  • chris rock threw black women under the bus. He did not try to show black women who are natural and love their hair that would have defeated the purpose of the movie, which was to clown the deep seated nerosis of blk women who perm and or hide their hair under weaves. Im not surprised at cris he made fun of some bro. who wore locs in one of hs shows. His comment that his ring didn't get stuck in the woman hair AFTER she permed it is a diss at our natural texture. A disgrace.

  • Actually, before seeing this movie, I thought it would be bad because I was thinking, "What would a guy know about hair?" and since Chris Rock produced the documentary, I thought it would be mostly making fun of the women with natural hair and weave and stuff, but I heard great reviews, so I decided to go see it and I unexpectedly learned a lot, I liked it.

  • Actually, they didn't put relaxers on the aluminum can. They put lye on the can in its original state, First, most relaxers don't use lye anymore. Secondly, lye is not the same in its original state as it is when it's watered down in relaxers. You know this because relaxers come in plastic containers. If lye can burn through a metal can, it damn sure would be able to burn through plastic. That part of the documentary was an exaggeration for dramatic effect.

  • @josbo51715 this may be true but this exaggeration helped me make my final decision in going natural. never will I go back to perms

  • @NaturallySweetTea Congrats! Natural looks better.

  • The main thing that is missing from this movie is that he should have explored the history of good hair/bad hair. He should have explored why many black women are overly concerned with their hair. He said nothing about how black women have been called pickaninnies and nappy headed hoes. He never said anything about how the forces the white standard of beauty on us and makes people believe that kinky hair is unattractive. Chris Rock is a complete sell-out. I will not support his movies.

  • werd.

  • I give it a 2 only for the comedic aspects and the hair show. Everything else was a failure because the only thing he explored was the Indian hair.

  • You should read "Hair Story: Untangling the Roots to Black Hair in America" by Ayana Byrd and Lori Tharps. I felt the same way you did after seeing the movie. I believed that the movie could have explained a little more of the history of the good hair vs bad hair ideology. The book does a really great job in discussing the history of black hair from to pre-slavery and pre-colonial times in Africa to the present. You should definently pick it up.

  • The movie should be called "Relaxers, Weaves, and things" and not Good Hair. I agree 100% with BlackOnyx because if I can rate the movie on a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 2. That's how disappointed I was with the film. And right where explained about the panel of women with relaxers and the 1 woman with natural hair, it pissed me off of why she didn't her chance to state her case of the matter. Honestly, I don't know why Chris Rock made dis movie if he wasn't gonna go in dept with this issue.

  • I thought it was a bit cheesy but did touch on some good points. I didn't see any people w/ natural hair and aside from Lauren London and Meagan Good, I saw the worst weaves in my life. The movie wasn't deep at all.

  • finally just saw the movie because its on cable & i really enjoyed it.... i would have given it a 6 (on a scale of 1 to 5). it was very informal and well put..... how would you feel about this movie if you were still getting relaxers?!?! hummmm

  • I totally agree with u about the movie being ok but not deep on natural hair. I expected more.

The high school girls part was kinda akward.

When the black lady rejected the "nappy hair" chris was offering she said we don't want that hair because people don't wear their hair like that no more kinda shocked me.

  • I feel exactly how you feel about this movie. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, it just wasn't as informative as I thought it would've/should've been. It relied to heavily on the stereotypes of hair in our community, and I find nothing wrong with that, but the problem was it didn't explain where those stereotypes came from. The film also leaned to much on weaves and relaxers instead of also, like you said, delving into the subject of natural hair (which I have lol).

    Free of creamy crack!

  • OMg I one hundre percent agree with you. I thought there was going to be some sort of discussion on the social aspect of this movie. The fact that African American women are told that natural hair is ugly and straight hair is beautiful has a lot to do with this. I think that people forget the social aspect and kind of thing that these people are wasteful and just want to spend money on their hair because it's the thing to do. It really isn't that simple once you really disect the situation.

  • This review was right on point..I just saw it for the first time like a week ago and it was not what I expected it to be. I expected more natural people and some history...and with that girl pretty much sitting there listening to not constructive criticism, but straight up criticism? I was upset...and kind of angry that she never even got the chance to speak for herself...funny and informative but needed some natural spice ;]

  • Hi BlackOnyx77, you have a captive audience, as the number of your viewers are in excess of 5,500. As an avid Youtube viewer, we the viewers have the ability to create Youtube videos that can address the some of the issues that were not discussed in the Good Hair movie. We do not have to rely on celebrities to tell our stories in the day and age of the internet. We can create a topic on the history of the term "good hair" and viewers can post their video responses or written responses.

