The snake in genisis was simply a snake. It was an explination as to why they slitherd "on thy belly will they crawl." Thats what a rabbi would tell you, its a preist that would tell you its the devil. Although I can see a coralation for a snake in that snakes were often symbolic of wisdom(i.e. it was on the tree of knowledge). Its got a literal, and symbolic translation.
