This is the "Meditation" from the opera "Thais" by Jules Massenet. Musicians have lifted this interlude from act II and nobody does this better than Scotland's own award-winning Nicola Benedetti here on the steps of Belfast City Hall as a part of the famous British "Proms in the Park". That's a beautiful 1751 Petrus Guarnerius of Venice violin.

you're right, she is not even close to vannesa mae, nicky is simply sheer class, vannesa has to rely on a thumping rock band to mask her playing, karaoke style! it sucks! leave the classical violinists to do their thing, and leave the pop ones to do theirs

I agree that nice looks don't mean great playing, but her playing is quite competent. Perhaps you are right to some extent. Without wanting to be offensive, there is surely a number of violinists at the Leipzig Musikhochschule that possess the same abilities but are not pushed so hard into the public. She is indeed pretty. I am just a listener, a 'consumer', but to my taste, her vibrato is too big and undifferentiated. But then again, this is such a wonderful chocolate-cookie piece of music! ;-)

The fact that you are German wouldn't have anything to do with your comments about the Leipzig Musikhochschule, would it? I detect a hint of jealousy here. You are not anti-Scottish, I presume? Your personal views about her vibrato are, as you say, a matter of taste. I might prefer one violinist's style of playing over another's. It doesn't mean that they aren't both brilliant players.

And exactly what qualifies you to pass such a judgement on the quality of her playing? "Student-like" indeed. If professional music critics rave about her abilities, and they do, upon what criteria do you base your opinion? Don't judge on the basis of this one performance. As for her looks, if she didn't have the talent if anything they would go against her with the very people that count - her fellow musicians. And yet they apparently have nothing but admiration for her.

Please go to you tube and enter "Nicola Benedetti - Szymanowski Violin Concerto" and watch the whole performance. She was 16 at the time. THEN tell me that her playing is "student-like" or "weak" if you dare. It was this performance that won her the BBC young Musician of the Year award in 2004. The professional judges' opinion, I can assure you, would not have been influenced in the slightest by her looks.

I think that is cruel, and it sounds to me that you may be jelaous of her talent? It seems that these days classical musicians must have good looks and talent, like Katherine Jenkins, Milica Ilic, Natasha Marsh, but that is not to say that they are not worth their names, in fact, they all have Uni degrees, and Milica writes all her own stuff. Nicola is one of a kind, she is so young and best of luck to her.

She didn't write this you putz. It's the Meditation from Massenet's opera Thaïs. As far as "fantastic classical music," this is a pure-piece-of-schlock interlude from a two-bit opera. I'd like to see her play some Sibelius instead of this symphonic elevator-music.