  • I agree with everything that you said. I live in the UK (and I'm natural =]), and I watched it, and was quite disappointed with it. I didn't learn that much. I give Chris full marks for effort though, get the impression that he did put a lot of it into the movie.

  • I haven't seen it yet...but another thought in reference to the H.S. girl panel....I wonder what the take home message will be for the majority of women of color (relaxed) who saw the movie (and teenagers). I wonder if this movie justifies the belief in their minds that the negative connotation associated with natural hair is "okay". Tyra Banks attempted to have that serious conversation about natural hair and at least she called on 2 naturalistas :-).

  • I haven't seen the movie yet, n=but from what I've heard it DIDN'T pertain to the usual good hair/bad hair issue and what I think others can learn...I am a natural also/almost 4 years loc'ed, not anti-perm ( I luv feathered bobs!). Just started watching ur channel-LUV IT!

  • I like your review. I just wanted to remind you that this movie was done by a man and all he really knows about good hair is what he sees in his life and the media around...and that is what he talked about in the movie...perm and fake hair. I don't believe that Chris could have gone any deeper than what he did. I feel that if a woman had done this movie you would have got all of what you wanted.

  • like this... very true

  • Excellent review. If it was this biased against natural hair and styling, I'll wait for the DVD. But remember CR's wife is probably weaved or relaxed - so he can't upset wifey.

  • Thanks for the review... that is what I thought it would be like based on the previews. Good thing I didnt waste my $10. I'll wait for it to come on tv.

  • great review. From the jump, I knew chris rock didn't know anything worth listening to... He first disappointed me when he was surprised that a bw could have long hair and questioned oprah- big red flag moment. The previews would have tipped me off to the idea that he had educated himself- and, they didn't. I'm kind disturbed that he's been allowed to spread stereotypes. His responsibility was to explain why it is the way it is and do a good job of showing the alternatives

  • I was disappointed in the movie as well, the segment with the high school girls brought tears to my eyes because like you said..they took away some of her light and did not give her a chance to speak her views. Everyone on that panel was weaved out except one beautiful sista and that really set me off. I really wish someone would do an entire movie about being natural..all natural men and women. That would be empowering, keep doing what you do..I love it!!

  • Thanks for the review. I'll wait for DVD!

  • i'm guessing a lot of us share the same sentiment. i was disappointed in the exclusion of the fun, beauty & versatility of natural hair. 1 natural person (and 1 who has alopecia) didn't cut it. it did show the BSS ppl pretty much dogging the afro/natural hair wigs though. wtf?! i was enlightened by the indian hair "process" but i've never worn weave so it didn't impact me in a major way. it's like the film was 88% weave, 11% perm, 1% natural hair. i'll be writing hbo to express my thoughts.

  • if anyone wishes to write hbo about the film, their address is:

    HBO

    1100 Avenue of the Americas

    New York, NY 10036-6712

    Phone 212.512.1000

  • the movie mame me think....but i the part where the little baby had its had shaved and it was screaming....that touched me ...

  • THANKS. I wish you didn't give away so many things in the movie since I hven't seen it yet.. but thanks.

  • Hmmmmm

Chris Rock should hear your review.

I also thought they were going to go a lot deeper into the "GOOD HAIR - BAD HAIR" topic.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm supposed to be going to see it this weekend, but if I don't, no biggie. Like you said, I can check it out on DVD.

  • They were blown away. I see it like this, the movie was target audience was mainstream. Chris Rock used the term "good hair" because the stereotype to the majority is if you have loose curls or , just recently, weave, expensive wigs, etc. Yea, he could of gone into showing that good hair is healthy hair but his focus was more on how much women, especailly black women spend on hair, whether natural or not. I just didn't expect too much a all. Just some good laughs.

  • lol..ur right :)

  • Unfortunatly I have to wait till it comes out on DVD since I'm overseas but by watching the previews I didn't expect to learn much from it..but to get alot of laughs. I notice alot of naturals was looking for that but women who relax their hair and really not into hair communities like us did learn a lot.

