It was $2,000 from Wacom's site, not sure what it goes for now since they have the new model.
No it didn't improve my drawing, it made the drawing I did easier, but ultimately the only thing that will improve your drawing is your skills and your practice, tools are just for convenience.
Pros it's easier to make long, sweeping strokes and see where you're going, overall it's faster and more efficient. Cons not much except it's not very mobile.

@Stickymation Thanks very much! And yeah, I plan on doing some more videos sometime soon, I just need to cobble together some free time to do it. I think if I can make it work I'd like to put up a new video every few weeks, but we'll just have to see how things go.
@TwilightVids4Life The closest thing I know of would be an iPad or a tablet PC. The thing with iPads is they don't have pressure sensitivity, and tablet PCs have both the tablet and a computer for the same price so quality is bound to suffer at some point. There are also tablet slates (Asus makes one) that are essentially tablet PCs minus keyboards, so basically a screen you can draw on with an OS already installed, but I've never used one so I can't say if they're good or bad.
@lilthug19908 It gets a little bit scratched, but it doesn't get in the way of working at all. And yeah some dirt can build up on it, but you just wipe it down every now and then and it's fine. Overall it's quite sturdy.
@Andantonius@lilthug19908 well sir, I haven't got the faintest idea how you get scratches on your cintiq. I have my cintiq for a year and a half now and it still looks like new. I haven't got scratches at all. I guess it depends on how you use your cintiq. I work on it every week and I use a smudgeguard-glove on my hand. Before I start working on it i wipe it down every single time. Maybe it's the pen tip you're using. I only use flexible pen tips. Perhaps it's those hard plastic tips you use?
@knakhstr pls delete this video???? Well if you cant check it here you can check it at others. He is showing the workspace and how he work, Not the quality/delay. (But really, i want to know that too.)
Watched you on DA, some really nice work on there ^.^
Also keep trying to find a similar tablet to the Cintiq but its really hard to find the one with the lcd display, do you know if there are any other makes or models out there that aren't over £500 because i would really like one and currently don't have the money to spend on one. Keep up the good work though man (:
And unfortunately no, I don't know of any except for the Cintiq, and if I did I couldn't really recommend them because from my experience Wacom is the only really reliable brand for tablets. You could get a tablet PC, but those are the same price as a Cintiq plus they have a computer so the quality of the tablet is bound to be lower. I would recommend just starting off with an inexpensive Bamboo or Intuos tablet, you learn to draw off-screen pretty quickly.
@Andantonius I found a Hanvon Sentip which is pretty similar to the other Cintiq but wouldn't risk paying the same price when i could get a wacom for roughly the same. Yeah thought that might be the case so waiting for my intuos to come, just got to make some work space for it (:
@Andantonius There is a wacom cintiq 12wx version that's pretty much a smaller 12inch screen of the 21ux and that goes for about 1000ish Canadian. I have a question, I'm looking into buying a tablet for my program i'm in (getting into digital art n what not) and I was wondering since you mentioned the bamboo tablet, is it worth getting? is it a big adjustment or do you find the transaction to be not to bad? after seeing the 21UX i want to get it but i dont think its smart for my first tablet
@Mike4UFC Yeah, I definitely wouldn't recommend getting a Cintiq as your first tablet, digital art is something that takes some getting used to, so it's best to start with something less expensive until you're doing it enough to warrant something more expensive. If you're doing digital art in a class or for future work I'd probably go for a small or medium Intuos, if you're just experimenting as a hobby a Bamboo would be plenty.
@stuart123dark Theres a Hanvon SenTIP which is a direct draw on display tablet thats a few hundred pounds cheaper! not many reviews about it though but google it :-)
@SUPERJAILrockz11 As far as I know Cintiqs are the only tablets where you can draw right on the screen, except for tablet PCs which I've never used and don't recommend because it's the same price plus a computer which means quality has been shunted somewhere in the process. I would always recommend buying Wacom tablets, I've heard nothing but horror stories about other brands, and if you start with a Bamboo or Intuos it's quite inexpensive, you get used to not drawing on the screen pretty quick.
@SUPERJAILrockz11 You can use anything, as far as I know there's only a free version of gimp. Like I said, the tablet is just a tablet, what software you're running depends entirely on your computer.
@renandstimpyfan1234 It'll work with everything, it's just a tablet, what software you use depends only on your computer. But I would agree with Silv3rDream that if you're dropping 1-2 grand, Photoshop or Painter and an Intuos might be a better investment.

