  • @LeopardGeckoFry That wasn't an Indy 500 crash

  • Holy crap. 3 people died in the '35 race? Imagine that happening in a race today.

  • @LewisPearceYaussy

Five people were killed in the 1933 race, and a lot of blame for that was the 42-car field for that race. It was after that race that sweeping changes were made, including the trimming of the field to 33 cars, which was done because the officials thought that there should be only one car for every 400 feet of race track. And the tradition of starting 33 continues to this day, though I believe they can start up to 40 safely, in my opinion.

  • Even though im aware that Dan Wheldon didnt perish at Indy, When i heard the news this song instantly played in my head.

  • That Gordon Smiley crash was BRUTAL!

  • at 4:40 is that blood all over or is it fuel?

  • @hec2743 its fule.

  • Agree on Gordon smiley, maybe though he had it the best...instant death not suffering. The emp's said "every bone in his body was shattered, a wound to his side the size of a shark bite and he had been scalped by the catch fence and there was a grey trail leading upto the car, they grey material was Gordons brain smeared accross the track. Graphic i know but totally accurate. RIP HERO's and groundbreakers.

  • Great video, my friend. Also, thanks for not adding "Clubbed to Death" or "Requiem for a dream" as a music. ;)

  • unsafest motor sport.

    Foolish americans.

  • unfortunatly, you have to add dan wheldon to that list now

  • @krispragnell19 That wasn't indy 500

  • @krispragnell19 Só que Dan Wheldon não morreu em Indianapolis.

  • Gordon Smiley got it the absolute worse, google it if you have no idea what happened to him.

  • rollbars changed the conception of racing! God bless it, it saved a lot of lives

  • Art Pollard dear god that makes me sick as hell

  • look at how the cars changed so much anyway R.I.P. to all the people who died

  • that 1 "bystander" killed was an 8 yr old kid that was playing in his front yard when a tire went over the fence, across the street, and hit him in the head

  • top vid. i wonder if all the guys racing at indy and look at it wonder if there name will ever be there,, after dan wheldon those things are needing to be slowed,,there a limit to everything,, hopefully the indy 500 gets safer than the past,, cheers from australia (-:

  • Amazing video, and amazing music: CONGRATULATIONS

  • @Sunday2810 No, these are indy 500 accidents. Wheldon crashed in a IRL race.

  • 4:49 how do you survive that just to die to a contaminated blood transfusion?

  • @javelin901 Because it's the engine and gearbox you see in the footage. The cockpit was on the other side of the track in flames, and Savage tried to get out by himself.

  • The worst crash of Indy, and probably of the auto history was from Tony Renna..his car crashed against the fences at Indy, in 2003 his body was mutilated, the car exploded in pieces, the cockpit was torn in half and even the grandstand was damaged.

  • @ApocalypseForFree

i saw ONE replay of his crash on the indy NBC affiliate news station ONCE. they never showed it again. i think the only cameras there were the tracks cameras becasue it was testing in september or something so they own the footage and keep it under wraps. for good reason too

  • @ApocalypseForFree Doubt if it was worse than 1955 Le Mans

  • Was Clay Weatherly related to Joe Weatherly?

  • the video link at 3:23 is broken,it says '' this video is not active because the YouTube account asociated to this video has been closed''.

  • Thanks for the awesome video..it's definitely a "You Tube Best Of" You also have a ear for music!!

  • @f34dave Thanks!

  • great job for the video i give it an aaa+++

  • Very moving; A fitting and respectful tribute to some very brave men.

  • Just curious. Were the two drivers named Spence possibly related?

  • god bless all you boys.......thank you .....for giving it your all for us.....put the throttle down and the hell with the brakes.....god speed my racing brothers

  • Great and terrific video, good job

  • One of the most famous race tracks in the world, but one of the deadliest to. R.I.P to all the people who lost there life at that track.

  • Sad that Swede survived that crash, but died due to a blood transfusion :(

  • nice video by the way

  • gimme thumbs down pleassee

  • havnt wanked so hard in days, thanks

  • Great Job....RIP all pilots.

  • Pointless video glorifying brave drivers who died - and a terrible fucking song. DIsgusting.

  • Geez, those guys had real balls. No protection in the drivers area, sitting up high,a true tribute to those who lost their lives at Indy. Well done

  • Well, THREE Spence died at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

    - In 1929, William (Bill) Spence hit the wall in race and was thrown. Footage of this crash is shown in the mute film of 1929 "Speedway".

