The best thing to do with System Restore is to just turn it off. It's rarely much help in fixing problems, and by default is set to use 12% of hard drive space. That's a lot of disk space that could be used for something else.

@WindowTutorials When you restore it to factory settings, you have only the initial programs. When you use a system restore, you have all the programs that you have downloaded onto your computer before you created the restore point.

I've used system restore a few times right after I got a viruses and it work out for me . System restore made my system feel fresh again. But some experts said the viruses, malware or Trojan horses still hidden in the system.

I run Xp with System Restore turned off. My system runs faster without it, and it's often pretty useless when there is a problem anyway.

Instead, I have backups of files and programs I want to keep and my Xp CD so in the rare event of a real problem I just format and reinstall. That might not be everyone's way of doing things but it works for me.

I recently bought a nenovo pc for 800 buck, and after a year i wanted to reinstall and recovery everything again. But the problem was it kept saying "this computer does not have enough space for temporary files. Windows installation needs at least 448 megabytes (MB) of space on any partiion for temporary files. To install windows, free enough space and restart installation.

i actually use this anytime i get a virus the antivirus cant locate quick enough for my liking. also great for some programs that refuse to uninstall properly, lol, but if its back a bit, remember to back up programs and their save files youve added since adding the prog. youre getting rid of! its saved my pc heaps of times, and my time and sanity along with it!

is it the same hdd? if it is you can send it to a hdd recoverer, but that costs a bit, and you could lose the os, just give one a call and they can discuss the risks, pros and cons. or just cut your losses and start backing up your data to any removable storage , usb, ext. hdd, cd, dvd, there are plenty of options for that. i hope this has helped!

If your restoring your PC because it was corrupted, at least you got a stable windows back. You can then configure your internet separately afterward which is not a big deal.

Its not so bad, all you are missing to restore the accessories in the menu is shorcuts in the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\ folder, thats were the accessories folder would be and in it all the shortcuts. you can copy the shortcuts from another computer or download a tool that recreates the shorcuts for you from here winxptutor. com/download/accrestore.zip