i have never got my 12wx and my macbook to match colours, i have re-calibrated but it is still so off, too off to use my cintiq for colouring, but so many other people seemed to not have a problem, help!
@tobaccoflavouredrink Have you tried buying an actual calibration tool? It doesn't seem like it should be a problem, unless your Cintiq is just damaged somehow.
@Dressommer Haha, no it's just a lamp I found at Office Depot or something. A plain desk lamp, but with a magnifying glass in it, you can probably find them all over the internet or at local office supply stores.
Doesn't the tablet get scratched after sometime? I've heard Cintiq users complaining about that. Really wanted one of those and I just needed to know these things before I can invest on a massive 2000 USD.
@TheZodiacNeophyte It does get a little bit scratched, but not at all to the point where it gets in the way of working. And if you want to have a slightly higher maintenance, you can use the felt nibs with your pen that won't scratch it at all, they just wear down quicker so you'll need to restock on nibs more often. But either way, I haven't found scratches to be a problem.
@nataliawasilewska97 Depending on the brand and model, anywhere from 25 to 2,000usd. :P
Personally I would always suggest buying Wacom tablets, they're the most reliable brand, and if you're relatively new to digital art I'd suggest getting one of their Bamboo tablets, they're as cheap as 70usd. Then later on if you find you really enjoy it you can upgrade to an Intuos or Cintiq, and if you don't like it you haven't lost a ton of money.
There is some lag sometimes between the brush stroke I have on-screen with my Toshiba Tecra and the point where the line actually shows up, ranging from about half a second to two seconds. Is there any drawing lag on the Cintiq or does it depend on the computer it is connected to?
@MrShockZero It all depends on the computer, there's no real lag from the tablet, but if you use a bigger brush or higher resolution than your computer can handle it might lag a bit behind the pen. Usually when people think the stroke is lagging behind the pen is just because it's not calibrated for their viewpoint, which is easy to fix in the tablet properties.
@overlordprincess You can use it on either, but you need to have a power outlet nearby cause the Cintiq is too hefty to get its power just through the usb cable.
@overlordprincess I'm pretty sure the 12 inch model still needs a power outlet to function. I may be wrong, but I'd definitely double check or ask someone who has one before you spend a grand on it and find out it's not as portable as you were expecting.
@artisttutorials there is the 21'' model that you can get on Amazon for about $1700.00 (or you can get a "refurbished" one for $1600) and retail ( straight from the company ) they are usually about $2200.. which if you're REALY into digital art, and have an actual reason to get one ( such as a comic artist/publisher ) is still a good idea.. its just saving up for it that discourages most people from getting them... ( I am currently saving for the same model one as shown in the video :D )
I've been working on a Wacom Bamboo tablet...but it's hard for me to digital ink my work on it....would you recommend an Intuos tablet or should I just wait and invest in a Cintiq? What are the benefits of an Intuos tablet?
@PoorMex Well, upgrading to an Intuos is mainly for the additional expresskeys and more working space on a larger model, which isn't going to make a big difference for inking. A Cintiq is somewhat better because you can see where you're going, but honestly if you're doing a lot of inking I'd recommend trying out sumi ink and a nib pen, like speedball, it would only cost you like 20 bucks to get the supplies and I think it's easier, faster, and looks nicer than inking digitally, even on a Cintiq.
@Andantonius What Graphic Tablets let you see what you are drawing e.g. show the computer screen on there. I'm looking at getting one and I just feel more comfortable being able to see where I'm drawing because it just sounds really complicated having to look at the screen whilst not looking where you are drawing. Thank You.
@Vikksi2796 As far as I know the only ones are these, Wacom Cintiqs, either the 12 inch or the 21 inch. The other alternative would be a tablet PC, but I haven't heard great things about them from artists I know who've tried them.
But if you're just starting with digital art, I'd recommend getting a Wacom Bamboo or Intuos, because Cintiqs are really expensive and you don't want to buy one just to find out you don't like digital art. You'll get used to looking at one place and drawing at another.
I've been using traditional pencil and paper for over ten years now, I now have the money to get the Wacom Intuos4, because I've been wanting a tablet for a while now, and am already pretty good at drawing.I will be saving up for the 21UX in the meantime though.
@Spartan69139 Basically what Medionbox said, yeah. Most tablets do not have a screen and require a normal monitor to work, like Wacom's Bamboo and Intuos tablets, both of which are more than enough to create high quality digital art. As far as I know the only tablets you'll find with screens are either Cintiqs or Tablet PCs, and Tablet PCs don't have as much control or sensitivity from what I've seen.
@Angelal98 I'd definitely recommend getting one of Wacom's Bamboo tablets if you're just starting with digital art. It's inexpensive and it's more than enough to create great digital art; then later on if you decide you really like working with it and want to upgrade you can get an Intuos or Cintiq. It's a much better option than diving in with one of the more expensive tablets just to find you don't like using them. So yeah, I'd suggest starting off with a Bamboo tablet for sure.
