yep. Look for my algebra video "Solving Linear Equations, Part 2 - Applications." You may want to watch the other algebra videos before this (like the "Intro to Algebra" and "Part 1" of the LInear Equations lesson).

  • @8cookies2 Yep. Look for the "Algebra - Solving Linear Equations, Part 2: Applications" for detailed help on many different types of Word Problems.

  • soooooo i was wondering if u do science too...??

  • @8cookies2 Nope. Just math. Sorry.

  • i have my algebra subject next semester and this video is a great way to prepare for a battle :P

  • awesome!!!

  • is there a difference between summands and addends?

  • @dafervent1 No. They are the same thing.

  • hello Ast, first of all I want to thanks you for these videos, I had being bad in math in the whole period of my education, now I wish to study information system technology and I got to know that maths is a vital subject in the tuition, your videos encouraged me to face maths, your a very good teacher. I'd like to know whether I can learn math completely with your videos and what should I study more in order to study computers. regards from Brazil.

  • @denernova I do not know. You would need to talk to someone in Information System Technology for your answer. My videos will teach you algebra.

  • @denernova

u can be computer professional with only basic knowledge maths... math awareness is enough.... but depends on ur woking banking softwares need more math knowledge that simple web designing.... all d best...

  • @yourpalcliffy I am not sure what you mean by "computer professional," but computer programmers need a VERY good working knowledge of mathematics. If you just use computers for word processing or making pretty PowerPoint /Keynote presentations, then no, you don't need much math.

  • what can i do with this type of algebra?

  • @dontdodrugs666 This is not algebra. This is a basic math lesson to help you prepare for algebra.

  • nice

  • Your lessons have helped me so much! Im getting my ged and its been like 6 years since school. This helped me remember math in an easy clear way.

  • thanks my math teacher is mean evil and anything els evil u can tinik of

  • I find your videos really useful! Thanx! I am only in Primary 5, so, the videos taught me many things which my school did not teach. I printed out some of your notes and their sooo informative!

  • Great job to you for having the initiative to learn math on your own outside of school! I'm really impressed.

These videos cover the basics, but they are REALLY IMPORTANT. If you don't understand the basics, you'll struggle more later on.

A lot of what he teaches though, you may not even hear about until late high school, sadly. You can get by without knowing it, but it sure makes it easier if you do know it.

  • you made me feel like a retard....

  • I like the videos very helpful

  • wats the absolute value of i?

  • I cover that in another lesson.

  • all these years i thought the opposite of pi was cake. i was sooo ignorant

  • LMFAO NICE JOKE ¬_¬

  • nice ponytial...

  • Nice grammar.

  • nice comeback

  • I was going to be snotty and point out something , but you've probably received enough e-mails on your reply, plus being the helpful numbers wizard that you are , you deserve a pass!

  • at 0:03:35 the +3 shouldnt go there

  • Why not?

  • @videomathtutor because you placed your 3 FOUR spaces away from zero.

  • @diehard951 You are correct. Minor mistake on my part. I am sorry.

  • @videomathtutor

    Nice grammer. :P

  • @dontdodrugs666 Nice spelling.

  • ☺

  • THIS IS AMAZING SIR, THANK YOU ALOT

  • omfg an hour long really

  • Thanks man,your the best

  • thank u

  • Very well explained, thank you very much!