    - In 1938, the spectator Everett Spence was killed by a wheel.

    - In 1968, Mike Spence was killed by the front tire which hit his head.

    Really sad.

  • Now front engined cars... you'd need a sack the weight of the engine block to drive one of them.

  • Thanks guys for the nice reactions!

  • Great Video. Very haunting. I got teary eyed watching it. Good job.

  • Hey man... nice tribute. Kudos!

  • R.I.P for everybody

  • If you notice, in the beginning you can see there was at least one fatal crash a year at the Indy 500, either in practice, qualifying, or the race itself (except for the period the 500 wasn't held because of World War II). Over the past several years we've seen fewer fatalities due to the HANS device and more importantly, the SAFER barrier. Some of the later crashes wouldn't have been fatal had the walls been in place then.

  • Awesome video, great job & love the tune!

  • @Stixman41 Thanks!

  • SALUTE!

  • Was that blood spewing all over the track at 4:38?

These people are some of the bravest people to have lived. R.I.P All.

  • ya man well done video! RIP all!-love the tune also.

  • @callmeafanatic Thanks man!

  • @F1freak8 very well done video my friend...excellent work...my question is do you know if Bill Spence and Mike Spence were related...i may be dumb with regards to this but I was just wondering since that would be pretty sad and depressing if two generations of racers from the same family were tragically killed in the Indy 500 50 years or so apart

  • @ccraw87 Thanks! No, I don't know if they are related.

  • @ccraw87 They were not related. Bill Spence was an American driver while Mike Spence was a British F-1 driver. He was killed in a crash that doesn't look too severe when you see the film, but the right front tire came up and hit him on the head.

  • @RRaquello thanks for the information...i figured that they were not but I was just wondering...thanks for answering the question for me it is much appreciated

  • @ccraw87 I don't think they were related. Mike Spence was a Formula 1 driver from England. I'm not sure but I think the other Spence was from the States.

  • @ccraw87 No they are not related. At least not in any immediate fashion. Mike was born in 1936 in England, 7 years after the death of Bill who was from Los Angeles, CA and had no children.

  • @ccraw87 On interesting bit of family involved in the Indy 500 is the Unser family. After the death of Jerry Unser at his second Indy 500 his brothers Al and Bobby Unser went on to win the Indy 500 along with Al Unser Jr., Jerry's nephew. Jerry's youngest son, Johnny even competed in the race after his father's death.

One of the worst crashes at the Indy 500 was the Danny Ongias crash in '81 which he someone survived and even ran the 500 again at 54 years old in '96 after Brayton died.

  • Gordon Smiley ... the most horrific crash.

  • Gordon Smiley's crash was just insane, no kind of safety measures can prevent from such accident...

  • @Erik2Ammo That can said about Art Pollard's.

  • wtf stubby stubblefield sounds like someone off family guy

  • @WhuBilly10 Lol

  • @WhuBilly10 Ikr?

  • good video, man......sorry for all of them :'(

    heroes

  • @caramelosspeed Thanks!

  • 1939 video ... wow ...

  • So many names, most coming from pre 1970 and thats due to saftey but still holy shit

  • stricktly spoken Savage wasn't race fatality

  • Hey Greg i diddnt forget about ya pal! GREG MOORE oct 31 1999

  • @6047223521 Greg isn't Indy.

  • @senna197488 No Greg died at Fontana California, I was there.

  • Paul Dana was killed at Homestead Speedway in 2005

  • @lotusfirebird: 2006...

  • just to set the record straight, when the screen flashed "Keith Andrews 1957"

a picture of 1950 winner Johnnie Parsons in 1953 was shown on screen.

and, the only thing that would make Indy the deadliest is it is one of the oldest, plain and simple

  • what about salt walther in 73?

  • @gassyguy34 he is still alive you idiot

  • @gassyguy34 Yeah Salt Walther had a horrible crash, but he's still alive

  • @F1freak8 Alive and in prison somewhere.

  • @MissEgasMoniz Ah ok I didn't know

  • @gassyguy34 he didn't die. Today right now he's serving 3 years in an Ohio prison. God bless his soul 4ever. He gets broken physically and emotionally.

