Actually Monday, Dec. 25, 1995 Christmas Day. Looks like the late Pope John Paul II wasn't feeling well in his Christmas Message, wasn't he? Diana M. May 3, 2009
Yep! This was used for every early evening weekend news bulletin during this era. The late weekend news, however, used the Nine look and theme. Strangely, on bank holidays all bulletins used this look - even the late ones! I could never work out why they did that.
Funny that on this day the worst blizzards in 4 decades hit northern Britain, because 1995 was the last time I have seen a White Christmas, and even then it hardly snowed that much.
Incidently, why was the daytime set used for the late bulletins on Bank Holidays. The late bulletins at weekends used the dark set. Strange, because this is at just after 10pm, the Nine O'clock news always used the dark set.
And in reply to that, by 'main' news it means the main news stories (not the main broadcast.) After the main news stories have been given, he or she will say good evening and it will switch to the 'local' news, which depends on where you live. In my area it would be East Midlands Today.
Actually, the late evening bulletins on both the BBC and ITV are considered to be the flagship bulletins. For the BBC, that's the Ten O'Clock News, and for ITV, it is currently the News at 10.30; soon to be News at Ten. In this instance, it was from Christmas Day 1995. Usually, on Christmas Day the BBC only show a summary around 6pm and the longer programme is left until late evening. There was no regional bulletin following that broadcast on 25/12/1995.
The news on BBC at 10 is the same length as the news at 6 I thought. I mean you know your stuff, but I've watched both are they're the same length - half an hour.
Yes, the 6pm and 10pm bulletins are roughly the same length (as is, in fact, the 1pm news) but the BBC considers the 10pm bulletin as its flagship/main bulletin. That's why Huw Edwards presents it. ITV's 10.30pm bulletin is presented by Mark Austin (main presenter), soon to be Trevor McDonald again when News at Ten returns.
it's funny how in the Uk th 'main' eveing news is at 10! In Australia and NZ it is at 6, and in Canada it is at 11. In Aust after 10 the news becaomes 'late news'
I remember that Christmas well living in Aberdeen. I was 16 had never seen blizzards like it, which is saying something in NE Scotland. Being in the city we were lucky as the power stayed on though the TV was off air until mid afternoon. Then followed the big freeze -20C for about a week.
Its so impressive and ahead of its time that when i found an old BBC 9:00 news broadcast from 1993 (one of the first to use this look) I actually thought it was an actual set, with the glass things with the eagles on it hung from the studio lighting rig!!!

As far as I'm concerned Britain's 'main' news is at 6. It's called the six o'clock news. Most people watch it then (I do at tea time anyway.)
Don't forget this is also 12 years ago.

Most of the 'set' is CGI, the only actual section that exists was the bit of desk for the presenter. Pretty advanced stuff when it debuted

Its still looks excellent even now.
