Does anyone know how I can get in contact with the Powhatan Renape Nation members? Looking to have a small ceremony at our home (we're local) and trying to find out if they provide such services. tina.valeri@gmail.com
Pocahontas wasn't even her given name. It was just a childhood nickname. Her real name was Matoaka, but later she also was known by Amonute. As for rottlerz translation of Pocahontas, I smell BS. By all accounts, Pocahontas was a favorite child of her father, Wahunsunacawh. What loving father would nickname his daughter "spirit from the abyss"? William Strachey, who knew Pocahontas, said the nickname meant "little wanton one" .
Great family you have. But the video descrition is wrong. Pocahontas is really to wrds combinded into one. And sence pocahontas is an Indian it's safe to say her name should be translatd in indian. In Indian "Poca" means - spirit and " Hontas" mens abyss. Spirit abyss. When you utter " Pocahontas you are calling on a sprit from the abyss (The devil).
@NeaNea1060 ...I'm Powhatan also...You might in fact be a cousin of mine. I worked at the reservation for years. I'm related to the HAWKINS, PARKERS, CARNEY'S from Delair, NJ. Where are you from?
@Spyder8561 sorry it took me so long to respond i am NeaNea1060 i lost my password to that account. Anyway yeah were definatly family, i am related to all of them. I grew up in Delair and my grandma, aunts, and most of my moms family is still there. I moved like a town over
@MsDCjohns That's what's up. It's a small world! Now that the nation is closing down It might be hard to meet new family members :( I pretty sure that my grandmother (Ida Parker- Ida Hawkins) is probably cousins with your grandmother...or something like that. You're very pretty, you look just like the rest of my cousins...runs in the family lol. C.U
@MsDCjohns Ryan is my little cousin, his mom and my dad are brother and sister. Joanne is my aunt also, she has a son name Chris. Ask them about Craig :)
They are not saying anything. It's all vocables. Many songs have the chorus in English, or a mix of language and English, or just language, but this song only has vocables. With European contact, many of the tribal languages were wiped out. So for the drum groups that want to have songs, they focus more on the tune, and the drum timing and the feeling in the song, Then the vocables are placed. To keep it together, the vocables are memorized by the whole drum.
Thank You for that information, My farther is 1/2 micmac Indian from Nova Scotia, by his father, he was raised by his white mother in P.E.I, We also went to this festival a few years back when the MicMacs were there from NS
