"You may remember that Mark Twain preferred to lie supinely in bed while composing those rather dated and boring efforts which contemporary scholars try to prove meaningful. Veneration of Mark Twain is one of the roots of our current intellectual stalemate." John Kennedy Toole (A Confederacy of Dunces).
Itche Singer is a literary hero, a genius. You don't make him any favour comparing him to Mark Twain.
Nonetheless, its unacceptable of me to ignore the fact that Poland had a (relatively) huge number of Righteous Among the Nation recipients. The fact that one of the most anti-Semitic countries had one of the highest numbers of extremely brave and righteous individualists, just goes to show that its neither countries nor psychopathic dictators that execute genocide, it's ignorant conformists.
the Yiddish writer, Shalom Aleichem, once actually met Mark Twain. Feeling all self-confident about himself, Shalom Aleichem proudly said to Mark Twain, "Some people say that I am the Jewish Mark Twain," to which Mark Twain immediately replied, "No, it is I who is the gentile Shalom Aleichem."
Brilliant. Am I rtight and does he actually start his speech with: 'His Majesty...'? I am now reading 'The Magician of Lublin' and I find him a marvel. A mayven, if you wish.
