I don't really like the movie. It's a very good argument, but i think that they used it in a very bad way. The movie turns to a classic "yankie movie" a the end...
there are problems with this movie... they spend SOOO much effort to put this idea into someone's dream.. who's to say the guy wouldn't wake up and say, that was fucked up... and just never think about it again. they make such a big deal out of a dream, within a dream, WITHIN A DREAM.. WOW...? I've had dreams 20 layers deep... dreams within dreams is kind of a dated topic in my world. check the movie transcendent man.. its better :) you'll like it.
id give it a 7 at best...i am a huge psychological thriller fan, and this movie was very disappointing they took a great original idea and forced a conventional shoot em up blockbuster Hollywood format on it . Basically infuse it with a lot of action and guns , a little bit of an unresolved emotional/family past and boom u got ur self a best-seller...i wish they could have focused more on the psych aspect of it, made it a bit darker and less predictable
Awesome review. I'm sick and tired of people saying Inception is an overrated movie, and more importantly, that it sucks. Fuck them. It's the best movie of all time.
The movie has a great premise and good actors, but I felt that it was poorly paced (useless snow-mobile chase for instance) and that it didn't make good use of the setting. It's set in dreams, yet there is no unreal quality to them. I didn't hate it, but I've definetly seen better.
I thought this film was amazing! My boyfriend and I just watched it. I was slightly confused about the end (just deciding if it was real or not). It was great. I recommend everyone watch it! You'll love it!
I don't know... I think Inception was shallow. It also required too much suspension of disbelief, and if you're going to have a movie about getting into people's minds then it should be more creative... maybe if Charlie Kaufman wrote Inception it would have been better.
I agree with most of the points you make about Inception and it was a fantastic idea but for me I could not relate to the dreams at all. Maybe I am different but my dreams usually involve much more crazy stuff than what was in this film. Crocodiles, apemen, huge fires, ghosts who want to eat my heart, murderers, weird shaggy monsters walking down the street, they're my meat and drink when I'm asleep. A train going down the road was the weirdest thing in this movie. Not quirky enough. Fish:)
I have already commented your video on the Oscar 2011, but I've got no answer. I think that one of the main ideas of this movie makes no sense. One cannot dream two dreams at the same time. One can surely dream that one goes to bed, starts to sleep and dreams. But as soon one starts to experience the new dream, the experience of the former dream ceases. Maybe you can intermittently experience two dreams, but surely not at the same time.
Why people get so pissed when others don't think it is the most brilliant thing ever kind of says something. Why do you have to defend it? Do you doubt that it really is as great as you claim it is when confronted? I mean this is the only reason it would bother people so much when someone says they don't LOVE it.
Most say it was a good movie even. That's not good enough though. It has to be "brilliant" or you better go fuck yourself...haha
I generally agree, but I do wish that in the movie, Nolan could have captured the incomplete nature of dreams. I know everyone has different kinds of dreams in different styles, but from my experience dreams are something that are not entirely defined. It could have given more visual cue as to when (and at what level) dreams were.