If some are wondering about getting something like this- and you happen to have a DSi or DSiXL, then you should download Art Academy for 800 Points. It's a pretty sweet 'program/game' that teaches you the basics of drawing and techniques for painting. It's much more realistic than anything I've seen (even the program this guy is using). It isn't, however, 'better'. I wish Nintendo can make an application for the DSi that improves on Art Academy.
@begzodiscool Both. Being able to draw with just a pencil is essential if you plan to be an artist; draftsmanship skills need to be present no matter if you're drawing with pencil, oil paint, or a cintiq. It's important to keep up traditional art practices, every successful digital artist does lots of sketches with pen and pencil at some point, and even goes back to things like oils and acrylics at times. I'd say start with pencil, practice your skills, and get digital tools afterwards.
You are the most STUPID person i've ever seen, btw i had to stop vid and run away, your voice is HORRIBLE, you speak like a 2 years old girl: Dish Ish Wery Naish? WTF Dude learn to speak properly
@ParanormalPixel Weirdly enough, Ikea sells those little guys for decorations, but they work. Depending upon where you live and what stores you have access to, you can also purchase them at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or online at a store like dickblick. I'm sure amazon and ebay have them, too.
I have a tablet pc HP2730p with Win XP tablet pc. I originally bought it for taking notes in the class, but now I am interested in learning to draw. Which free software I should begin with?
@mamatalu I would suggest trying out either GIMP or OpenCanvas.
GIMP is probably the most popular free software out there for drawing and it seems to work pretty well. OpenCanvas is also pretty popular (mainly for its ability to have group painting sessions) but it was changed to a retail software instead of freeware a while back, so the only free version is 1.1
You could also look in to buying Photoshop Elements or Painter Essentials; both are great painting tools and only cost about $100 each.
OH! I want that tablet! But.. I have no job cause my momw ants me to focus all my attention on school haha. But i do get allowence and let me tell you all something. Save ALL of your loose change you will be shocked on how much it adds up!
@paintdataint I haven't really done much printing, but I assume it's like any other monitor; If you calibrate it and learn about the printing process, you'll be able to get the kind of results you want with a little practice.
man i would do anything for that, i run out of paper all the time and i've been thinking of gettting a drawing tablet, thing is i thought All tablets had a screen you can see on lol 2k for one of these..my god its seems like it would be annoying having to look at the computer while drawing somewhere else, is it hard first using one without a screen
@MIKEHUNT7531 It's certainly convenient to have the screen, but you don't really need one, especially if you're getting started. It's a little awkward to use a standard tablet and draw on the tablet while looking at the screen, but you get used to it pretty fast and it's much smarter to start out with a Bamboo or an Intuos, then upgrade to a Cintiq if you like them and decide to stick with it.
@SpecialSuperAwesome In the video I'm using CS4, but it doesn't really matter, the tools are only as good as the person who uses them. Photoshop Elements has more than enough to create digital art.
@exxod255 It took me about a year, but that doesn't really matter; it's up to you to decide how hard you would want to work or how much you would want to save to be able to get one. :)
And of course always remember that it's just a tool; pencils and paper are all that you really "need" to make art, and a simple (and inexpensive) bamboo is all you'd "need" to make digital art. Anything beyond those is just a pleasantry.
@SnowWolfAlpha Haha, thanks, but I couldn't do much worse if I tried. :P
And I went for the 21 just cause I didn't really need the portability (which I don't think the 12 has much of anyways) and wanted the extra space to work; and I haven't regretted that decision so far. It's nice to have a large amount of screen space to work on, especially since I no longer use dual monitors.
@Yellowknight888 Yes you can. As long as it's hooked up to a computer, it functions just like a monitor and has a tablet built in. I use mine as my main monitor.
@Andantonius just to add a bit, in default mode it is slightly on the angle, as it is designed for drawing, other than that as mentioned above and it can be custom straightened
i've never felt so much rage, envy, joy etc etc before. I want this more than ever.
Does this have to be hooked up to the PC all the time or can you use it anywhere and save your psd to the tablet or usb? I'm thinking of getting the 12 because I feel like I can draw better when I'm away from home.
@Jinxxed0 It has to be hooked up to a computer to work; it's basically just a monitor with a tablet behind it. But if you have a laptop with the proper inputs, you should be able to use it with that. It also requires a power outlet though (not sure about the 12, but I think it does too), so it's still not terribly portable.
@Andantonius You can pick up an Axiotron Modbook for less than a 21ux - it's basically a macbook pro modded into a portable wacom enabled tablet PC. 15" working area though, of course. Best bet if you want something portable.
@pgf95 Depends on what, "it" is. They're definitely not ideal for rendering large areas, no. But they're decent at doing quick sketches, and they excell if you're drawing out all your perspective on paper.
Thanks for the video.. and I just went straight away and bought myself a SmudgeGuard. Probably should have gotten two, one for digital, and one for graphite on paper.