  • I like this hairstyle on you...

  • OMG, that part with the highschool girls talking about how they wouldn't hire someone who came in with a suit and a fro made me cry! It was so sad that we are raising our daughters to hate themselves like that. When I first went natural one of my daughters said "eww, I can't live without my relaxer cause my hair has to flow." as she flipped it like a white girl. I felt bad then and I felt bad all over again when I watched the movie.

  • You took the words right out of my mouth!!!

  • If you look on youtube for the preview scenes of the movie you really have seen the whole movie. As a former relaxed chick I did not relate to the movie because I did not weave when I was relaxed. It was all about weave and a tiny bit about relaxers. I gave the movie about a 2. It is not worth the money.

  • I totally agree with everything you are saying. I left the movies disappointed and wanting more dialogue about why the daughters felt that they didn;t have good hair and why people shun naturals etc. Some interesting stuff but overall I gave it a 3 out of 5, simply because I learn more about the three things you spoke about at the beginning of the video.

  • yea i felt like there wasnt enough about natural hair

  • I didnt care for it.. Couldn't understand Ice T role in the Documentary.. Isnt he with Coco. Didn't see what his role was in the Movie ( a waist)

  • I agree with you.. I didn't go see the movie. I did think the movie would put the good hair theory under the table. People forget that white women and men been wearing wigs for years. I love my natural hair and I wish one natural would make a movie.

  • I expected more from this movie but taking into account that he covered a lot of topics in a short time, I was quite satisfied with the result. Using humor, he questioned why black women do some of the things they do regarding hair in a way that makes you think without offending anyone. Filmmaking is still a business. I did think there was too much of a focus on the hair show but for entertainment purposes it worked. I also wish he had more women (or men) discussing natural hair.

  • great review!! ill wait until it comes out on dvd

  • I actually saw the movie with a natural hair group I am apart of and we all felt that there should have been more discussion on natural hair...the one girl as you mentioned with natural hair was sort of denounced for having non-relaxed hair..the religious sacrifices in India really opened my eyes...there are women in the industry with natural hair i.e. Yaya. I left the theatre wanting more myself...oh and just to mention $1000 for a weave that looked like a wig??? layaway weaves? wth?!

  • Exactly. I felt the same way. The movie was basically about hair weaves and the hair show. He got the idea from his daughter asking why she doesn't have good hair. So I was excited to see what he had to say. When I got there I was disappointed because there was so much information that was not told about the history of the good hair theory. I got mad how they did the young lady in high school. I guess they just wanted to show how ignorant people are.

  • .. my momma told me many years ago, that good hair was hair that was easliy manageable, it behaves well, bad hair is hair that is hard to manage, easliy broken and least desired.. i never thought of it as a degrading thing, UNTILL i reached high school and say way over enough movies and videos... i know no its WAY DEEPER than that.. true story.

  • I agree with you in that I was looking for more from the film and on the fact that there was not enough natural representative. I think for the most part it was more a comedy than an actual documentary.

  • I was expecting more from the movie as well. I did find it quite shocking that the women from India are shaving their heads for religious purposes and don't know that the temple is making money off of them. However I did find the whole sodium hydroxide experiment eye opening, and the hair show interesting. I was really hoping to learn more of the history of the whole "good hair" terminology. It was a good, honest movie but a lot more about our hair history could have been covered.

  • yeah also, I agree with you on the only teen in the room that was being blasted by her collegues. also it seems now the world just thinks we as black women hate ourselves. And youre right he didnt go into detail WHY we are doing this.

  • natural hair had no real representation! and he didn't research enough about the revolution that is going on with Black Women going natural, that was completely negated. it just seemed that most black women were just frying themselves.

The Indian hair sacrifice was very sad however, and eye opening.

  • you are so right i have natural hair as well. and the reviews was nothing like the movie. girl i feel just like you. stay blessed.

  • Someone with natural hair should have at least discussed how great they feel with natural hair...and show different ways to wear. He could have spent a couple of minutes on that and it would have ade a big difference.

  • i think it was really a movie to show the rest of the world how self-centered black women are when it comes to hair. i think by calling it "good hair" he is showing that the hair in question really isn't good after all! he didn't really show natural hair because there is nothing wrong with natural hair. relaxed hair is the problem. his two daughters have natural beautiful long hair for a reason.

