  • wow these guys do the katas PERFECT! that is amazing.

  • @dvdmillenium

bueno, yo no sabìa.

  • Also is important that are you practice SPORT KARATE - GYMNASTIC.....or REAL KARATE-DO....? type of KARATE by Luka Valdesi etc.....is nothing to do with KARATE-DO...;-D

  • @5Gorinnosho As a matter of fact, Luka Valdesi does karate-do and is a product of the JKA.

  • Well, befor you'll apply Karate, YOU HAVE TO DEEPLY UNDERSTAND and STUDY!!!!!

  • i love karate :)

  • ive taken shotokan back in high school .. too much hard & fast .. low to the ground BS .. the main points in karate are kata .. everything else is just basics .. well .. i was enlightened when i changed over to .. Aikido .. which is much more than just techniques .. its a complete lifestyle .. everything you do in it .. its applied in life as well .. now try doing a karate kata at your job .. and tell everyone .. your applying this to your work & lifestyle .. just doesnt fit.

  • I have trained in JKA dojos on and off since 1983. It may or may not be "sport karate". I do not care. I train because the overwhelming majority of people I have met are wonderful. "Check your ego at the door!" It is a uniform art available all over the world that anyone can be comfortable with. "The ultimate aim of Karate is the perfection of the character of its participants" Humility, respecting others, and refraining from violent behavior have kept me out of more conflict than any techniques.

  • @alkcoholic "The ultimate aim of Karate is the perfection of the character of its participants" Tell that to an Okinawan fisherman who was being abused by a samurai.

  • @IEKUKATAKA hahahah! The guy says, "Kata must be continuous and flowing!". Then the Renshi goes, "Ichi..Ni...San...Shi!". ROFLMAO!

  • These guys are the best!

  • MACHIDA

  • thanks very useful!!!

I can clearly see all the positions

  • I have noticed that morote uke is started with the supporting arm already in position with the fist of the blocking arm on the inside of the supporting arm's elbow. I have learnt to start with the cup and saucer starting position as in uraken uchi when kicking yoko geri keage. Have i been learning the wrong technique or are there differences within Shotokan schools? Thanks.

  • THIS IS NOT KARATE! A warning from a JKA life member: I spent a long time training and teaching this activity. Because of many contradictions I saw and heard, I began a study of karate from it’s beginning; what it really is, why it was developed, how it was taught, what it’s general syllabus was. The JKA is a shell, they have eliminated much of original karate and have invalidated it as a martial art. Read comments my site, the truth is obvious through study if you are willing to see it.

  • @IEKUKATAKA - what's your website ? Am willing to study.

  • @Juluka69 Go to my account site and send me a personal message indicating what it is that you want to accomplish. i will help as I can.

  • @IEKUKATAKA come on, I understand you might disagree with some (or many) of the things that are being taught by the JKA and its spin-offs. But to say this isn't karate is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

  • @deadguy29 No I don't think. If you will read of the Meiji Restoration, the truce of WWII with Japan, the history of Okinawan karate jutsu and the REAL meaning of Budo, you will see the same. Believe what you like, it is up to you. Just remember, a lie believed by millions is still just a lie.

  • @IEKUKATAKA Your interests from your profile: 'Traditional, ancient Karate and Okinawa Kobudo, shooting firearms, protecting the American constitution by speaking out against the destructive effects of liberalism and the deluded rhetoric and mind set of liberals in general.' ? Really?

  • @IEKUKATAKA 'Liberalism (from the Latin liberalis, "of freedom") is the belief in the importance of individual liberty and equal rights'. And I was under the delusion that the American Constitution was based on this belief!? Will you be using your firearms or traditional karate to stifle the destructive effects of liberalism and the deluded rhetoric and mind set of liberals in general?

  • @muchosmuertos The liberalism I am speaking of is the American ultra-left liberal who has no moral bounds, believes in socialism and wants everyone else to pay for it and to live according how they dictate. And, yes, if it came down to that level of struggle, I would oppose it violently because it is destructive and, in fact, may have already caused irreparable damage to America. It also flies in the face of common sense and the basic intelligence required to function.

