The Fixx was like a generation or two ahead of their time. Great, deep, rich, interesting music. Innovative. I loved them in the 80s and still do today. They were like Orson Wells, too sophisticated for the general public. Only the really innovative and talented though stand the test of time. They will endure long after mediocre groups from the 80s are long forgotten.
The songs by many of the new artists on the radio and TV aren't worth listening to.The Fixx,Doobie Brothers.the Motown and Stax sound and many great classic songs from the 1990s and earlier are the best.I tried listening to Lady Gaga and my response is ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Fixx didnt hit it really big simply because of bonehead labels constantly not getting what they were all about. Happens less today because bands market themselves but the Fixx were completely dependent on the almighty label back then. Its a travesty that phantoms and walkabout are out of print. can u believe that?? its b.s.
even though I really got into metal this was one of my favorite tapes that I listened to all the time...I still remmeber all these lyrics 28 yrs later
I couldn't agree more about this band. I saw them open for 'Flock of Seagulls' and 'Moody Blues' back in the day. Could not for the life of me understand why they didn't blow the roof off the music industry...they were so damn good. One of the great mysteries. That may explain why the industry is so pathetic today.
just a shame they didn't receive more acclaim than they did. Incredibly tight band with an excellent vocalist!!! Truly one of the best alternative bands to ever come along
lov lov lov this freakin band... remember back when this album came out and everybody was into ozzy and motley crue and all that crap fuckin quiet riot,,, thank god for bands like the fixx, inxs, the cure, joy division ect...
I agree that music in the 80's was better. Everything is just conveyer belt music (as was said before) these days, and country is the only thing that hasn't gone down the crapper. And I mean *real* country like Garth Brooks, Johny Cash, Reba McEntire, Willie Nelson, etc. Granted half those people are either dead or haven't made an album in a long time, but still.
Most music today is mass produced garbage compared to 80s music...more craft and skill went into the 80s...Today's so called music is conveyor belt music...the same crap coming through day after day..
@vinto34 Well...don't know about that. There is always plenty of mass produced crap. For every "The Fixx", there are literally hundreds of Johhny Hates Jazz and Swing Out Sister. Today, Elbow are quite superb, but does that make Lady Ga Ga any less shite? Nope...
Didn't realize in the 80's how great this music was. Has staying power, still sounding new and fresh. Never get tired of pure musical genius. This music moves me. it stirs my soul.
An incredible song by an incredible band. If the 80's brought us some intellegent and well written music, here it is. Most music today is brain dead crap compared to this.
This was one of my first albums and I immediately loved every song. Truly a great piece of work by the Fixx. Phantoms was also very good, but this one felt more solid. I still have the original LP. I felt that after Rupert Hine stopped producing them their sound change to a style that I didn't find to be them. Although, someof their latest stuff is sounding somewhat like they did back then. They're still a terrific group nonetheless.
The album Reach the Beach was an under-rated, under-noticed brilliant piece of musical art. There is nothing else out there like it, '80's or not.. This album is a snapshot of brilliance. But it if you can still find it.
The reason the Fixx didn't have more success than they did was because their music was way too cerebral and intelligent for the general public which is why their most dancable and commercial sounding track (though i love it)) One thing Leads To Another was their biggest. There just aren't many people willing to listen to great lyrics. Never have been. I'm lucky enough to know awesome from crap though and this my friends....
Back in the 80s playing a song like this for a typical radio fan, was like trying to sell a Chicken Soup for the Soul reader on the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. When I bought my copy of RTB and saw how great it was, I felt like I'd found treasure from a library instead of a vinyl LP from the local Walmart.
I'll kill anyone that says that they don't like this. Just kidding. This is one of the my all-time favorite songs. I listen to it almost every day during my workouts on my mp3 player. What brilliance!!!
This was a fantastic album from start to finish...and it was way better than "The Unforgetable Fire". Now if I can just get one of yuse guys...to upload "Running"...off of this same album...my life would then be complete. I need to get my Fixx. Thanks
check this out .. i met the whole band on calm animals tour, back like 200 years ago i guess.. cy was surrounded my people telling him how cool his lyrics were.. jamie was really cool but he seemed kinda burned out or something.... too many shows in a row maybe... i never got to meet rupert, who imo is the most creative keyboard player ever. he doenst shred but NO ONE plays like him.
The Fixx really stood out from the rest of the 80's pack. Like one commenter mentioned, they might have been TOO good to get the chart success of some of their peers. Perhaps the music or lyrics were too complex for the mainstream. Bands like Rush, Saga, King Crimson are in the same camp.
One of my favorite songs ever. I have to make a download. I still have the cassette from the 80`s. It`s probably on of my oldest posessions. It` so worn it`s now labeled in sharpie. The Fixx is one of my favorite bands of all-time.
great album by the Fixx, Sy Cernan/s vocals absolutely awesome, band had a very tight sound, very underrated band, one of the first alternative bands.........
Does anyone know that Liner is about thr conflict between Britain and Argentina over the Falklands? I found that out from Cy. I met him many years ago and still have a signed pix of him. Been a Fixture for many years.
@aligaetor1 cool, never knew that about Liner, i was lucky enough to meet Geddy Lee about 10 years ago, got signed pic from him, a great guy and great talent
I was into The Fix in the 80s, it brings back memories of class parties, rooms full of nursing and dental hygeine students (the hottest of all). My buddy and I have just knocked a six pack of St. Pauli Girl Dark out while driving around talking about chicks, the latest technology etc etc...........The Fixx plays in the background as I enter the room transfixed by the rhythmic sway of nubile babes. Whew, if only to go back for a little while.
I agree this album was probably my all time most played growing up. These guys were awesome. I love the Cure also but these guys were so underated. this album was pure genius.
Wow...a group that stuck to there musical style regardless of the era. Love these guys. I'll have to do a guitar music tribute to 'em. Simple, but great writing musically and musically.

I think they were too good and lyrically over achieving for the 80's.
Somewhat reminiscent of Devo as their music still sounds fresh today.