  • I think your sentiments are the same ones expressed by people who have seen this movie. Thanks for the review, I will be waiting for it to come out on DVD at the RedBox.

  • your hair style is really cute...

  • Wow Im so disappointed!

I also saw Chris Rock on Oprah talking about where the weave comes from, etc. In a way, Im not suprised though because I would've expected somebody more.."serious" to have a movie like this, instead of Chris Rock..who does comedy.

Well idk, I guess I'll be going to see "Precious" this weekend instead! lol

  • thanks for this review! Now i will wait till its on DVD!

  • i am in love with this hairstyle. go girl!

  • I think the best review on the is at Youtube video

    "v=IEtAKcANh3E"

  • Thanks for this review. Your hair is fierce.

  • Thank you I will wait until DVD.

  • you know I have not seen the movie but everyone whoo is natural seems to be disappointed..i think a natural needs to make a movie because from what i have heard it missed the mark !

  • I was ecstatic to see the movie and thought finally. I took my white friend to see it. And basically everyone in the theatre was white and let me tell you they didn't learn anything. What most of them got was Black people wear fake hair and are dumb enough to put chemicals. Infact my friend then thought my hair was a wig!!! And I am natural. I really wish he would have discussed how slave masters would put chemicals on slaves. This movie could have went there. Chris Rock just wont understand.

  • your review was dead on but all in all i loved the movie!! i recommed women that get relaxers and weaves (i still wear them) to go because al shapton and alot of those men sopke the truth.

  • the movie wasnt about natural hair is was about hair period. no offense to you BO

  • but the point he was trying to make to his daughter was that her hair is fine the way it is. she don't have to have hair like her white friends. he really didn't touch on that enough is the point. this movie isn't going to help blacks realize that their hair is great the way it is.

  • I agree with you..Instead, he kept telling women with relaxed hair like Oprah and another lady that there hair was perfect.

  • I see. He didnt give much info or elaborate on of the history behind our hair.

  • It was definitely weak for me. I also didnt like the part when they were talking about how unprofessional natural hair is since it was clearly evident that the only natural girl there felt out of place. That would have been a good lead into interviews with natural professional women to discuss their experiences because alot of times the perception of natural hair is based on ignorance. So it almost made it seem like that kind of thinking was ok by not showing the other side.

  • Lesson when ever you go to see a movie in the U.S. about our race. Do not expect it to make you feel pride about your African heritage. Market researchers know who will spend at the movie theater. Everything from the very news you watch play this game. The consumers who buy products from their advertisers that is the group they cater to.

  • I think you are a great example of what it is all about as far as being natural and you also know what it's like being on the other side of having relaxed hair. I also think you are very knowledgeable and you can educate people worldwide about this subject and maybe you can do a documentary and have it produced.

  • I heard straight hair has a higher ph level compared to tight curly hair. I would think that would strip our hair.

  • I think the movie was being honest because that is the fact. Black women spend tons on weaves. I do not wear weaves never did. When I go to the beauty supply store everyone is in the back buying their weaves.

  • u amazingly hit on a whole lot of points that i saw wrong with the movie. i hated the fact that the movie was about weaves and such. i have never worn a weave so i felt like i wasted my time for the most part. i wanted to learn about my hair in its natural state and not about hair shows and weaves and who wears it and the cost of weaves and such...i give the movie a 2.375.

  • I completely agree. It also bothered me when the 3 yr. old little girl told Chris Rock his daughter needed to get her hair relaxed like hers because that is what you are suppose 2 do.. It shows how young things get installed into our head. I DID NOT like how all of these shows and movies addressed that there is a problem.. but NO ONE made any efforts to show different lifestyles..

Its amazing how all of these problems within our community are being aired. But no1 helps to help change it. smh

  • I agree. I expected more of a dialogue and education for the masses. He fell short of what it could be.

  • I totally agree..it should of been more indepth and I felt that there wasn't enough naturals and it's more dealing with people with relaxers and weaves. There needs to a an actual natural hair documentary

  • i give the movie a 2. it meant well but it only had knowledge for someone who knows nothing about hair....it gave bits and pieces but nothing for people who already know bout hair...shame cuz it too wanted to give i a freakin 5. i couldn't wait to see it.

