  • How come each time I view a Sleepytime Gorilla Museum clip on YouTube and I read the comments, nearly all the fans seem to be morbid geniuses. I’m glad to see a general intelligence amongst you people but I loath you all for being human, but you or I can’t change that.

  • ...man this guys know his shit.

  • I think some people get easily distracted by a person's unusual appearance or mannerisms. Those people can miss how incredibly insightful such people can be.

  • I laughed at about 8:15 in because I can totally relate to the "long awkward name" thing. My band had a shorter name until we discovered that several other bands already were using it, so we added on some extra words and now its like 11 syllables long :P.

  • Inspiring.

  • how does he keep his head that shiny with that much makeup on?

  • So saddened that one of the most talented and entertaining bands has called it quits. Thanks for everything going back to 2000!!!

... Glad I had a chance to see them about 6 times.

  • RIP Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. :(

  • nothing was more acidy than the intro to the vid

  • charming hostess is fukin sweet

  • the monster goatee did not die with layne. and the dream of the 90's is alive in OAKLAND, in fact.

  • At a minute in it looks as if he controls the background sounds with his hands like a wizard haha

  • @TheHorrorAnthem lol The tea lady was coming in with crumpets but he used telekenisis to push her over ;)

  • do not insult the fans is what I meant to say, hopefully that is easily deciphered due to the rest of my message.

  • this is the most retarded band, and no ones ever heard of them and never will even in the future, I bet if i ask any of my friends if they've heard of this band theyd say hell no wtf and if i show them they'll just punch my computer screen, so for the sake of normal peoples computers, dont show any normal people, #9 rule of thumb, always keep secrets to yourself

  • @Jimborocknroll90 Haha why do so many people like you on the internet just bash things you have never heard, by the way in a sense you're preaching to the choir. See "normal" people will not like this and that is one of the great things about it, and by unnormal I do insult the fans because I am a huge fan, but compared to what a normal person calls normal nickleback, or maybe something vintage like the beatles, this will seem very odd. In fact though, this band is very talented and worthwhile.

  • @TheHorrorAnthem i "bash" it because this is not music its just some weird ass shit that a drug addict thought up in his head and decided to make a video, while wearing some make up and tryin to look "different" when in reality hes prolly homeless and has no chance for love, im sorry, yes he can do as he pleases, but why should he take up video space on youtube with this? waste of time and may God have mercy on anyones soul who accidentally clicked this video link

  • @Jimborocknroll90 You do realize this is an interview right? Not a song by them. And Sleepytime did not post the video or conduct an interview of themselves, this was done and posted by popuptv. To say this music is ravings of a drug addict is like saying Mozart was no more than a drug addict, because all Sleepytime is, is composition in ways that are beyond a 4/4 time measure. But from the way you bash on them you would probably say the same thing about Meshuggah, Tom Waits, or maybe even Opeth

  • @TheHorrorAnthem Well all I got to say is people have different taste of music apparently and yeah i thought i was commenting on the song about the morning star or whatever, i was arguing with someone else on that vid too

  • @Jimborocknroll90 All in all ya, it all comes down to taste. I myself have never done a drug in my life but love trippy offbeat stuff. I can see how this band would come off odd, scary, noisy, and unpleasant, but those are things that draw me to it. But heck, I also listen to Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash haha. So ya, taste is the key word.

  • @TheHorrorAnthem couldnt have said it better myself, i mean i listen to stuff from johnny cash to slipknot, i mean any band could have one good song that everyone loves, or it could be that it hasnt been heard yet. Good talkin to ya lol

  • good band , good style and i like the singer he knows his stuff , but english band cardiacs are much better.

  • if Sleepytime Gorilla Musem, Ween, Primus, and TISM all worked together on a song...oh god...

  • Are those teeth caps real? I thought they were just for the videos etc.

No wonder he speaks a bit funny XD

  • 2:51--2:57 LMAO

  • i thought this guy would be way weirder but he actually seems pretty chill haha

  • @AntonSiekmann i thought the same

  • congrats he speaks in such a clear way

  • Okay, so...whats wrong with his teeth?

