And did Magic and Bird come to the NBA at the right time, or what? Just as the league was entering the Tape Delay Era, just as the league's players had an image problem as a bunch of violent, self-centered, coked-up, one-on-one streetball-playing mercenaries who only cared about their stats and their paychecks and were not very media-friendly or fan-friendly, just when the league was suffering from a bunch of business problems...
I think the rivalry between Bird and Magic has to be one of the greatest rivalries of all time. Not only were they both great players in their own right, they made everyone around them better as well, which is the true mark of a great player. They made basketball in the 80s. Definitely the NBAs best "golden age" in terms of sustained greatness. Not to mention there were a ton of other great teams, like the Hawks, Pistons, Bulls, Sonics, Rockets, Mavericks, etc.
@ChocolateKing21 -so true! It was almost impossible to win a championship in the 80s if you didn't have legends; but magic and bird stood out, along with Kareem, of course. Those players did what they did in the legendary days. Even the average teams did would win championships now.
@ChocolateKing21 No doubt Bird and Magic helped save the NBA, then they (along with help from Michael Jordan beginning in 1984) took the league to new heights.
@ChocolateKing21 Agree, they both could win games without putting up 30 points. They could control the game from several different angles...passing, rebounding, defense and clutch plays/shots and understanding the game like few ever have.
Bird won rookie of the year cause he took Boston from last place to the team with the best record of the year. He also had better stats, so don't say its bullshit.
So you're posting that you believe Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson and Danny Aingle all sucked and had nothing to do with Boston's success?
No they are all great players, but Kareem is the all time scoring champion, he is a six time league MVP, four time all star MVP. He won the 1985 finals MVP, and on and on. Bird didn't have that. He had high scores, rebounds, steals, and assists, not as many assists as Magic but he was an all round better player. I resent that you said that usually racists think Bird is better just cause you had a conversation with a couple of bigots. You are playing a race card just like many people. It is dumb!
So you admit Kareem was a better player then Parish, McHale, DJ, and Ainge combined?
As far as race goes: It's a racist country sadly. Not everyone is racist, but plenty are, and nothing has changed. People voted for and against Obama simply because of his skin color, and I promise you back in the 80's, there were some white hicks calling Magic the N word, and cheering for Bird because he was white. I never knew or heard this, but based on the country's track record, it most likely happened.
Excuse me but you are perpetuating racism by railing Bird's name just because a few rednecks like him cause he is white. You are apart of the problem by saying people who like him are most likely racist. Bird has had to put up with people like you his entire career. Like Isaiah Thomas and Denis Rodman saying if he was black he would be considered just an average player. You are the problem Asshole.
"Dont fear, cause 32 is here." lol. I love it. Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals was proof that Magic could win a title without Kareem. No disrespect intended towards the Capt though!
Magic Johnson should have won rookie of the year. He deserved it more then Larry Bird.
1 game does not speak for a season. Magic showed that he had superstar talent but that does not justify that he would have led the Lakers to the championship with Jabbar that season as a rookie. How many rookies have ever done that?
@Zeeboe Larry took the Celtics from a 29-53 record the year before to 61-21 in his Rookie season. The biggest single season turnaround in NBA history. That's why Larry won Rookie of the year.

Magic Johnson & Larry Bird were two P.R. dreams-come-true for the ill-reputed NBA of the 1970s.

Magic Johnson should of been in Space Jam instead of Michael Jordan!!!
Yoseph107 2 years ago
It would've been cool, but at the time it was made, MJ was the biggest name on the planet.
Also, the whole concept of Space Jam was that it was a commercial for Looney Tunes and the Jordan brand.

there are alot of MJs lol, jordan, magic, michaeljackson, hahaha i should change my name to MJ too :(