  • I wish they had more naturals on their. One who was permed and went natural and one that was natural all their life. And the naturals should elaborate on the whats and the whys. How certain terms affect us and educate them. I definitely felt hurt when they spoke to the natural high school girl. Society hasn't accepted natural hair, so I believe that is why they think it is unprofessional. Great review, you've pin point everything. Good job to Chris Rock. He should have a pt 2, and go in depth.

  • Thanks Rochelle!!! I haven't seen it so I was wondering what you thought about it. You are right if they did not share more naturals and what we're about. Share all aspects of a bw hair and the issues. hmm maybe somebody else will really step up. Poor baby at that high school...I probably thought that same mess when I was in high school. Our kids need to know that they are NOT their hair.

  • Comment removed

  • It's funny how you started to play with your hair more when you mentioned your ex. Lol

  • thats so sad that they put the high school girl down.

  • i agree with you 1000%. i 2 was crushed when they dogged the one natural high school girl & didn't give her a chance to say anything (or it was cut out). the hair as a religious sacrifice being used for weave blew my mind. he never even answered his daughter's question. he kept saying if/when she gets a relaxer i want to know what's involved or some ish. he didn't even consider her having / wanting natural hair. his wife is weaved up so i knew he wasn't going to go but so far.

  • I was also hurt by the high school conversation. It was almost like Chris let them put her down and let it ride. That could have been a teaching moment and instead it was just insulting. I do not fault the other girls for feeling the way that they did. It is common to think that natural hair is "unacceptable" "unprofessional" "ugly." But why did they do nothing, absolutely nothing, to address it. It was a funny movie and I learned about weave and the business but overall... Dissapointed:-(

  • I was so disappointed. I though it was going to be MORE educational. I felt like the world is watchng black woman be made fun of.

    Thats just me.

  • Thank you for your honest review! I was very disappointed in the movie, and couldn't understand why so many people were giving this movie such great reviews-seemed unfinished. All it did was exposed the black community as shallow wasteful consumers. As far as Chris Rock not wanting to step on anyone toes thats some bs because his comedy steps on a lot of toes. I think he just didn't know what the hell he was talking about and kinda made light of a subject that is very touching to black women.

  • @srichw1980 hi, i haven't watched it as yet don't even know if i would want to watch it after some of the comments i have seen on here. But i agree with your statement, strongly.

  • Bajansuga2, thanks sweetie! The movie isn't that bad, but just not worth the time.. I wish he would have never put it out bcuz I feel like he has set us back far as how black women are preceived in our own community and white society.

  • Chris Rock should have called the movie "Real Hair" or "True Hair," that would have been more accurate fpr the movie

  • Shoot, we just need to come out with our own documentary, because I agree with you, I was not as impressed as I thought I was going to be. I thought the hair show was a filler and didn't need to be in there and I think he could have totally done the psychological history of our hair and how it relates to the people around us.

  • true dat, BlackHairchronicles. We should come out w/ our own move and call it Great Hair: from good to GREAT!

  • @083770 i think blackonyx should be the one and so should some other women i watch here on youtube but by far i find blackonyx is very knowledgeable and to the point. i think they should come together and educate the public in a broader aspect, youtube is nice but a movie or some kind of documentary would be nice. Don't you think share your views please.

  • Emphatically, YES, bajansuga2! BlackOnyx,

RusticBeauty,PrettyDimples01,NappyChronicles,FamilyGoingNatural,richeau,AfroHairSecrets,Sera2544,btrlbttrfly22,ReviveUK,msbrice,LexiWithTheCurls,saxygurl8,SugarFreeTV,Ayamejoy,Glamazini,TheMakeupVirgin,LongHairDontCare2011,BeautifulBrwnBabyDol,ItsMsHeatherNicole,JodietheNutter(she so crazy!), GoinCurly,InspiredCoils,Katelynylyn(she white but she know how to do Black hurr), n many others. Also men like Diepiriye and also those w/ dread/brade/sister locs!

  • I forgot to add CrownOfHisGlory, she's awesome! And I know I didn't put a bunch of others. Help me out, people!

  • I agree completely. This film had potential to teach an captive audience but instead, but instead they failed to acknowledge some of the most important issues.

  • Once again it seems like a black person went on to talk about a very controversial topic and not wanting to step on anyone's toes half stepped. Why even do it if your not gonna give fair representation to ALL black hair.