  • @IEKUKATAKA because you say so all JKA-related karateka are living a lie? or is it that all karateka, from any style, are living a lie? It's sounds like you're trying to indoctrinate and are not willing to make any compromises, so I'll just leave it there.

  • @deadguy29 It is clear what I am saying. You can believe of disbelieve anything you like. Keep in mind, I have been there (JKA) and have been involved in the study of Okinawan karate for quite a long time and there is no comparison. When you get deep into the cultural reasons it becomes even easier to see how and why it happened. Most won't go that deeply and I did so I am warning the public. Don't like it? Ignore it, it is your future.

  • @IEKUKATAKA so you spent many years in the JKA and suddenly your eyes opened and you realized everything you'd learned was BS? I don't care about cultural reasons, what I've seen through all these years is people saying what karate should be and what karate shouldn't be, and in the end they were all full of shit. I like what I've learned from karate, I like my basic understanding of what karate should be, and I've been involved in contact sports for quite a while...

  • @IEKUKATAKA you keep with your ground-breaking discoveries and with your be-all, end-all knowledge of karate. Most of all common people will do our thing, day to day, training and sweating our asses off instead of reading books and doing arm-chair coaching...

  • @deadguy29 In the dojo sweating my ass off 6 years before you were born, sonny. Still at it and have had my eyes open the entire time. You can make smart remarks all you like but it will not change the fact that the JKA is a sorry representation of karate. Karate is already defined, it was defined on Okinawa for centuries and the JKA and it's lineages do not fit the model. Believe what you like, you will be the beneficiary of it in the end whether positive or negative.

  • By the way i think that Kagawa sensei is, nowadays, the greatest karateka on earth

  • Hehe when i was younger and was a beginner in karate i had lots of arguments with a friend of mine because we both said that the other did katas wrong, a few months later we asked our senseis and reliced that i was in shotokan and he was in shorin ryu, and both of us were right

  • It's always interesting to see the slight variations from dojo to dojo.

  • Even though I disagree with the haters here, I have to LOL when the narrator goes, "Please pay attention to the continuity of the kata.". Then the instructor goes, "Ichi, Ni, San, Shi ..."? That's called continuity? ROFLMAO!

  • The other thing that's funny is when ppl talk this McDojo shit! How many of you ever had to operate a dojo and keep the lights on? The last picture I had of my Shihan was of him and his students standing in front of his newly opened dojo! I have to admit they were mostly kids. About 45 students altogether, I said to myself, "If he charged $50 a head he's only rake in $2,250 a month"! Once he paid the bills, the City, State and Federal taxes it's all gone!

  • What garbage..Sorry but...there is no understanding of the ..."why"......

  • @JDM867

No they don't........Almost every Shotokan instructor has NO idea about real self-defence....Sorry to smash your illusions.......

  • @becs5120

I think you, becs5120, is one of those fellows who tried to learn karate and failed... No offense, but you really sound that low, just listen to your self...

That way you get to see what I teach and then you can see if you agree or, disagree with my concepts and I get a holiday in one of the most beautiful places on Earth....Oh I will pay....and your students can train for free.

  • @becs5120

Would love that.... by the way, i'm a karate student... and i dont have students, but a sensei. thanks a lot. give me a time... i wanna take leave from work to welcome you and to hang around....

  • @JDM867 , before i dont understand why my sensie always do basic every time we have a training now i understand. because in the basic i all the technique in mkumite and also inkata are there. in basic my sensie told me that thius mis the foundation of veryu important in karate practitioner. SPEED,POWER AND FORM.

now i'm amaze of what i can do. thanks shotokan..

Kiai

  • impressive how much karate has evolved int the past 20 years

  • it´s better for to develop the Karate abilities, including the spirit force, discipline and honesty, from karate master, Gishin Funakoshi, he was an excelent founder of this sport for to expand to Occident.