  • Trolls can stfu, Nils turns me on.

  • Completely whacked out of his mind, yet brilliant!...

  • this guy amazes me!!! great!

  • Ah, charming hostess. Good stuff.

  • I know certain ignorant comments have already been discussed here, but I noticed one that suggested we listen to "actual music that relaxes and calms and heals". Personally, the kind of "music" that Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and the like come up with is exactly the kind that "relaxes and calms and heals" me. For example, after a long shitty day of being stepped on, "Powerless" is a welcome release. "Music" is about much more than "pretty" melodies. It's a release.

  • @moosikerin Fucking right, nobody can tell YOU what "relaxes and calms" you.

  • This guy is actually how I imagined the joker should have been done in the dark night. The way he talks... moves... a bit creepy. And he makes that lips parting noise.

  • @whatthemeh I've chatted with him after som shows--he's eating something, doesn't normally smack all the time. Always seems sober and humble too, real gentleman.

  • @duur8 i've been left with the same opinion after chatting with him too.

  • great comments everyone! super intelligent and beating down ignorance. love it.

    long live sleepytime!

  • Is rational thought really this dead?

It's not as if he's going out and murdering puppies or pouring sugar in your gas tank. Even if this guy were trippin' balls the entire time he's certainly not hurting me.

Anyways, I find it most effective when dealing with the religious, to quote their own scripture against them.

"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"

    Matthew 7:3, KJV.

  • You know, even if Nils is way off his rocker, he's probably still a helluva lot happier than any of us here, and that says more than I could ever hope to.

  • Trippin? Seriously?

This guy is more sober than George Will, FCOL!

  • God forbid you attempt to articulate a concept beyond the vapid platitudes of small talk. Nobody listens to you unbless you've tucked your shirt into your tan colored slacks, wrapped a tie around your neck like a noose and leave your individuality (and I would dare say, DIGNITY) at the door. It's a sick situation when somebody looks or acts a little bit outside your petty and small minded social expectations, and you brand them a leper.

I guess it's easier than thinking.

  • Everybody keeps commenting on how he's not acting right. close your eyes and listen, he's taking a very informal, conversational approach. It sounds no different than anybody else having a candid moment. His body language a lot more expressive than what we're probably used to seeing - and that's why he probably seems intoxicated. At least in the US people respond very badly to high levels of expression of any kind. We're expected to be subdued and stiff, and god forbid...

  • I love you for saying what's on my mind.

  • Augbo, I noticed in your recent activity, you marked a Willie Nelson vid as a favorite. Willie is an admitted pot head, so if you're judging people based on thier consumption of intoxicants, you're being quite hypocritical.

You discluded yourself from intellectual discourse the moment you mentioned DOG. Trash TV at best. The fact that it's on A&E speaks to the true degredation of society.

If you spent as much time helping your neighbors as you do judging them the world would be a better place.

  • @Solidlojik

    >discluded

    >intellectual discourse

    pick one.

  • Brilliant musicians... shitty philosophers...

  • just because someone is unique and there body language is different, doesn't mean they are on drugs. That is a pretty dumb assumption. Common and dumb. Have you listened to the music he creates? How could he be "normal"? He clearly thinks outside the box and lives outside the box. When you are stretching your creative limits, it will naturally wear on your entire life. I think this is a great thing. He is a character!

  • Heh, it's probably a combination of touring-induced exhaustion and performance-induced endorphins.

It's stupid and dangerous to make such slanderous remarks toward a person you clearly know nothing about.

Thank goodness Carla isn't playing Beethoven symphonies in some municipal orchestra ... what a terrible place for such a creative soul.

  • One would only hope no one takes your comment seriously. And if you call Carla's solo albums classical, you might need your ears checked.

  • He's got make up on asshole.

He's completely articulate and aware and clearly NOT on drugs.

    Go fuck yourself.

  • This is so not worth my time.