  • I agree with u sooo much but ur being generous i would give it a 2.5 maybe 3. It didnt go NEARLY as deep as I had hoped. There are soooo many points of view he did NOT cover. The subject of "hair" in the african american community runs so deep and goes back so far and it just wasnt addressed. I was sooo disappointed.

  • I think that he was trying to keep it safe. I think he didn't want to brew up a white vs. black thing. A lot of black ppl carry around animosity really deep within themselves against whites for what happened to our ancestors. For example a lot of the times when we discuss the history of slavery we always say what "we" went through (including ourselves) instead of saying what our ancestors went through. And b/c of that he stayed clear of how blacks inferiority began.

  • From all the reviews....I agree that he did not go deep enough. But at that same...as a black community.....are we ready to face our past? It's still a crime in our community to even talk about having other cultures in our background. If we don't have courage to admit that...how can we sit and have a mature conversation about the inferior seed planted within the spirit of our ppl that has passed through many generations since then. Watch "100 Years Without A Comb"....it's on youtube...

  • I love it. I wanna know why that isn't played during black history month or in our school systems. It speaks truth. Anyways, I love your review and I agree without having to see it...it needed to be deeper. I'm ready to face my history....I've kinda began....How about everyone else??? I hope my comments came off we'll...I'm not the best at explaining sometimes. Good luck in all everyone. =)

  • u look so cute! but i haven't seen the movie yet but the reviews r makin me just wanna wait til it comes out on dvd lol

  • i read that he focused more on relaxed hair so i was like fuck his movie. i will watch it bootleg.

  • i felt the same way about the movie, i expected more.

  • I think he was just trying to be too careful not to step on anyones feelings or toes and that's why he could not put a debate on full blown blast, just me thoughts.

  • The girl in high school with the natural hair was the most put together out of the group, her outfit was nice her posture was nice and I felt really bad for her!

  • I seen it and Chris' movie did not answer his daughter's question...

  • On a scale of 1 to 5, I would give it a 2....and that's only because I liked the hair show battle at the end. I think that it was really an attempt to ridicule black women who wear weaves. Why so much weave coverage without offering any alternatives? I would have LOVED to see more Black women rocking their natural hair. In an interview, he actually said that he did cover the natural side, but it wasn't ''entertaining", so he cut it out. I think that he should have stayed away from the topic.

  • There should be a PART 2, focusing on the positives of having natural hair, educating young black gals and showing them that they don't have too relax their hair coz natural hair is BEAUTIFUL!

  • Thanks for this! I wanted to see the movie, but I'm already disappointed that they didn't really focus on having and sporting your natural hair (with minimal representation of other Naturals). So I guess I'll wait and rent it.

  • honestly 2 me they didnt talk about nothing i didnt know about hair

  • You are so funny. If you would have continued to talk, I believe you would have given it a 2.

  • lol yeah i agree! i haven't seen the movie yet but i'm hearing that he didn't even answer his daughter's question...i will probably see it when it comes out on dvd.

  • did anyone see the "Nappy Roots " Documentry?

  • Im just suprised chris made a movie like this. I can not take him seriously.

  • I agree that folks should wait to see the movie. Actually there were two naturals but there definitely wasn't enough natural representation. The movie was definitely focused more on aspects of relaxed hair and weaves and didn't delve into the all around educational side of black hair. The movie was a fail.

  • Very nice, honest review. I have not seen the movie, however, I have read and heard many reviews of the movie. And from that I got the feeling that "Good Hair" didn't delve deep enough into the topic; that the surface had barely been scratched. Thanks again for the review and for sharing your thoughts from a natural perspective.

  • Comment removed

  • i gave it a 3/5. it could have been better. he should have focused more about WHERE the good hair/bad hair stigma came from. that would have been much better!

  • To get the gist of what I'm speaking of watch the video triology on the Youtube channel redmoonrabbit98. You'll see young people of color making statements like "Natural hair looks dirty." Self hatred is a terrible thing. Also, not all "African" hair is nappy. I have type 4b/c natural hair and when someone approaches me with ignorance, I tell them the facts! peace

  • tyra did an episode on good hair bad hair......its really good you should look it up and watch it it has it from various points of view

  • The movie was a documentary about people of colors goal to achieve the brainwashed form of "good hair"--straight, anything not nappy. People in our community have let society tell us what determines "good hair." SAD!