  • It's as simple as this: if you're doing these katas any differently than what it's shown here, you're most likely doing them the wrong way. All of you clowns trying to look like "experts" by making corrections to these performances are only making fools of yourselves.

  • i study jka shotokan karate and its the best style out there!!! i studied isshinryu and it doesnt come even close to jka shotokan!!! people need to train in it first to understand it then they should make a opinion then. karate is soft and hard we are like water we can flow through softly or hard when need be

  • @gemelas328 I agree with you. Shotokan is awesome. JKA Shotokan turns a lot of people off because they don't see quick results. The can't take a few classes, and than go into a cage and draw some blood. It takes time. But, if a guy puts his time in and trains hard, he will come out a very smart fighter who doesn't just stand there and trade punches. It really isn't meant for the ring, and its tough to adapt to the ring, but for self defense, its totally effective, and brutal.

  • @njtr

    I am sorry....but, you won't......

You can spend years...........and years doing Shotokan and do you know what..... you all get told......"train harder.......then you will understand"

So.....what good is that......for someone who wants to learn self defence.....assuming that actual premise has anything factual about it...!!

  • becs5120 I've used Shotokan karate in real fights, against people who were trying to hurt me. It was incredibly effective, and actually EASY to defeat my opponents. I had to hold back so that I wouldn't hurt my attackers. I couldn't use the most brutal Shotokan attacks, or I would've been doing hard time. I will qualify this by saying that I've been training for several years. You've got to understand that there's a difference between dojo style and street style. Dojo stances hard. Street easy.

  • @njtr Great story, but I have to correct you in one little detail. When some guy attacks you with mal intent on the street, he is not your opponent. LOL! He is your ENEMY and should be dealt with as such. Osu!

  • @osensei2987 Good point. An ENEMY is different from a sparring partner, or an opponent in a karate match. I'll add, the important thing to remember in an ENEMY situation is to not think about dojo form. Just react, and whatever comes out, comes out. Your dojo training is engrained, and movements will be automatic, albeit not perfect in form. In a fight, trying to have perfect form will get you killed, but DOJO training and kata with PERFECT form is essential for muscle memory development. OSU

  • Classic shit!!! I remember doin these when I was a kid under GM Ki Whang Kim.

  • I'm a Muay Thai guy, and it even annoys me that Karate doesn't get enough credit. Hell, I want to take it just so I can learn these Katas. They seem like awesome building blocks for any athletic base. Shotokan Karate is serious, I give it all the respect in the world.

Machida, a well-rounded CHAMPION fighter, uses Shotokan exclusively in his stand-up. All his other martial arts training comes second. It's a deadly-effective martial art, and my hat's off to those of you who practice it.

  • This was brilliant. Such great technique. Did anyone find some of his spirit yells a little...spiritless? I wish I was this good.

  • Some people are willing to see others at death's door to further their own end. You speak no such thing about the nature of defense in Karate, or of good works in general.

  • @Mr335432 Why? Its from JKA faction of Shotokan. Look into its history. If you need further validation, pick up Harry Cook's Shotokan: A Precise History.

  • To anyone on here trying to sit and correct subtle nuances in the form, I have one thing to say to you. Imagine getting hit by any one of these strikes. Talk all the shit you want, but that would hurt, and you would be lying if you said otherwise. I train in Hung Gar, but I can recognize power in other styles when I see it. And quit with the MMA bs. A good fighter can adapt to any opponent. The low blocks here can be adapted to arm bars on the ground, for example, if one trains smart.

  • @marius9 all i imagine is how sore he feels afterwards, he needs to take it easy he could pull something.

  • Perfect. I can't believe some people criticize such karatekas. Post your own Heian katas so that we canbe illuminated.

  • perfeito

  • OMG i hate it when dip shit people that have neither learn a bit of karate or aren't anywhere near 3rd dan correct masters. people get on here and try to correct how their legs are are good enough, or they miss a kiai. STFU people really, who the hell died and made you a master, oh that's right, none of you are anywhere near 6th dan.

  • yeah no one should criticize this kind of speed and power..it's real good...

