It is just one device, but getting improvements for each new revision ;-)
I call it a hobby and it's really not that hard. You can 'design' the hardware on a weekend. And at this stage of complexity, the code takes much more thought, whereas the hardware needs some money.
the soldering etc cant be so much of a problem i think. but im horrible at programming :O i once tried and my pc failed.... but i can mod codes that are already written (another way of cheating in games :P).
do you design these devices by yourself?

If you've got a basic arduino board and breadboard for the chips, you can do it too.