I think it would have been even better if it was all a dream and his wife had been right the whole time and then he wakes at the end and she was still alive but then he spins the top and they don't show what happens that would have been a way better ending
The ending of this film can go either way to a viewer's favour. They can think the top fell, or they can think Cobb is still in limbo. There is no ground proof of either scenario but you MAY notice some differences in the setting and children's clothing, leading the audience to believe he is in fact in reality. The reason for the uncertainty is because Nolan wanted us to do what we are all doing...continuing the hype even after we watched the movie.
i loved this movie. its in my top 3. it resonated with me because i have experienced 'shared' dreams on more than one occasion. i found myself saying 'this is a great movie' several times while watching it.
I saw this movie twice and it is still one of my favorite movies ever. Surprisingly, knowing exactly what would happen the second time around didn't hinder the experience at all, but added to the overall depth of each scene.
Also, my sister's reaction to the end of the movie was probably the best ever. As soon as the last scene ended she exclaimed "FUCK! REALLY!?!?"
I would say " M. C. Hammer the movie. I mean Escher. I mean story. I mean spinnning top. I mean, just see the movie." of course it would come out all blubbery. But one question nagged at me every time I thought of the movie. that Saito guy, that exact speech he gave to him was the one he gave to Mal. And it all happened in the dream, so did Saito end up commiting suicide?
She's trolling. HAI GUISE IM HAWT ANDDD I UNDERSTAND INCEPTION. yeah right, as if we believe that bimbo. I know other people wrote this review for you...lolololol
I'd like to see Criss tie into "The Last Exorcism." Of course it's shlock horror at its best/worst, but as usual with this fare it's a sneaky, backhanded way of peddling religious propaganda - and Roman Catholic medievalism at that.
C'mon- the movie was nothing special. There was NOTHING thought-provoking, all the ideas were telegraphed, EVERY twist was over-explained, there were no surprises, and in no way was my perspective of reality or thought or life altered. It was a waste of mind. It was entertaining, sure, but it wasn't smart enough.
The movie was cool but please tell me what the hell the end meant. What happened and what was the reality of the whole situation? I want to know if it's worth bothering watching again. I am all about a good ending. Even if it leaves you kind of hanging, if it's a good movie you'll understand the meaning from that point. Sometimes it's only really explained in the extra's, like in "Moon" where just a little bit of any kind of ending, it's last information leaves you really thinking and imagining.
@longslidenyc *Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen the film*
The end was partily a clever trick, is he still in a dream or isn't he? I think he was in reality, but since you are not given an answer, you have to decide for yourself, but for me the real point was that Cobb didn't stay to watch the spinning top. He was no longer worried about it as he had been the whole film.
When I came out of the theater, and went to bed later that night, I had a dream that I was IN a dream... and Leo was there. Hahahahhaha but Inception KICKED ASS.
I *know* you didn't go to the theater dressed like *that*, young lady, or no one would have been watching the friggin film! (Except maybe Steaua who's always in dream mode anyway.)
I´m sorry. But many girls in Romania do dress like that, while getting the same action as in the movies. Don´t forget your 3-d glasses. In my case, I stick to Romanian and I.Bergman movies. Zomgits is too cool for me.
I enjoyed the film and wasn't disappointed at all. It works on so many levels. Not the first film to play with the idea of dreams (any Freddy movie for example), but Nolan does more with the idea. The ending can be seen in so many different ways and I think that was the best way to do so. Good review & I loved the bloopers.
what do you mean character driven, the characters all stayed the same throughout the film and they mostly bantered each other. blegh. the plot was not at all complicated. the average man's mind-bender. some parts i liked, some.
When Wantanabe was shot, why didn't the architect just fix him.... its THEIR dream after all, and there were none of the mark's subconscious, that knew he was shot, that were still around.
I don't watch TV. I have one that someone gave to me a few months ago, but I haven't cared enough to plug it in yet. And I'm living in Japan (although Inception is big here, too). So you could say that I was out of the loop. I hadn't even seen a trailer for it. For me, there was no hype. I went to see it, and as it was starting, I was like, "I wonder what this one will be about."
Well, it was an awesome movie. There are a lot of haters who hate movies just for being popular.
Inception is the oldest screen writers joke made manifest. "Well, it's about a dream but it's kind of a dream within a dream. But I kinda wanna go for a dream within a dream within a dream."-"You should go one further, you should write about a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream..."-"That's never been done before."---- That's the concept... a joke. And past all the high budget bells and whistles it's ALL concept. It's a condescending movie, and people are eating it up.