I know watching A&E makes you professional enough to suspend any benefit of the doubt - hilarious grounds for expertise.

It's not about what his eyes look like, is it?

You wouldn't like Nils Frykdahl if he was in a suit with short hair and blue eyes.

You're one of those self-righteous types who has put on the mantel of piousness - "they're freaks"

Yeah, I know pluralism is a threat to you, but you look pretty old there "boomer", so it makes sense.

  • His eyes are red and his skin is white because he's wearing STAGE MAKEUP. I suppose you also think Manson's eyes are actually white and the guys from Kiss have stripes.

  • What about those guys from GWAR?

  • you better be trolling

  • @Augbo Calmer than you, Dude.

  • @Augbo I thought DOG was a crackhead,not a tweakazoid.

  • one would only hope that you stop to exist. GO SLEEPYTIME!!

  • Let's say, for the sake of argument, that he is completely out of his mind on acid or peyote or whatever. Even if that were true, what difference does it make? His discussion is articulate and informing. The music made by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is interesting and enjoyable. What is going on inside his head, a place that you or I can never inhabit, is meaningless to us. Only the artifacts of those processes have meaning to those of us who are not him.

  • As I said, there's no point discussing this with you. You've made your decision based on your book, and not on reality. More obviously so since you think that dc Talk or Casting Crowns are anything like good music.

You go live in your book-based world. I'll live here in the reality-based one.

  • Incidentally, I have listened to Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Schumann, Philip Glass, and even Twila Paris and DC Talk. Beyond that I can actually play piano - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Minor, etc.

The main difference, Augbo, is I'm not a retardoxian promoting my religious beliefs on Youtube comments by bashing fucking incredible music. SGM definitely has too much dB and IQ behind it for you. dc talk are you fucking serious? LOL

  • Every one of there songs that I have heard has melody, harmony and composition. The fact that they use non-traditional instruments and techniques does not mean there music is "bad" or "incorrect." If you only hear white noise, perhaps there is something wrong with your speakers.

  • I wish i could favorite comments, because yours is mine. Thank you for being a reasoning human being, even though we will never meet.

  • @whateley23 i don't believe he is under the influence of psychedelics during this interview. i do believe he has dabbled with them in the past, because it kinda shows in the music, but he is thinking and speaking way to clearly in this interview to be triping at that very moment.

pot maybe, or lack of sleep, but i doubt any research chemicals were involved.

  • @almightyseancore I don't think Nils does and psychedelic drugs. I think that his mind just works in ways that produce music like that. One of my friends who has never touched drugs writes weird music like that. Some people's minds are just like that.

  • @Falconis1 I don't know man. The whole band acts like they're burned out in this video- it could be lack of sleep or exhaustion but I have an inkling they all use psychedelics together lol

Hooray responding to year old comments!

  • @almightyseancore I agree, he's far too coherent and aware to be on psychedelics in this interview ahahaha perhaps he's a little burnt out from drug use or as you said experiencing sleep deprivation. I know I get loopy in my demeanor when I'm running on no sleep

  • @whateley23

Articulate and informing?? He managed to speak the names of the bands he's been in. What a fucking genius.

  • @the1andonlyMizMoon

obviously you stopped watching this interview after not even 2 minutes.

  • Whoops. I just looked at your profile. You're going to discard what I say because you believe that you have the duty to interfere in your neighbor's business, even when it has no effect on you. I believe that such an approach is evil and destructive of society and man. We can probably never come to an accord on this, so long as you refuse to accept reality and look only to your book for truth.

  • Where can i find more about this john cane?

there are many different spellings for that name and I can't seem to find anything that seems to be who he's talking about.

  • Go to google and type:

    john kane mathematician

    That'll bring it up.

  • hes actually pretty damn intelligent, listen to him talk about music theory.

  • a great great band

  • Carla's a total sweetie. I met her last night at a Faun Fables show and we chatted a bit, and she was so very nice to me.