  • @RockHotTamales

In fact, Walther not only survived, he was back at Indy through the rest of the 70s and even ran four NASCAR races, including the Daytona 500 in 1976-'77. In fact, his best NASCAR finish came in the 1976 Daytona 500, when he finished 12th, despite an early spin. In 1990, he nearly qualified at Indy again, but was the last driver bumped from the field. He tried to bump his way back in the field, but failed.

  • that trippie one watch?v=YNoh3Xi8pvs

  • that good watch?v=YNoh3Xi8pvs

  • Incredible how swede savage didnt die in this crash. Really upsetting that after this the hospital he went to let him down.

  • There is 0 reason why open wheel drivers dont have a canopy over them to at least protect their heads from hitting a wall at 180mph.

  • most of people say all you need to race on this track is to know how to turn left and not fall asleep.

i'd say you also need balls.i would never drive on this track at 300km/h.(about 187 miles)

  • Holy Cow 108 people lost their lives at the speedway!

  • And Paul Dana?

  • @rodrigomvoyage Paul Dana's crash wasn't Indy 500.

  • @F1freak8 Oh, thanks by the information.

  • @F1freak8 It was Indy 300

  • WOW people seem to build too much speed before turn three.

Then they spin and it all goes black...

  • Thanks for posting. I'm not sure if Indianapolis is the deadliest race track being that some 80 people were killed in the 1955 24 Hours of Lemans incident alone, and I know numerous others died there over the years. Would be interesting to know more on that topic.

  • @Cancrizans In terms of drivers. Indianapolis is the dealiest track in the World. 56 Drivers have perished racing. I believe overall, due to the 1955 Le Mans Disaster, Le Mans is the deadliest track on Earth. but 1955 Le Mans would be an extreme outlier. therefore many consider Indianapolis to be the deadliest track in the World.

I think the top 5 deadliest tracks on Earth (5-1) are Le Mans, Daytona, Monza, Nurburgring and Indianpolis.

  • @Cancrizans My mistake. Nordschleife sadly has witnessed the deaths of 73 drivers, and 3 officials (no records on spectators). The most recent death at Nordschliefe being this year, Leo Lowenstein. nonetheless, Indianapolis is still a hell of a track. in total (drivers): Nordschliefe (73), Indianapolis (56), Monza (52), Daytona (24) and Le Mans (24). That is all the information i can provide

  • omg wtf 3:52 - 4:06 theres no way he would of lived the drivers knew it 2

  • Lmao hahaha that was humorious funny stuff there .:)

  • I also own a diecast of Vukovich's car the year. The powere under that hood was amazing!

  • For anybody who is wondering who the bystander is its a kid. He was outside, in his front yard when a crash happened. He was struck by the tire. He then died later.

  • good video my dad, uncle and myself were there when gordon smiley died in 82. we were 10 rows up from where he finally came to rest frightning. at 2:23 it's amazing how the cars were built with no give at all, what g-forces. again great post

  • @bozowild

    Thanks!

  • @bozowild yeah but back then they really didnt know that much about that. Also, they wanted to make the cars the lightest they could get them so, your right in some ways.

  • would that make indianapolis the most deadliest racecourse then?

  • @tracid303 yeah I think so.

  • @tracid303 what about the isle of man bike race

  • @tracid303 The Isle of man bike race has killed over a hundred riders in it's time.

Low stone walls plus overpowered bikes = lots of dead riders.

  • @jimmywrangles EXCELLENT POINT !!!

Also, the Le Mans crash only involved 2 drivers. The rest were spectators.

  • @tracid303 it's the oldest for sure.

not a lot of safety back in the day. safety has come a long, long way.

  • I think sweed shoudn't be on the video, since he isn't killed by the crash but killed by blood transfusion.

    but the video is great.

  • @tomateiro

Yeah I know he wasn't killed in the crash; I wrote it in the discription.

  • @F1freak8 yeah but how many of those drivers were pronouced dead at the hospital. All of them probley were.

  • @margarettapolarbears Thats track policy. No one is pronounced dead at the track. There are some though, that it was blatantly obvious what happened. No one could have thought Gordon Smiley might have a chance with half of his brain splattered on the race track.

  • lol

  • my great uncle bought the car unser died in and basically used it as a design for his own. the car is stilll runnin today. if you want info look up Chenowth roadster on google. it was the first chevy v8 to attempt to qualify

  • Hey, thanks for this info!!

  • no prob, theres videos of the car on metacafe i believe

  • Well made video.

    RIP

  • Thanks!