  • perfect

  • he definetly has good upper body but i cant really see him using all of his lower body and stances to strengthen his technique

  • His upper body strength and razor sharp techniques are the result of his strong lower body stances....watch his other katas . shotokan is a style based on strong lower body stances to generate penetrating kicks and strikes

  • Knives10 - Have you ever heard the saying "he makes it look easy"? You can't see the effort of his legs because he is doing it so well that his technique has become very, very subtle. What we think is power in other's (and our own) technique is often just the wasted, excess motion. Osaka has drilled that waste and excess out of his technique.

  • Osaka is superb.

  • just started learning karta after watching i think il be still learning in the nersing home verry impresive unbeliveable power

  • I took Shoto-kan when I was a kid and kept up with some of the katas. The video helped me remember the one's that I had forgotten.

  • Great to show to the startes hhow was the karate no too long ago. That's living history. Thanks to share this with all of us

  • my favorite part of katas is the KIAI ! AYSO!

  • thanks so much for this

  • Muito bommmmmmmmmmm

  • i enjoyed watching this and i saw something to me that looked like loss of connection in some parts but these guys know my sinsi so I KNOW NOTHING LOL

  • ya, its like that sometimes isnt it

  • ????? Loss of connection? With all due respect, hotlilscaterboy, have suffered of loss of your mind? I've been practicing Shotokan since 1978, and watching this video now,at San Dan and at 49 yrs of age (31 of wich I've dedicated to Shotokan) I realized that I have a looooong way to go to improve my Heian Katas :( These masters' performance is just AMAZING ! ! ! ! !

  • I have to agree. I thought the video was excellent. Only saw one missed kiai. Other than that, I wish I were as good as they.

  • é vdd juuuuniiiinhooo!!! O martelo q ele deu ta errado!!!kkkkkkkk

  • o 1 n deu o martelo certo ke noob --''

  • am going in 2 do mi second black belt

  • Shotokan is the best karate

  • indeed

  • I have to agree. What rank are you?

  • Hola .. amo SHOTOKAN KATARE....

  • I'm 12, I've been doing karate for 9 years, I'm a 2nd degree Black Belt, (Ni-dan) so I know what I'm talking about when I tell you SHITheads to actually WATCH some Shotokan karate before you start dissing it, and making people laugh at you. Morons!!!

  • since you were three thats impressive i am second dan too however im 17 but i would totally agree with this i would say don't dis something u know nothing of...

  • isn't that tikioko nidan? the first kata

  • WOW !

That's the best resource of Heian Katas !

  • what the name of that kata?

  • Heian sodan, Nidan, sandan,.....

  • there is one thing i notice that my karate teacher told us

that when doin a knife hand block downward block that the inside palm must almost touch your ear

  • the problem with shotokan is gichen took old school Te and turned it into a physical exercise for high school kids.

which meant-he left out all of the bunkai, alot of open hand strikes, and from his fight with Motobu,he didnt practice throws either.

but his student ozaki "spelling" is an excellent master in California.

and who can deny that Kanazawa is a true warrior.

if you notice most traditional kata, fight as if they were in ancient battlefields.

All Oyama did was update it.

  • and, I should train in the United States WHY?

  • Yes "as they please". Im not saying they dont use color belts today because I know just about all do in todays era. But I mean looooooong time ago Black and White belt were mainly the only belts.

  • you are right about that. As I told you in traditional Shotokan Ryu Karate Do we only have three colors. White, Brown and Black.

  • The perfomance of the Heian Katas in this video are perfect I just dream of peroform those katas as good as this Sensei. Osu!

  • No good!

  • Fuck you acerwk! Bloody idiot; what is not good you prick?

  • Hahahaha! What a stupid fuck! Shotokan a Gay art??? Lear to express your self in english before trying saying anything you greek fuckhole! So what the hell you know about karate that you think is gay? What martial art do you practice? Or you have only a big fucking mouth the size of your ass?