It's weird seeing her all decked out like this. She just looked so NORMAL last night compared to this- just wearing cargo pants and a t shirt. No makeup. Hair down and plain. She almost looked out of place playing onstage next to the oddly dressed Dawn and Nils.

  • What has emo got to do with this band?

He colours his teeth when he goes on tour.

  • emo??? what the fuck,, you trendy fag.. this is underground . go back to your pop culture.

  • whats with his mouth?

  • I fucking love Nils. He is so cool

  • O, polskie to.

  • definitely different... worth giving a listen... idiot flesh is really interesting as well... do our institutions acknowledge the efforts of our composers? they may be different, but the bar doesn't do them justice... they should be put on at the best venues in town... i.e. boettcher music hall in denver or your favorite opera house in your town... that's my take... respect to all who make an effort at something... much love, my fellow humans, peace...

  • Right on! Theyre gonna gig at Turner Hall in Milwaukee April 12th, with Dub Trio. Beer will be served (where is beer NOT served in Milwaukee? LOL), but it's not just a "bar".

  • it was actually on april 14th, last night. all i have to say is...Wow...ive never seen or heard anything like it. very good show, amazing!

  • I bet you if you tied his hands behind his back he would find it difficult to communicate

    XD

    Only joking.

These guys are revolutionaries. Their work is so...abstract.

  • This interview made me want to rub peanut butter on my bible. My penis is Cobra Kahn.

  • carla is sexy as hell, Im getting a hard on just looking at her.

  • Comment removed

  • who the fuck is this guy?

  • I just discovered this collection of souls and my life is not quite the same since doing so.

  • who is this mathematician?

  • I'm wondering who John Kane is too. A cursory google search only turned up links to SGM and a white stripes song- I think they just made it up.

  • The only thing I came up with was another reference to SGM. I'd like to know more, too...

  • God Nils Should Be President. Bring back Idiot Flesh

  • this makes me love them even more. such eloquence.

  • kratos?!

  • bloody well spotted!!

  • the make up threw me off, the look was, differnt, not bad, but differnt, and he seems very insightful

  • Such strange people to look at. HAVING SAID THAT! It's fantastic that they ARE strange. Just goes to show that you can't judge books by their covers. Definate talent in these guys. They're such a relief to the bullshit that's out there now. If i need something odd that doesn't really fit the mood but still gives me goosebumps i pop in SGM. Such fantastic talented musicians They seem very nice too. Not pompus like other underground groups who think they're better because they're underground.

  • what a bitchin neck-beard

  • Can't we all just have a bong? I thought this interview was great. Kudos on the 'musicologist's nightmare' comment.

The way he describes the texture of industrial music is perfect. I'm into a bit of industrial music but I wouldn't say I'm into the genre... But there's something about it, and I think he summed it up.

    Hail SGM and Idiot Flesh.

  • This explanation of their style is a musicologist's nightmare. I love his gesticulations.

  • i noticed that, too. i've never met any of the band members, but they don't seem the least bit pretentious, despite having every reason to be.

    great interview.

  • he is so awesome ♥♥♥

  • no one is stupid because they don't like what you like. i quite like SGM. doesnt make me smarter/dumber than anyone.

  • That guy's got one hell of a beard.

    Awesome band.

  • and now, my impression of a retard...

    DREAMTHEATERLEDZEPPELINUNEXPECTAYREON!!!DON'T VIOLATE MY RULES!!!

thank you. i'll be here all week. don't forget to tip your waitress.

  • If NecroPumpkin would bother to look up anything about SGM, he would know that Nils has a Bachelor's in music, and Carla studied at the Peabody Conservatory, among others. Since he has made it apparent that he is studying music [therefor giving his opinion some kind of merit here on an SGM thread], I think he is afraid of anyone who would be willing to deconstruct their own classical training to make something new and organic. In essence, he is afraid of people with brains and free will.

  • I give huge thanks to the major labels in the recording industry for focusing only on their pet projects. They fuel the fires from which true art in music is born. By being independent true artists are able to create music that make life more worthwhile. Even if cash is hard to come by manytimes!. hail to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum!

