A head phone set is good for things like commentary for video. Where as the stand mic is better for...Oh say, webcam things.

Beyond modifying an volume in knob on the actual device there is a built in Windows function to raise a microphones gain. It is located under Start/Control Panel/Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio/Sound Recording/Volume/Microphone. Click the advanced button under the microphone slider in the main dialogue box and enable Microphone Boost and put the microphone slider to maximum. Also be sure to check skype for any discrepancies regarding your mic.