  • Ok, Ok! That is because Shotokan it's a very traditional karate it is not a hardcore kind of Karate. Anyways I do respect all styles and all martial arts. I do not hate an specific Style of Karate. Why do you hate Shotokan? Each one has it's own style. I also like kyokushin and Shito Ryu for example.

  • Well; yeah maybe you are right on that. But it is just the way the style is. Following the tradition and the teachings of Master Funakoshi. Each schools follows and respects the fundamental teachings of the master. I recognize for example that Kyokushin would be more efective in a fight and yes nobody attacks you in real life with Oi Tsuki. But it;s just the way the art is.

  • Have you ever trained in Shotokan, and if so how long? Have you ever seen Lyoto Machida fight in MMA? He is using Shotokan techniques. His stance, his movement, his straight reverse punch--- all Shotokan. Do you doubt he can defend himself? By the way, which martial art do you train in to save your life?

  • Machida is BJJ black belt so he know how to defend against take downs etc.If you stay only in shotokan syllabus then you dont know what to do against attacks like that

  • @acerwk : dude, u obviously lack finesse when it comes to martial art. u are ignorant. machida's bjj alone cannot make him effective in combat whether in the octagon or in the street. before u start commenting negatively as if ur a master of any martial art, why don't u try train in a martial art. karatekas, martial artist in general doesn't talk trash because trash talking is a manifestation of ur patheric crude nature. train in martial arts so u'll learn and understand why u should shut up.

  • hey. i like tha conversation u guys are havin'. i just want to say karate is about interpretin' ones self through combative, powerful, disiplined strkes, throws(well to me it is). Certain techiques may or may not work in real life-maybe! When undastandin Karate it has to 1st be undastood as not only a way of self defense, but a MARTIAL ART. Art is ment to be expression: through ur fist, legs etc. juss as an artist has different media like paintin, pencil. Techniques dont fail tha student does.

  • The other styles of karate are for self defense Shotokan is for nothing more than a sport.the moves shotokan has cant use in a real fight

  • 15 fights Machida won 2 using tech. found in BJJ. The rest he was using Shotokan. Where do you think his elusiveness comes from? Shotokan is lacking in grappling Off/Def, sort of. But to think BJJ without MMA is effective is also foolish. The majority of BJJ tech. not taken directly from Judo are flowery techniques and will only work in sport competitions. Shotokan will be a primary focus to any of Machidas challengers, so when hes beaten they only won because they knew Shotokan?

  • His using the Bjj in every fight because he knows how the opponent will move against him.shotokan doesnt have drills and doestn train you against takedowns etc.this is how he is using his grappling knowledge

  • He is using more Shotokan then BJJ. Besides that, MMA is way bigger then BJJ now anyways and all competitors who make it anywhere know more then grappling. Its a must. The only reason BJJ was ever able to defeat other styles so easily was because the Gracies were more aware of the opponents tech. then their competition was. Now that people are aware of their tricks most fights are won with standup even when they do end on the ground. Sure Grappling is essential but so is striking.

  • Anybody who hopes to beat Machida will need to be well versed in Shotokan. There is a very old saying from the Go Rin No Sho which states "know your enemy". The Gracies were masters at it and so is Machida. Take away Lyotos Karate and what do you got??? A nobody, because he only knows crappling. Add MT and you got just another MMA fighter. However MMA with a Shotokan base, and you get a monsster that most guys cant touch thanks to the elusiveness he learned through Shotokan.

  • shotokan is shit ..period

  • How come nobody can beat Machida??? He's not a world class grappler competing in Abudabi. Nor is he a Champion boxer or MuayTai champ. He is however a world class Shotokan Karateka, and the current LHW champion of the world...Period

  • if he was stay in shotokan crap that deosnt teach you what to do against grapplers/thai fgihters etc he was a looser!period

  • so he learn Bjj,he is black belt, and now he knows how to defend against them.thats why he is the champion

  • You're a tool... ask Machida himself what he uses to defeat his opponents, and he says KARATE, plain and simple, nothing more, nothing less. He trains his KARATE against grapplers, KARATE is FULL of grappling holds, which can all be applied standing AND on the ground, its as simple as that buddy.. go train and learn for yourself.