  • This band is so genius.

I mean, its obvious from the music to being with, but hearing them speak only proves it further.

  • Also, to people saying that Nils should shave: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU??!!

    That. Is. An. Awesome. Beard.

  • 'Pretentious' means that 'pretending to be something thst you aren't'.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum don't do this at all. They are not pseudo-intellectual at all.

Anyone who calls them pretentious is most like doing so because they're a bit weird and experimental.

A lot of people use the word 'pretentious' when they mean 'that sounds abrasive and I'm too unimaginative to understand why other people would like it'.

As it happens, they're the pretentious ones.

  • yay nils!

  • Grow up NecroPumpkin.

  • You know what's hilarious? Dream Theater fans calling a band "pretentious". SGM are true artists.

  • Necro, a very important lesson you will need to learn in life is that assuming the music you listen to is "good" and anything else is "bad" is the HEIGHT of douchebagery.

Music is all about evoking an emotional response in people, and it wont be the same in every person. If you don't like SGM, then don't listen to them, but trying to tell SGM fans that this music is trite is pointless. And that goes for ANY type of music. Be it emo, boy bands, country music, whatever. Its all just music.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • said what better yourself?

  • What Wezli said about assuming the goodness and horror of music. Here's a sample quote: "A very important lesson you will need to learn in life is that assuming the music you listen to is "good" and anything else is "bad" is the HEIGHT of douchebaggery".

  • oh okay

  • That is so very true. I have a friend that scorns others for liking metal or basically anything he doesn't listen to. Everyone's always saying HE has bad taste in music... It's all about perspective, and saying that your perspective supercedes another is self-deification!

  • Don't get me wrong, I love this band, I really do. "in glorious times" is pure genius.

But Good lord, this guy *REALLY* needs to shave his neckbeard.

  • you should see his pubic region.

  • I've just found these guys and am looking into if i really like them or not, but I cant help but judge him for his terrible facial hair.

  • Funny, necropumpkin -- Trey (from Bungle) likes the SGM enough to have put out their record...

  • just discovered these guys. i'm blown. where the fuck have i been?

  • really, how can you like mr. bungle but be such a faggot?

  • shut the hell up necrofag. SGM is awesome. if you dont like them why bother clicking on the video link? and dont come talking shit if you didnt expect shit. on your music section at the end it says everyting els is shit. wow. that shows how open to different music you are, and SMG is VERY different from most shit you listen to. seriously cannibal corpse? they fucking suck. faith no more is the ONLY good band on your favorites. go back to your stupid shit. you dont deserve to listen to SGM.

  • ...not to mention the fact that, in order to fully appreciate sleepytime's music, one must have a good understanding of harmony and general theory. that's a generalization but i honestly think it's true. the likelihood is that you view them only as being "weird" but dont have any understand of WHY what they're doing is so creative and brilliant. you dont have to like them, but anyone who has the slightest clue will have vast amounts of respect for them.

  • i couldnt disagree more. they're doing soemthing that NO ONE has EVER done and they're all incredible musicians both technically AND compositionally.

if all you can say about their musicianship is that they are "average", then you are clearly (a) not a musician, or (b) not a GOOD musician.

the reason there's only a small group of people who love this band is because their musician is not accessible in anyway shape or form. it is the purest embodiment of "experimental" and "progressive".

  • they're not the only amazing band, they're my favorite band though. i just think they're brilliant and dont see how anyone who studies musics and UNDERSTANDS what they're doing, can not at the very least appreciate and respect them.

CHECK OUT MY BAND!! haha, and stop being such an asshole for no reason. google "periphery myspace"

    do it!! haha

  • ANYONE who has the slightest clue about harmonic originality will at the VERY least have a great amount of respect for this band. for me, i personally think they're the greatest band of all time, bar none. but if one is to dislike them, i'd say that they must at least acknowledge the caliber of musicianship and creativity in this band is incredible whether or not the result of those qualities is to the everyone's taste.

that requires a certain amount of objectivism however, which most lack.