It was a good movie to watch once, but not again. The interesting thing was the twists and complexities of the story - once you've seen it, there's no reason to see it again.
I've heard such mixed reviews about this so I'm still skeptical about whether I'll enjoy it or not. I double major in Philosophy and Psychology and most of the people I know in my classes didn't like this movie. *shrug*
I've heard people say that if you are into sci-fi/generally thought provoking films it will basically seem like a tired rehash. There are so many fantastic movies like this that are collecting dust because they weren't holly wood block busters with well known actors.
I still think The Prestige is Nolans best movie, though I was not disappointed by Inception. Some philosophical aspects was not so convinceing to me, but if you can look beyond that, great movie. Of course, the desire to be non-conformist will surely make many people rant about how overrated it is, and how bad of an actor Di Caprio is.
"This movie's smart. It is also entertaining, and visually stunning." Damn good movie - refreshingly different and intensely intriguing. *Has* to be one of the top movies of the year, if not *the* top, and likely will be among the best for the decade. I don't think I drooled or talked incoherently coming out of the theater, but I probably couldn't manage to articulate better than, a slow gasping, "Wow...!" for several minutes.
OK, now you've done it. I do not enjoy going to a theater and sitting with 200 other people who can't turn off there cell phones, stop talking to each other, etc etc. But, bc U r U, now I gotta go see this fricken movie b c ur explanation made me gruel like ah uh uh well like YOU. Good job with the impossible, again.
I am nervous about this movie, it seems a little too much like the matrix, the cell, and that weird jim carry movie. Ugh, the dream movies are so cheezy. So, having said that, I'm afraid to see the movie because i might hate it.
The writers must have never had a lucid dream before. However i have never been able to share the lucid state with another, although there are old moves, dream yoga moves n old druid writings, but i cant bare to dream experiment longer than one month, shit gets easily mixed up. You ever lucid dream b4?
I thought this film was insane, I loved it! for anyone who has seen this already.... did you count 8 levels?? Everyone else denies this when I say it, I have to explain....over and over, lol.
I'm hoping that the movie's colossal success will be enough to convince Hollywood that a movie doesn't have to be based on an already successful franchise or a remake to draw in the crowds! I want to see more original big-budget blockbusters with great scripts and innovative plots like Inception instead of just the same tired, safe (or downright awful) tripe that's wheeled off the Hollywood production line.
It sounds like a mash-up of aspects of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Total Recall, The Matrix and Avatar(?); maybe an just another attempt at autological projection by the writers for the whole movie gendre itself to get inside your head and mess with it.
And I haven't even heard about this movie until I watched this... It is definitely a sign that I live far to isolated from society... maybe I just live in some kind of dream ;)
I didn't HATE inception. I'm not a "hater" if I think it was overrated...Actually I think it was pretty good. I'd prefer to watch it over the Matrix ANY day. However, it was overrated for a movie that did have holes and predictable outcomes.
Here's a hole: According to the movie, your brain processes info faster in a dream. However, how is your physical mind supposed to process info even faster than its physical limit just because you go into a dream within a dream? That made no sense.
@bb1televator "artistic liberties" - sure, some of it conflicted with known science (e.g. dream time dilation), but made for part of great storyline and plot.
@MichaelPaoli Yeah I get that. just about every film ever made takes artistic liberties to build up the film's premise and general logical makeup of it's world. One has to accept that to watch any sci-fi movie to begin with. However, this bit logical inconsistency in Inception seem to me as though it defied or was incongruent with the presumed logical parameters that the film itself initially established. It almost appears whimsical compared to the rest of the film's air of sophistication.
Am I dreaming?, or is this Criss's sexiest video yet?. Somebody please send me a sign. I was supposed to be watching a movie review but I was hypnotized by wondefully smooth looking legs and things too hot to mention.
I entirely agree with you. I saw this a while ago and I was just so freaking amazed by it. I came out of the cinema and was like "... Dude.", I so would've throwed money in all directions for a DVD to go watch it at home again.
Fuckin' ace, I lurfved it. Zat is all. Blubblobblib!
I was was one of the people expecting more than I should of going in to see this movie but that being said I was still impressed with the film I totally agree with the matrix/cell comparison I couldn't help thinking this was an introduction to a story rather than a stand alone movie, though I cant see DiCaprio making a appearance in a sequel I hope if a sequel is in the making Levitt's makes an experience as he was awesome as usual!

