A legend and underrated footballer. He had an engine the size of a tractor..... A box to box player long before the term was even coined for Ince and Keane...
A very charismatic man always loved his smile and laugh obviously a great player too, and im a hammer. i still hate gerrard though and i wont ever forgive him untill he scored in that bloody final liverpool were my second team.
The last 20 seconds knocks me on my ass .......Dalglish & Hughes have the greatest smiles in football....They loved their professions and lives........
The captain of the greatest liverpool team ever..sorry to all you gerrard fans but this guy will always be the greatest captain we ever had...a true legend
One of my favourites, especially in the sense of the awesome C64-game we used to play all day long, but really, why did they celebrate goals in the old days like in the special olympics?
@hbomb1964 YES YES YES,, his face when he picks up FA cup, I love that boyish enthusiasm he always had, he was so passionate, so dedicated. All incoming players should be made to watch this, then asked if they can be like that, most have to leave.
Brings tears to my eyes........ Liverpool Football Club meant so much to Emlyn Hughes, full of passion & heart he gave everything! You can see how much it meant to him when he scored........ Wish the crap he have playing for us today had the same attitude and desire as him. RIP Emlyn! sadly missed here in Liverpool. x
Bill Shankly said Emlyn had everything as a player. One of Liverpool's true greats, who apart from being the skipper at the start of the glory years, always gave absolutely everything. Great tackler, header of the ball, and scored more than the occasional spectacular goal. He also kept us entertained after he hung up his boots, and was just as much the entertainer off the field as he was on it.
@kimians-well said, mate. A player of immense courage.Gave everything on the park, and a down to earth man off it.-A fantastic captain, who lead by example. The moment when "crazy horse" lifted the european cup above his head and he smiles,is an image that will live long in the memory. gone but never forgotten.Y.N.W.A
Emlyn Hughes said in 1995 that Revie was "Money ruled", but thirteen years later, according to Tommy Smith, he apparently was willing to bribe Arsenal players £50 a man to throw an important match, in 1972.
Gerrard reminds me so much of Hughes. The way he runs with the ball, his change of direction, the way he tackles, even the way he looks. that closing clip of him training at Melwood after Shankley could be Steven Gerrard (perhaps a heavier version of him)
A true legend of football. I had the privilege of meeting Emlyn Hughes, whilst working at Butlins in 1995. Thanks for the memories. I'll never forget the conversations we had of football and life in general. It was a pleasure to cook for him.
I remember him so well because in the 70's the broadcasts from England were the first to have multiple cameras and close-ups of the players. Emlyn Hughes was always totally engaged, watching left and right to organize the defense, running 90+ minutes. Great player. His face so expressive that you could feel the whole drama of the game even as a spectator. Emlyn you are a gigantic legend!
@johnlemmon NO PLAYER, will ever have that "boyish enthusiasm" that Emlyn had, today, all I hear, is FA cup, League Cup, are not important, Emlyn would have wanted to win anything and everyting, if there were a competition, for an empty baked bean can, Emlyn, would go out 100 % to win it, and be as excired at winning that as he would FA Cup, all the teams play for now, is the money of the European cup, very sad, RIP Emlyn
@katchup you got that right lad, i look at these players today and their prices, and think how much a dalglish, keegan, thompson, kennedy, ect billions
I vividly remember Emlyn receiving the cup from Princess Ann. What a genuine guy he was, he just can't believe it, it's in his hands and he's still shaking his head! Awesome player too.
This is my favourite vid on you tube, and in over 40 years a red, my favourite red player, he was not the best, but his boyish enthusiasm, is 2nd to none, emlyn loved to win, he was a like a kid in a candy store.. And in your comment, you surely noticed Emlyn's gusto. Nice comment, RIP Emlyn
through my tears, Emlyn not onl summed up LFC, but football in general, no one ever will match his enthusiasm, today, players play for money. So sad, your comment is on the nose, RIP Emlyn
Well done skosa, great video. One of Emlyn's goals I remember was vs Southampton at Anfield in the early 70's right at the end of the season (featured I think on Match of the Day but too late to make goal of the month or indeed goal of the season), he started the move deep in his own half and finished it in style. If you or anyone can find it it would be great to see it again.
Nice one skosa, Emlyn was a true legend at Liverpool, and he was also fondly thought of at Wolves, lifting up the League Cup in 1980 the only trophy that had eluded him. Glad to say i was there.
I can't stay away from this video, it really captures the spirit and boyish enthusiasm of our Emlyn, I really miss players like this, who were all about the team, and not the money.
one of the best and sadly missed,he just loved playing football, with his smile in the 70's we didn't need floodlights......R I P emlyn......you were good...REAL GOOD!!!!!
I always name emlyn in my all time liverpool eleven and i dont believe there will be a player like him he was pure quality and would be rafas first name on the sheet if he was in this generation great player sadly missed shankley summed it up at the end RIP Emlyn and god bless you.
As a staunch united supporter I cant but admire the industry honesty passion of emyln and footballers of his generation much in contrast to the bloated egos that pass for footballers these days.Fair play may the best team win the league
never thought I'd talk to a manc, but i concur with you, just been watching Best, and i agree with you, those were the days, ronaldo, comes with whining, moaning, groaning, diving, and cheating, never saw that with george
hate mancs, with a passion, but you and i seem to come from same era, i just been watching George, guys then, pure skill, george, emlyn, we all miss them, if ronaldo is worth his worth, what price george these days??? god bless emlyn and george, bobby , alan and ossy, i'd drink with you sir, to the past, to the past
CRAZY HORSE what a legend. Such Passion for his club reminds me soo much of Stevie G. Emlyn is playing football in heaven and using the Pearly Gates as goal posts. YNWA Come on you reds this is our year to win the title. Bring it back where is TRUELY belongs.
NO Modern day era footballer had the passion as the great Emlyn Hughes. He is playing football in heaven and using the Pearly Gates as goal posts. RIP all footballers who have gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN. CRAZY HORSE ia a legend YNWA
Watching this makes you realise how good Emlyn was and how underated also. He did things that Steven Gerrard does now, plus he could play anywhere at the back or across the midfield. PLUS, he played the game with a smile on his face! Fantastic!!
I agree, Gerrard is very similar in his style of play, and I can't pay him a higher compliment than that! He has the same drive and enthusiasm that Hughes had.....both great players and both the heartbeat of their teams. Just imagine how good it would be with them in the same team.....awesome!
The late GREAT Emlyn Hughes LEGEND. Soo much PASSION for his club. Most likely playing footbal now in heaven and using the Pearly Gates as goal posts with our fallen heroes. GOD BLESS THE 96 this season we will do it for those loved ones we have lost. YNWA come on the mighty Reds this season we will bring the title HOME to where it belongs.
Shankley set the foundations Paisley conquered now Rafa let us believe again where this great club belongs. Bring the title home to Anfield to ehere it belongs.
Not just a great player, a brilliant ambassador for football.. but a really decent fuggin nice bloke who made us all laugh on Question of Sport . Great guy. Greatly missed.