  • fuck off nobody likes a fanboi, and they're nothing special. There's a tiny demographic who believe theyre some amazing pioneers by doing what thousands have already done. its fucking lame. i cant comment on their musicianship as being anything but on par with an average musician. I have seen alot worse but i have definately seen a wbhole lot better.

  • btw, i'd be curious to hear your opinion of MY band, we're called Periphery...i'm the singer. check out our myspace - google "periphery myspace" and you'll see it

i never miss a chance to promote my band! haha

  • and ya, these people do NOT do drugs. they're simply eccentric geniuses.

  • it's "genii", you tardnard.

  • what are you talking about? genii? that's latin for "geniuses"...

  • "and ya, these people do NOT do drugs. they're simply eccentric geniuses."

    octopus plural = octopi

    cactus plural = cacti

    genius plural = genii

    lolz @ t3h tardnard.

  • ya i know i said that. but "genii" is not a word in the english language, it is LATIN for "geniuses"...

the plural of the english word "genius" is "geniuses"

  • ok i looked it up and apparently we're both right haha

both "genii" AND "geniuses" are valid plural forms of "genius".

  • To the guys saying these guys are on coke. I really really fukin doubt it. SGM is a healthy bunch, Im guessing they dont even drink or do drugs in general. However I wouldnt rule out past drug use. Either way, these guys are artistic/musical geniuses

  • Brothers and sisters, we can only pray that the SGM make better use of their time here, in serious study of the insightful analysis posted about their work.

Why o why would they waste their time traveling the world, entertaining people with music and theatre, building instruments, making friends and being creatively fulfilled?

Nils must be on drugs, no one could have such enthusiasm for life and living their art naturally.

    Lord help us all!

  • ya but have you listened to their music?? it's fucking brilliant. harmonically and dynamically they're so far beyond everyone else. chordally and melodically they're fucking geniuses. they have such a wide range of textures and they simply could NOT be more original or unique. not to mention how DISGUSTINGLY tight they are live, their "weird" appearance and lyrics contribute greatly to enhance the mood of their overall performance.

i dont understand how someone could dislike this band.

  • Man, please just settle down. Who are you to judge music? I really think this band is great, these guys are very talented.

If you really think there are better bands out there, show me. Maybe I might turn out to like them. The more music the better.

  • Stupid youtube. I'm sorry, this was a reply to NECROPUMPKIN.

  • Who am I to judge music? I'm a human being with an opinion like everyone else on this fucking planet. If you think they're talented, that's your problem you have to live with. And if you consider this talent, I'm not going to bother to show you some actual musical talent, it will most likely fall upon deaf ears

  • we'll you don't have to show him, but why not humor me? Tell me what you listen to that's so great that my ears will bleed floods of orgasmic cum. Tell me about the bands you hear that could easily start a revolution, or cause a man to have an epiphany?

Share your musical genius with us, oh wise...ass.

  • Taking the last 6 out because they are classics that mostly everyone likes. That leave 10 total.

    Good 5/10

    Ok 3/10

    Shitsux 3/10

You're pretty above average (without the classics). Props for mentioning Mike Patton, but shame on you for saying Dream Theater.

alas, You seem like the type that WOULD like S.G.M. so...why don't you? They have better voices than nevermore, and they're almost as good as Mr.Patton.

  • Unexpect and Dream Theater are terrible and overrated, I personally find Iron Maiden overrated and bland, but most of those other bands you've listed are indeed quite good.

I do, however, enjoy SGM and can't really see why you'd hate them so much when you like those more Avantgarde bands you've listed. Each to his own I guess.

  • well i cant see how you wouldnt like unexpect dream theater or iron maiden. so lets leave it at that.

  • I'm pretty sure every SGM fan will have heard of all those bands before. Also, most of them don't even come close to SGM.

  • Um, how did you get that out of what I said?

  • *violates no replying rule*

  • Oops, sorry. I accidently clicked on reply.