I'm hanging with the fish; it is overrated. All I did was sit there and pick holes in it. The science and psychology is bullshit. I laughed at inappropriate times. I lost interest several times (very bad!). The beginning was badly scripted. The ending was just poor. Things happen without explanation. The performances are neither bad nor are they noticeable. I didn't care about the characters. The action scenes were too closely shot. My biggest nitpick: Mal's accent. What the fuck was that?
@niriop The worse thing: the in-movie science contradicts itself...several times. Nolan needs to be sent to screenwriter's boot camp...
Despite all that, I still give it a 3/5; it did have quite a few interesting concepts, and the main events of the film did keep my interest and get me excited on occasion. My advice: watch it, but only as a cheap rental or when it hits your TV screens.
@niriop Hear, hear! The only major good thing about it was the 4-layered action with the same characters. That's about it. The rest was just a mediocre action flic with a weak sci-fi pretext.
I gave it a 7 (a.k.a. "Good. Worth seeing.") because of the layers of things going on in parallel, otherwise it would've been a 6 or worse.
Well, geez, now I don't know what to think. Only person I know who saw it disliked it and I'm generally not a DiCaprio fan, but now it seems pretty tempting.
I agree with you 100%. My friends fell asleep during it, however! I'm not sure how ironic that is, but I can't understand how ANYONE could be bored for a single moment of this film. I was captivated.
Totally agree with your review and I really haven't seen a movie with Leo in, that I didn't enjoy. This one has to be the pinnacle for him so far. Great concept , well executed by all.
I... I feel really bad. I generally agree with popular opinions on movies - what people think is good, I think is good, what people think is bad, I think is bad. Inception is the first movie I think that made me turn against the majority. I mean, all of my friends and even fucking Roger Ebert think the sun shines out of this movie. To me, it's just another action movie, that really underused the possibilities of a dreamscape, and had a bad script and acting. Mal's death scene? Yeah, great acting
What fish? What's that supposed to mean, anyway? To go join the retard crew if not as enthralled by it as you are? Bah...I give it a 7.5. I was disappointed.
I loved everything about this film. I've seen it three times now, and each time i see it I answer a question I had before, but end up with more questions. One thing I really don't get is why it's a bad thing to go to limbo. If killing yourself there wakes you up, how could they be stuck.
The best interrpretation I've heard though is that it is an analogy for making movies. Cobb the director, Saito the financer/producer, Ariadne the screenwriter and so forth. Best picture of the year.
The only thing that riddles me: Why do you get more time in each lvl? I mean, you don´t get another PHYSICAL Brain which restricts you, and your thoughts are still bound to that brain, so experiencing decades in mere seconds still should be impossible. But yeah, I know without the timelines the movie would be impossible and the movie is kickass! (I still miss my 4 extra lvls ; )
while i loved the movie there was one... well plothole i guess but maybe i missed the explanation. But remember how when the car dropped on the first layer of the dream, they lost gravity on the second layer. So, if losing gravity on the first layer causes it's loss also on the second layer, why doesn't it's loss on the second layer cause it's loss on the third layer? Maybe it's because it's so deep, i don't know...
I think there was only 1 mistake in the movie, I think the ending was meant to be ambiguous and leave the viewer wondering if it was all a dream but the last scene left to many clues to make it ambiguous. Still the best movie of the year by far.
@benjaminbartholomew Just out curiosity, what did you think was the ending? I'm not going to tell you mine yet. Not because I don't trust you, I just want to be the first to know whether you're right or not.
@CrissReviews An Oscar a/k/a the American Marketing Awards? Means little. Remember: "Ordinary People" won over "Raging Bull", and I could go on and on. In the words of Billy Shakespeare the Oscars are "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." Regardless, LC was an interesting, compelling actor when he was younger. In "Shutter Island"? Meh. Have not understood any of the Scorsese/DiCaprio collaborations.
@atthetopofmyvoice If you wanna criticize the film at least have a legitimate flaw to nitpick over. "Why didn't they give him a kick to get him out of the dream", seriously?
@DeathKnight725 You're right - that one detail was just nitpicking. My criticism of the movie is more about my perception of DiCaprio as an actor - vapid; the obviousness of Cobb's secret - he felt guilty over his wife's death; but primarily over the lack of emotional resonance from Cobb's "journey". Not connecting to his emotional journey I found no access point to the film. A purely subjective opinion, I understand.
Lucky for me i live in a city right at the ocean. I'm on my way out to talk to some fish.
I agree that it's really really well done, and that the actors did a damn good job.. Several times i found myself realizing that it was a movie, and what i saw wasn't anything but special effects. But let's be honest.. The idea of messing with peoples dreams isn't that original. It's by far the best movie about that subject imho, but still.. I enjoyed it, but i'm not blown away.
At first I though DiCaprio's performance was kind of weird, but then when he was the conversation with his dead wife in limbo everything made sense, he was acting that way because he is portraying a much older man, a man who has lived an entire lifetime.
@yiggoto - can you expand on this? I thought it was "good" but not "great" but it was still the best movie I've seen since Shutter Island. I'd be curious to know what holes and flaws you saw.
I also loved the movie, but being the nit-picking action fan that I am, did anyone else notice that the action scenes in the mountain fortress location were poorly staged? I had a hard time keeping track of the action. A minor flaw in an otherwise brilliant film.
I don't really like the movie. It's a very good argument, but i think that they used it in a very bad way. The movie turns to a classic "yankie movie" a the end...

