get some rice and long socks. fill the bottom so that it's a big heavy but not too heavy. tie a knot and the tip of the rounded rice ball you just made. (you can also use tennis balls) the tie a knot at the end of the socks. now you have practice poi. for fire poi buy some 2in kevlar and go online and see a blog on how to make poi heads. get dog chains at the length you feel comfortable and swivels (it makes it easier.) if you doing it with fire HAVE A SAFETY!
well the tennis ball.. I would say one personal experience: If you're a man and you're a complete beginner, make it of something soft.. really.. I made my practice poi from foam rubber and put some small shots inside, so it's heavier.. and it's coll.. I can have children one day ;-)
I only have metal chained fire poi... I plan on starting with them... I may end up in extreme pain...
