the hygienist works in his own clinic as the dentist and not undersupervision of the dentist there are independent in their work..how could the dentist supervise the hygienist since his less educated than hygienist in oral health scinces ..so the hygienist in my pint come first as the prevention come first
i am hygienist .. there are such things get me angrey esp. when ppl comare us to the assistant .. i am highly educated and oral health profeesional my role is more important than the dentist himself .. i am preventing oral diseases and and promoting oral health as u know the prevention is better than cure... and i can work .. so ilove dental hygiene and it should come first then the others
most of these hygienists are in school and they don't know what the real world is like , I liked it too when I was in school and first came out , but now I hate it the back problem, neck problem and the weird position that you have to be all day.
I'm a male and this is what I wanna do. Seems like a good stable job that I can work my up in. Hopefully after some years experience keep working while studying to become a Dentist.
I checked the enrollment stats for this course in my region, 95% females. Can't say I'm not happy about that, but I just hope I can focus on my study.
@ampdgmr We had no male in our class (booooo). The only thing I have heard about being a male DH is that you can't be alone with a female patient when she is sedated. Not sure if that is true and I never bothered to find out.
@khoend What the.. seems like a weird rule, but I understand there is weirdos out there so.. fair enough. I'm from Canada though so it may be different.
well howeva in spore oht are not very recognised. i guess its up to us to try as hard as we can to change this perspective. (working for 6mths now in e private sector)
@TheStars201 It's not hard. But if you're not good, your patients will complain. The bad side to this is that you lose all personal freedom when you are with a patient. You can't scratch your nose, you can't check your phone, you can't take time to stretch. I know many hygienists who don't even take bathroom breaks.
I am about to apply for dental hygiene, but I heard they don't get that many hours or they don't get hired as much because they get pay more than a dental assistant. Some assistants can do the same job for less... I think I'll just do dental assistant and use my current college credits to apply for something else..
@amaka38 I have been a Dental Hygienist for 18 years now and I still love it!!! I love going to work after all of these years! You have to work with the right people...and that is Key! If it is your dream...make it your career!!!
Good luck!!! It's a really good carrer to go for, but most of the time dentist do the prophy's and they are too cheap to hire RDH. And and if they hire a hygienist it would probably be once a week or twice a week. oh yeah about a demanding boss yeap it's true! most of the dentist that hire hygienest or RDA's are always so rude and mean they don't care who you are or what you do!.....
im planning on persuing a career as a dental hygienist. is it a good or bad career? Im worried that I might not be able to find a job, yet in the univeristy brochures, they say that the industry is in high demand for these people.
It's all fun and exciting in school, until you're stuck with a demanding boss and constant back/neck/wrist pain. And since there are barely any job openings for RDH available, you're forced to put on your "it could be a lot worse" face and cope with it while your boss does whatever he wants cuz he knows that he can replace you in a heartbeat. Don't mean to be all dreary, but that's the reality of it. They don't appreciate the vigorous curriculum we go through to become dental hygienists.
@graphscale Depends a lot on where you work and how many days you work. The pay is great so many hygienists work too many days and exhaust their bodies. If the dentist respects you and your patients love you, you will be very happy.