C'mon- the movie was nothing special. There was NOTHING thought-provoking, all the ideas were telegraphed, EVERY twist was over-explained, there were no surprises, and in no way was my perspective of reality or thought or life altered. It was a waste of mind. It was entertaining, sure, but it wasn't smart enough.
ghostofsedition 1 year ago
The movie was cool but please tell me what the hell the end meant. What happened and what was the reality of the whole situation? I want to know if it's worth bothering watching again. I am all about a good ending. Even if it leaves you kind of hanging, if it's a good movie you'll understand the meaning from that point. Sometimes it's only really explained in the extra's, like in "Moon" where just a little bit of any kind of ending, it's last information leaves you really thinking and imagining.
longslidenyc 1 year ago
@longslidenyc *Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen the film*
The end was partily a clever trick, is he still in a dream or isn't he? I think he was in reality, but since you are not given an answer, you have to decide for yourself, but for me the real point was that Cobb didn't stay to watch the spinning top. He was no longer worried about it as he had been the whole film.

Rationalific 1 year ago
The inception is on the people in the theaters watching this movie.
(you)
You are being planted an idea by watching this movie. A movie is like a
dream so the movie itself is another layer. The actors acting out the movie
is another layer and the guy thinking up and writing the script is another layer
The idea that has been planted is that everything you see around you might
not be real and just a figure of your own conscience. Inception in 3min22? check :its just a ride by bill hicks.

There are so many fantastic movies like this that are collecting dust because they weren't holly wood block busters with well known actors.
moyga 1 year ago
I still think The Prestige is Nolans best movie, though I was not disappointed by Inception. Some philosophical aspects was not so convinceing to me, but if you can look beyond that, great movie. Of course, the desire to be non-conformist will surely make many people rant about how overrated it is, and how bad of an actor Di Caprio is.

That made no sense.
bb1televator 1 year ago
@bb1televator "artistic liberties" - sure, some of it conflicted with known science (e.g. dream time dilation), but made for part of great storyline and plot.
MichaelPaoli 1 year ago
@MichaelPaoli Yeah I get that. just about every film ever made takes artistic liberties to build up the film's premise and general logical makeup of it's world. One has to accept that to watch any sci-fi movie to begin with. However, this bit logical inconsistency in Inception seem to me as though it defied or was incongruent with the presumed logical parameters that the film itself initially established. It almost appears whimsical compared to the rest of the film's air of sophistication.

What the fuck was that?
niriop 1 year ago

CrissReviews 1 year ago 7
@CrissReviews I know she is French, but in no way was that a French accent. It was so irritating and off-putting her doing something neutral.
niriop 1 year ago
@niriop The worse thing: the in-movie science contradicts itself...several times. Nolan needs to be sent to screenwriter's boot camp...
Despite all that, I still give it a 3/5; it did have quite a few interesting concepts, and the main events of the film did keep my interest and get me excited on occasion. My advice: watch it, but only as a cheap rental or when it hits your TV screens.
niriop 1 year ago
@niriop Hear, hear! The only major good thing about it was the 4-layered action with the same characters. That's about it. The rest was just a mediocre action flic with a weak sci-fi pretext.
I gave it a 7 (a.k.a. "Good. Worth seeing.") because of the layers of things going on in parallel, otherwise it would've been a 6 or worse.

Kimbert91 1 year ago
I think there was only 1 mistake in the movie, I think the ending was meant to be ambiguous and leave the viewer wondering if it was all a dream but the last scene left to many clues to make it ambiguous. Still the best movie of the year by far.

Meh. @atthetopofmyvoice If you wanna criticize the film at least have a legitimate flaw to nitpick over. "Why didn't they give him a kick to get him out of the dream", seriously?
DeathKnight725 1 year ago
@DeathKnight725 You're right - that one detail was just nitpicking. My criticism of the movie is more about my perception of DiCaprio as an actor - vapid; the obviousness of Cobb's secret - he felt guilty over his wife's death; but primarily over the lack of emotional resonance from Cobb's "journey". Not connecting to his emotional journey I found no access point to the film. A purely subjective opinion, I understand.
atthetopofmyvoice 1 year ago
Lucky for me i live in a city right at the ocean. I'm on my way out to talk to some fish.
I agree that it's really really well done, and that the actors did a damn good job.. Several times i found myself realizing that it was a movie, and what i saw wasn't anything but special effects. But let's be honest.. The idea of messing with peoples dreams isn't that original. It's by far the best movie about that subject imho, but still.. I enjoyed it, but i'm not blown away.
jo05dk 1 year ago
At first I though DiCaprio's performance was kind of weird, but then when he was the conversation with his dead wife in limbo everything made sense, he was acting that way because he is portraying a much older man, a man who has lived an entire lifetime.