For how I learned to draw, there's no secret, just practice practice practice. I'm currently a student at The Art Department, so just lots of study and hard work has gotten me this far.
And I do kinda sell work, I've had a few commissions but don't make a living off of them, that'll have to wait till I'm more skilled. :P
Hi, I am a photo retoucher....could this be beneficial to my work flow? I'm using a Wacom Intous 3 right now. My main retouching consists of skin retouching (blemish removal, smoothing, texture preservation, etc.) and minor stuff like slimming figures, and background clean up. Will it help or am I just getting too attracted to this sweet toy?
@cheesechick529 Hmmm... I don't think it would really be hugely beneficial for photo retouching. It's useful for painting because it's easier and faster to make accurate marks, but I don't think you need to do much of that in photo retouching.
So it'd probably be more fun to work on, but I don't imagine it would make a huge difference in efficiency. You might try visiting an electronic store and see if they have any on display and play around with it for a while.
Wow.. what's with the amount of dislike- people jelly? :s

okay, i have a ton of questions... (sorry...)
how much was the cintiq when you got it?
do you think it improved your drawing at all?
some pros and cons please...?

Hello Andatonius!
The drawing lamp you have - is it one for especially drawing, or?
it's very nice!
What's the brand and model.
Dressommer 7 months ago
@Dressommer Haha, no it's just a lamp I found at Office Depot or something. A plain desk lamp, but with a magnifying glass in it, you can probably find them all over the internet or at local office supply stores.

