Wow...! Have always loved Meditation, from "Thais". Think Nicola performs it beautifully....! The Belfast audience seemed spell bound. as was I...! Loved it...!!!
Pat Thomas - Swansea : I discovered this beautiful violinist on the BBC News about six months ago and I have never thought anyone could moive me to tears with her expertise and beauty.
This is the "Meditation" from the opera "Thais" by Jules Massenet. Musicians have lifted this interlude from act II and nobody does this better than Scotland's own award-winning Nicola Benedetti here on the steps of Belfast City Hall as a part of the famous British "Proms in the Park". That's a beautiful 1751 Petrus Guarnerius of Venice violin.
She has no problems shifting whatsoever, one can scarcely hear the bow change, her vibrato is lovely and appropriate to the piece, her dynamics are perfection, tasteful use of portemento on a piece where people often use too much--it is most well done!!!
Her playing is well exceeds "competent", she possesses an exquisite vibrato-unlike the hummingbird like that some are developing and I'm not crazy about. She's very relaxed, not a shred of tension in her wrist. I judge her playing on her playing, which is excellent, the fact that she is quite lovely is her added blessing and it is utterly ridiculous that she women must be carry this additional gender burden, that looks somehow factor into their success. She's just good.
um...she is already a professional.... y would ppl say she is amazing if she sucked.....another things, y don't that many ppl like her? SHE F-ING BRILLIANT!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
she really needs to work more on her technical abilities and intonation if she wants to make it as a professional!!! takes hard work to break away from being a student....... also dress more naked!!!
u stop judgin coz probably u urself cant even hold the violin bow.y r u so critical?stop it!this was supposed to be a slow movement,a beautiful movement and not a quick and technical bazaaaaaaar!
This guy saying, that she has problems with shifting and that she is student like... how did you noticed about that? listening to the poor audio quality of youtube... oh please, did you listened to the eastern promises soundtrack? SO SHUT UP
does vannesa mae even play repitoire music? i thought she only played modern arrangements or her own compositions. so how can you compare a classical violinist to a rock violinist?
You had better do some research, and quick. Vanessa Mae does it ALL, and is the best. She is NOT a rock violinist. Benedenetti is not even close to Venessa Mae, ok, better hooters.
you're right, she is not even close to vannesa mae, nicky is simply sheer class, vannesa has to rely on a thumping rock band to mask her playing, karaoke style! it sucks! leave the classical violinists to do their thing, and leave the pop ones to do theirs
I agree that nice looks don't mean great playing, but her playing is quite competent. Perhaps you are right to some extent. Without wanting to be offensive, there is surely a number of violinists at the Leipzig Musikhochschule that possess the same abilities but are not pushed so hard into the public. She is indeed pretty. I am just a listener, a 'consumer', but to my taste, her vibrato is too big and undifferentiated. But then again, this is such a wonderful chocolate-cookie piece of music! ;-)
The fact that you are German wouldn't have anything to do with your comments about the Leipzig Musikhochschule, would it? I detect a hint of jealousy here. You are not anti-Scottish, I presume? Your personal views about her vibrato are, as you say, a matter of taste. I might prefer one violinist's style of playing over another's. It doesn't mean that they aren't both brilliant players.
she's amazing!student like? she's what 19 in this video! she pushes herself!so people are supposed to be ugly? wow u r so screwy. anne sophie mutter is drop dead beautiful and is one of the most elite! benedetti is still young! you can;t actually think that she;s is immediatly going to be like heifetz!
And exactly what qualifies you to pass such a judgement on the quality of her playing? "Student-like" indeed. If professional music critics rave about her abilities, and they do, upon what criteria do you base your opinion? Don't judge on the basis of this one performance. As for her looks, if she didn't have the talent if anything they would go against her with the very people that count - her fellow musicians. And yet they apparently have nothing but admiration for her.
Please go to you tube and enter "Nicola Benedetti - Szymanowski Violin Concerto" and watch the whole performance. She was 16 at the time. THEN tell me that her playing is "student-like" or "weak" if you dare. It was this performance that won her the BBC young Musician of the Year award in 2004. The professional judges' opinion, I can assure you, would not have been influenced in the slightest by her looks.
Ok Who amoung you can play ANY Instrument? She is exqusite ! Ive been Restoring and repairing Violins for 15 yrs and ive met all the great players , trust me She is one of a kind Surpasses Hilary Hahn Etc Ed Man
I think that is cruel, and it sounds to me that you may be jelaous of her talent? It seems that these days classical musicians must have good looks and talent, like Katherine Jenkins, Milica Ilic, Natasha Marsh, but that is not to say that they are not worth their names, in fact, they all have Uni degrees, and Milica writes all her own stuff. Nicola is one of a kind, she is so young and best of luck to her.
She didn't write this you putz. It's the Meditation from Massenet's opera Thaïs. As far as "fantastic classical music," this is a pure-piece-of-schlock interlude from a two-bit opera. I'd like to see her play some Sibelius instead of this symphonic elevator-music.
I wonder if you'd find "listening" to this clip as compelling as you do if she wasn't wearing a low-cut dress. Oh please — do preach to me about the intricacies of listening to classical music he-who-thinks-overplayed-elevator-music-is-"fantastic."
i have known nicola and her famaliy for years worked for her dad geo in kilwinning she was a young girl back the she has a sister that is also very good on violin

The switching problems are plucking or harp notes that simply add to her perfect tempo playing.
