On 1 April 1956 the BND was created from the Gehlen Organization and transferred to the German government. Gehlen remained President until 1968. During the Cold War, as many as 90% of the BND's informants in East Germany were double agents run by the [ Stasi ]

The Gehlen Organization employed 100s of ex-Nazis, among them [ Alois Brunner ] who was responsible for the [ Drancy internment camp ] near Paris, for the death of 140,000 Jews, and is believed to be still alive as of 2007.