Doesn't the tablet get scratched after sometime? I've heard Cintiq users complaining about that. Really wanted one of those and I just needed to know these things before I can invest on a massive 2000 USD.
TheZodiacNeophyte 8 months ago
@TheZodiacNeophyte It does get a little bit scratched, but not at all to the point where it gets in the way of working. And if you want to have a slightly higher maintenance, you can use the felt nibs with your pen that won't scratch it at all, they just wear down quicker so you'll need to restock on nibs more often. But either way, I haven't found scratches to be a problem.

how much does a tablet cost ?
nataliawasilewska97 8 months ago
@nataliawasilewska97 Depending on the brand and model, anywhere from 25 to 2,000usd. :P
Personally I would always suggest buying Wacom tablets, they're the most reliable brand, and if you're relatively new to digital art I'd suggest getting one of their Bamboo tablets, they're as cheap as 70usd. Then later on if you find you really enjoy it you can upgrade to an Intuos or Cintiq, and if you don't like it you haven't lost a ton of money.
Andantonius 8 months ago
There is some lag sometimes between the brush stroke I have on-screen with my Toshiba Tecra and the point where the line actually shows up, ranging from about half a second to two seconds. Is there any drawing lag on the Cintiq or does it depend on the computer it is connected to?
MrShockZero 8 months ago
@MrShockZero It all depends on the computer, there's no real lag from the tablet, but if you use a bigger brush or higher resolution than your computer can handle it might lag a bit behind the pen. Usually when people think the stroke is lagging behind the pen is just because it's not calibrated for their viewpoint, which is easy to fix in the tablet properties.
Andantonius 8 months ago
can i use the wacom on my laptop or just the pc?
overlordprincess 8 months ago
@overlordprincess You can use it on either, but you need to have a power outlet nearby cause the Cintiq is too hefty to get its power just through the usb cable.
Andantonius 8 months ago
@Andantonius thank you. But I'm going to get the Wacom Cintiq 12. It's portable and light.
But thank you I really wanted to know if Wacom works on a laptop.
overlordprincess 8 months ago
@overlordprincess I'm pretty sure the 12 inch model still needs a power outlet to function. I may be wrong, but I'd definitely double check or ask someone who has one before you spend a grand on it and find out it's not as portable as you were expecting.

artisttutorials 9 months ago

PoorMex 10 months ago
@PoorMex Well, upgrading to an Intuos is mainly for the additional expresskeys and more working space on a larger model, which isn't going to make a big difference for inking. A Cintiq is somewhat better because you can see where you're going, but honestly if you're doing a lot of inking I'd recommend trying out sumi ink and a nib pen, like speedball, it would only cost you like 20 bucks to get the supplies and I think it's easier, faster, and looks nicer than inking digitally, even on a Cintiq.
Andantonius 9 months ago
@Andantonius What Graphic Tablets let you see what you are drawing e.g. show the computer screen on there. I'm looking at getting one and I just feel more comfortable being able to see where I'm drawing because it just sounds really complicated having to look at the screen whilst not looking where you are drawing. Thank You.
Vikksi2796 9 months ago
@Vikksi2796 As far as I know the only ones are these, Wacom Cintiqs, either the 12 inch or the 21 inch. The other alternative would be a tablet PC, but I haven't heard great things about them from artists I know who've tried them.
But if you're just starting with digital art, I'd recommend getting a Wacom Bamboo or Intuos, because Cintiqs are really expensive and you don't want to buy one just to find out you don't like digital art. You'll get used to looking at one place and drawing at another.
Andantonius 9 months ago
@Andantonius Ok thank you :) I'll probably get a bamboo

Do all graphics tablets allow you to draw directly on a screen? Or do most have it appear on a separate monitor, like how you use a mouse?
Spartan69139 10 months ago
@Spartan69139
The basic tablets like the Bamboo series need an external screen, your pc screen to work.
This one is an expensive one, because it has it's own screen.
You can get the Bamboo's with pen for 50 euros.
medionbox 10 months ago
@Spartan69139 Basically what Medionbox said, yeah. Most tablets do not have a screen and require a normal monitor to work, like Wacom's Bamboo and Intuos tablets, both of which are more than enough to create high quality digital art. As far as I know the only tablets you'll find with screens are either Cintiqs or Tablet PCs, and Tablet PCs don't have as much control or sensitivity from what I've seen.