  • also one thing that i would have wanted him to do is to actually go to africa and see how the women there wear there hair and interview them, and see if their opinions on weaves and stuff, that would have made it interestin....goin back to our roots :)

  • Yep another great oppurtunity missed.

  • The women on Youtube is going to make the real movie. Good Hair Movie. God bless!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ha ha lol you must have screamed inside when you saw your ex bf modeling the hair show. congrats to him.

  • Maybe we should submit comments to the Good Hair Facebook page to encourage him to do a part 2 of the movie, but have an all natural panel this time.

  • i have not seen the movie but from watching Chris on Orpah he seemed more concerned with explaining where black women get their hair from, what a relaxer is.etc it still be cause some confusion. some may think all black women have fake hair.

  • @acestarone Yea, I saw the movie and thats the way they made it seem. :/ It made me mad that they didn't say that some black women do wear their natural hair.

  • i guess it takes an indie film maker to do it better. i have a friend that did a paper during college explaining what the long term use of a relaxer does to ones hair. there is so much to do. there are also a lot of relaxer nightmare stories out there

  • please add me as friend.. cause i have to tell you something girl and I prefer to be private message to you.. please.. its important.. lol..

  • I don't think your rating should change because the movie was made by an African American. I think that is a biased review when you base it on the ethnicity of a person. As an African American I have learned over the years that not every African American will be in your favor simply because you share the same color or ethnicity. In most cases, money trumps ethnicity.

Chris Rock's goal was to make money and for those that paid to see his film... his goal was accomplished.

  • i agree. its a delicate line to toe@cunningprose

  • i totally agree they really didnt show da beauty of having natural hair... their is more 2 us than weave and relaxers...

  • Oh yea I was going to say Iove that shirt, the earrings, and your makeup. Girl your style is always on point. I'm tryna get like you when I get my money right.

  • she explained how she did the genie locs. I like blackonyx because she finds very inexpensive creative ways of doing ones hair.

  • @Myimani me too,wow i was thinking the same thing from the time i started watching her on youtube. She's a very inspirational sister. I hope for your sake that happens for you soon because i know how it is, god bless you and good luck.

  • Oh yea I agree they needed some naturals on the panel. All them weaved up celebs. We have hair. We don't all have weaves. Nothing wrong with them but gosh can we let people know we can grow some hair. I'd give it a low rating as well. But good try. Someone else should do it better though. I wanted to say something else but I forgot. Dang it.

  • i wasn't blown away either. i would give it a 3 out of 5. I was actually disappointed because it was one-sided. There is no way that movie displays a majority of black women's opinion

  • yeah i guess Chris got lazy as a filmmaker. I guess have the celebs in the movie was a huge draw. He should have mixed the hair testimonials with everyday people.

  • shooot I watched it online. I do want to see it on dvd that someone else buys. Or I want to catch an early show. I want to see it only so I can see it clearer without the poor video quality. I was not too impressed with the movie and at times made it seem like our hair doesn't grow or you can't touch our hair. Shoot I welcome my man to touch my natural type 4 hair. Men like to play in our hair too.Shoot. End rant..

  • That 5 minute??? Didnt miss anything dont worry.

  • lmbo thanks lol

  • I completely agree in regards to the movie providing a point of view from the natural perspective. The part that you mentioned about the young ladies basically insulting the one natural young lady saying it was unprofessional and she wouldn't be taken seriously in a corporate setting ... you could see her falling apart after each comment. I wished she would have had a chance to speak or at least someone who was natural provided some input as opposed to only those who wore relaxers or weaves.

  • i soo agree...n it was sad to see her go through that , felt like bias scene in movie

  • Thanks for the review!

  • i thought it was decent however i didn't feel that it lived up to the hype people were giving it. i did learn a few new things but i'm in the same boat as you (wasn't blown away) and i'm glad i caught the ealry show for only $6 lol.

  • Chris Rock is not a normally a serious documentary director so i think it was meant more for entertaining than a learning film. But if you can take something away from something funny thats cool too. I don't know what people expected from Chris Rock aka CB4 actor remember that movie lol.

  • I already made up in my mind that I will wait until it's on dvd.