  • he says ''Machida Karate''to promote his father school man!so simple

  • @kirokyukan

Actually he is a world class Bjj practitioner. Shotokan is great and effective but not by itself. Combining it with judo, wrestling or Bjj is ideal. Most older japamese kratekas practiced judo with their karate.

  • @Hossetheboss1000 Hi. I disagree that Shotokan is not effective by itself. I started with Shotokan (non-JKA at first), then later Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu, Kyokushin, now BJJ. When I was in high school, I only knew Shotokan and reached ikkyu and it served me well two times then. It later came to use in college just once. I continued practicing later in life under JKA (w/ Mori sensei, NY) before trying the others. Never had to use any style Karate since. I train in BJJ to compliment my striking.

  • @Hossetheboss1000 Cont'ng my point, I understand the shortcomings of Shotokan when compared to other MMA styles. Its effectiveness depends on who you are facing. It wasn't meant for MMA or UFC, but regular thugs who have little training on the street. As I said, it worked well for me when I was harassed both in high school and college before I took the other arts. But I know, I wasn't facing any trained MMA or UFC fighters and probably would of lost. Shotokan is effective for its real purpose.

  • woh woh, slow down buddy, shotokan DOESNT have takedown defense? excuse me? shotokan doesnt have drills? lmao... Funny shit, how about you goto a shotokan dojo and train for a few years yourself before acting like you KNOW what shotokan is. The best thing about karate, is the adaptability of kata and in turn, a good martial artist realizes kata applied to combat is MORE than a grappling specialist could ever hope to know, karate has more takedown defense and grappling than you think.

  • Thank you for saying that. People think that the old school techniques are outdated but that's straight up retarded. The most basic techniques will NEVER EVER lose their adaptability and devastating power. WAKE UP PEOPLE.

  • :) .. thanks for being able to tell what I was actually trying to say, lol... Yea, most people just don't realize the point when it comes to karate and kihon in general.

  • @stormriser83 More idiots talking shit? Everywhere you look there's some idiot going MMA this and BJJ that! And Karate isn't this and Aikido is fake and the BS just goes on! Very few of these dumb asses ever drove past a dojo in a car, let alone studied in one. It's funny really, to think that so many ppl have become experts by merely watching the UFC on TV! ROFLMAO!

  • @stormriser83

hello from spain! ive been practicing karate for a log long time, in the shito ryu stile.

and i have to say that i agree with you, they are doing the katas too fast, karate is not only speed and strenght. the people who believe that this people are awesome doing the katas, are totally mistaken.

This is inly my opinion, sorry for my bad english

  • @ultrapacomanolo Well, I'm the one who's sorry for you. Since you don't know these katas, so how can you say these people are doing them too fast? you're just writing out of your ass to look like an expert when in all fairness you're just coming across as an idiot...sorry again.

  • @deadguy29 Look friend, i've been practising the shito ryu stile for 20 years and i have a lot of partners that are masters of shoto-kan style. i've only said my opinion, and i'm not insulting the people like you, please learn some education.

  • @ultrapacomanolo well, if you do know guys who are shotokan "masters", ask them if they know who the guys in this video are...(hint: JKA kata champion, appears on Nakayama's Best Karate books, etc etc) In any case, and I'm really trying to be polite to you, kata have different interpretations and while the JKA is not the only Shotokan group outthere, these are widely considered the standard for kata performance, at least for anyone who tries to follow Nakayama's way of training karate.

  • @deadguy29 youre right about the fact that katas have different interpretations, i'm sorry if i've offended you.

  • @ultrapacomanolo I'll take it down a notch since you're being polite. Sorry if I was too blunt and harsh with my comments...but, going back to the video, these guys are shotokan top practitioners, my opinion is that each kata has its own pace and rythm, but the fast, strong parts are meant to be performed that way. As long as you're keeping good form and not rushing through the movements with half-assed punches and kicks, you can do them as hard and fast as you can.