Which tablet do you recommend a half beginner? o.o
I've used gimp for around 3 years but not often, just on and off. ._.
Angelal98 11 months ago

Oh, and I'm using Sketchbook Pro now :)
KomicTurtle 11 months ago
can you guys tell me something witch one is good drawing with pencil or drawing with that thing
begzodiscool 11 months ago
@begzodiscool Both. Being able to draw with just a pencil is essential if you plan to be an artist; draftsmanship skills need to be present no matter if you're drawing with pencil, oil paint, or a cintiq. It's important to keep up traditional art practices, every successful digital artist does lots of sketches with pen and pencil at some point, and even goes back to things like oils and acrylics at times. I'd say start with pencil, practice your skills, and get digital tools afterwards.

Which free software I should begin with?
mamatalu 1 year ago
@mamatalu I would suggest trying out either GIMP or OpenCanvas.
GIMP is probably the most popular free software out there for drawing and it seems to work pretty well. OpenCanvas is also pretty popular (mainly for its ability to have group painting sessions) but it was changed to a retail software instead of freeware a while back, so the only free version is 1.1
You could also look in to buying Photoshop Elements or Painter Essentials; both are great painting tools and only cost about $100 each.

paintdataint 1 year ago 12
@paintdataint I haven't really done much printing, but I assume it's like any other monitor; If you calibrate it and learn about the printing process, you'll be able to get the kind of results you want with a little practice.

man i would do anything for that, i run out of paper all the time and i've been thinking of gettting a drawing tablet, thing is i thought All tablets had a screen you can see on lol 2k for one of these..my god its seems like it would be annoying having to look at the computer while drawing somewhere else, is it hard first using one without a screen
MIKEHUNT7531 1 year ago
@MIKEHUNT7531 It's certainly convenient to have the screen, but you don't really need one, especially if you're getting started. It's a little awkward to use a standard tablet and draw on the tablet while looking at the screen, but you get used to it pretty fast and it's much smarter to start out with a Bamboo or an Intuos, then upgrade to a Cintiq if you like them and decide to stick with it.

Andantonius 1 year ago
Aww man I really need this. How long did it take you to get it?
exxod255 1 year ago
@exxod255 It took me about a year, but that doesn't really matter; it's up to you to decide how hard you would want to work or how much you would want to save to be able to get one. :)
And of course always remember that it's just a tool; pencils and paper are all that you really "need" to make art, and a simple (and inexpensive) bamboo is all you'd "need" to make digital art. Anything beyond those is just a pleasantry.

I thought the drawing was pretty good to be honest. What made you decide on the 21 inch and not the 12?
SnowWolfAlpha 1 year ago
@SnowWolfAlpha Haha, thanks, but I couldn't do much worse if I tried. :P
And I went for the 21 just cause I didn't really need the portability (which I don't think the 12 has much of anyways) and wanted the extra space to work; and I haven't regretted that decision so far. It's nice to have a large amount of screen space to work on, especially since I no longer use dual monitors.

Does this have to be hooked up to the PC all the time or can you use it anywhere and save your psd to the tablet or usb? I'm thinking of getting the 12 because I feel like I can draw better when I'm away from home.
Jinxxed0 1 year ago
@Jinxxed0 It has to be hooked up to a computer to work; it's basically just a monitor with a tablet behind it. But if you have a laptop with the proper inputs, you should be able to use it with that. It also requires a power outlet though (not sure about the 12, but I think it does too), so it's still not terribly portable.
Andantonius 1 year ago
@Andantonius You can pick up an Axiotron Modbook for less than a 21ux - it's basically a macbook pro modded into a portable wacom enabled tablet PC. 15" working area though, of course. Best bet if you want something portable.

Will it help or am I just getting too attracted to this sweet toy?
cheesechick529 1 year ago
@cheesechick529 Hmmm... I don't think it would really be hugely beneficial for photo retouching. It's useful for painting because it's easier and faster to make accurate marks, but I don't think you need to do much of that in photo retouching.
So it'd probably be more fun to work on, but I don't imagine it would make a huge difference in efficiency. You might try visiting an electronic store and see if they have any on display and play around with it for a while.
