Five people were killed in the 1933 race, and a lot of blame for that was the 42-car field for that race. It was after that race that sweeping changes were made, including the trimming of the field to 33 cars, which was done because the officials thought that there should be only one car for every 400 feet of race track. And the tradition of starting 33 continues to this day, though I believe they can start up to 40 safely, in my opinion.
Agree on Gordon smiley, maybe though he had it the best...instant death not suffering. The emp's said "every bone in his body was shattered, a wound to his side the size of a shark bite and he had been scalped by the catch fence and there was a grey trail leading upto the car, they grey material was Gordons brain smeared accross the track. Graphic i know but totally accurate. RIP HERO's and groundbreakers.
that 1 "bystander" killed was an 8 yr old kid that was playing in his front yard when a tire went over the fence, across the street, and hit him in the head
top vid. i wonder if all the guys racing at indy and look at it wonder if there name will ever be there,, after dan wheldon those things are needing to be slowed,,there a limit to everything,, hopefully the indy 500 gets safer than the past,, cheers from australia (-:
@javelin901 Because it's the engine and gearbox you see in the footage. The cockpit was on the other side of the track in flames, and Savage tried to get out by himself.
The worst crash of Indy, and probably of the auto history was from Tony Renna..his car crashed against the fences at Indy, in 2003 his body was mutilated, the car exploded in pieces, the cockpit was torn in half and even the grandstand was damaged.
i saw ONE replay of his crash on the indy NBC affiliate news station ONCE. they never showed it again. i think the only cameras there were the tracks cameras becasue it was testing in september or something so they own the footage and keep it under wraps. for good reason too
god bless all you boys.......thank you .....for giving it your all for us.....put the throttle down and the hell with the brakes.....god speed my racing brothers
If you notice, in the beginning you can see there was at least one fatal crash a year at the Indy 500, either in practice, qualifying, or the race itself (except for the period the 500 wasn't held because of World War II). Over the past several years we've seen fewer fatalities due to the HANS device and more importantly, the SAFER barrier. Some of the later crashes wouldn't have been fatal had the walls been in place then.
@F1freak8 very well done video my friend...excellent work...my question is do you know if Bill Spence and Mike Spence were related...i may be dumb with regards to this but I was just wondering since that would be pretty sad and depressing if two generations of racers from the same family were tragically killed in the Indy 500 50 years or so apart
@ccraw87 They were not related. Bill Spence was an American driver while Mike Spence was a British F-1 driver. He was killed in a crash that doesn't look too severe when you see the film, but the right front tire came up and hit him on the head.
@RRaquello thanks for the information...i figured that they were not but I was just wondering...thanks for answering the question for me it is much appreciated
@ccraw87 I don't think they were related. Mike Spence was a Formula 1 driver from England. I'm not sure but I think the other Spence was from the States.
@ccraw87 No they are not related. At least not in any immediate fashion. Mike was born in 1936 in England, 7 years after the death of Bill who was from Los Angeles, CA and had no children.
@ccraw87 On interesting bit of family involved in the Indy 500 is the Unser family. After the death of Jerry Unser at his second Indy 500 his brothers Al and Bobby Unser went on to win the Indy 500 along with Al Unser Jr., Jerry's nephew. Jerry's youngest son, Johnny even competed in the race after his father's death.
One of the worst crashes at the Indy 500 was the Danny Ongias crash in '81 which he someone survived and even ran the 500 again at 54 years old in '96 after Brayton died.
@gassyguy34 he didn't die. Today right now he's serving 3 years in an Ohio prison. God bless his soul 4ever. He gets broken physically and emotionally.
In fact, Walther not only survived, he was back at Indy through the rest of the 70s and even ran four NASCAR races, including the Daytona 500 in 1976-'77. In fact, his best NASCAR finish came in the 1976 Daytona 500, when he finished 12th, despite an early spin. In 1990, he nearly qualified at Indy again, but was the last driver bumped from the field. He tried to bump his way back in the field, but failed.
Thanks for posting. I'm not sure if Indianapolis is the deadliest race track being that some 80 people were killed in the 1955 24 Hours of Lemans incident alone, and I know numerous others died there over the years. Would be interesting to know more on that topic.
@Cancrizans In terms of drivers. Indianapolis is the dealiest track in the World. 56 Drivers have perished racing. I believe overall, due to the 1955 Le Mans Disaster, Le Mans is the deadliest track on Earth. but 1955 Le Mans would be an extreme outlier. therefore many consider Indianapolis to be the deadliest track in the World.
I think the top 5 deadliest tracks on Earth (5-1) are Le Mans, Daytona, Monza, Nurburgring and Indianpolis.
@Cancrizans My mistake. Nordschleife sadly has witnessed the deaths of 73 drivers, and 3 officials (no records on spectators). The most recent death at Nordschliefe being this year, Leo Lowenstein. nonetheless, Indianapolis is still a hell of a track. in total (drivers): Nordschliefe (73), Indianapolis (56), Monza (52), Daytona (24) and Le Mans (24). That is all the information i can provide
For anybody who is wondering who the bystander is its a kid. He was outside, in his front yard when a crash happened. He was struck by the tire. He then died later.
good video my dad, uncle and myself were there when gordon smiley died in 82. we were 10 rows up from where he finally came to rest frightning. at 2:23 it's amazing how the cars were built with no give at all, what g-forces. again great post
@bozowild yeah but back then they really didnt know that much about that. Also, they wanted to make the cars the lightest they could get them so, your right in some ways.
@margarettapolarbears Thats track policy. No one is pronounced dead at the track. There are some though, that it was blatantly obvious what happened. No one could have thought Gordon Smiley might have a chance with half of his brain splattered on the race track.
my great uncle bought the car unser died in and basically used it as a design for his own. the car is stilll runnin today. if you want info look up Chenowth roadster on google. it was the first chevy v8 to attempt to qualify

Well, THREE Spence died at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
- In 1929, William (Bill) Spence hit the wall in race and was thrown. Footage of this crash is shown in the mute film of 1929 "Speedway".
- In 1938, the spectator Everett Spence was killed by a wheel.
- In 1968, Mike Spence was killed by the front tire which hit his head.
Really sad.
