  • Yes, tanning beds use UVB, but all FDA approved tanning lamps have way more UVA than UVB. Yes, you can burn in a tanning bed, but you have the ability (& responsibility) to tan for the amount of time that fits your skin type and previous exposure times. If used correctly, indoor tanning protects you from skin cancer by giving your skin a tan (it's natural protection from sunburn). Sunburn puts you at risk for skin cancer! Minimize those risks (& risks of other diseases) with a tan.

  • why are people so obsessed with being tan anyways?

  • u are uneducated as far as uv exposure - uv is how vit D is produced - only natural way !! Vit D is huge against breat cancer prevention, bone density loss and 102 other diseases !! yup - get dont a wrinkle, but die of cancer !! go get a cheeseburger or fish and chips ... see where takes ya!!

  • I work at a tanning salon, and to be honest, yes tanning beds are dangerous. Yes, they can cause skin cancer if you overexpose yourself to the uv rays. But you can also get cancer from outdoor tanning, once again, if you overexpose yourself.

One thing to keep in mind is that tanning beds emit 3x more radiation than the sun's rays.. this makes them a little more dangerous, and this is why you need to watch how long and often you go tanning for.

  • @newportismylife

Tanning beds are only dangerous if used incorrectly. If you work in a salon, you have the responsibility to ensure that they are used correctly. Please don't give all salons a bad name, because some do not educate & use the beds correctly.

  • @newportismylife

Tanning beds are not dangerous. It is the people that use them irresponsibly that give them a bad name.

Tanning beds have a timer & a use schedule for a reason. Do not use them for longer or more often than the schedule suggests. If you want to be tan overnight, get a spray tan! If you want to tan responsibly follow the recommended schedule. I don't ever go the full time in a tanning bed, even though the schedule says my skin type can build up to the full time pretty quickly.

  • If anything has been proven its that overexposure can cause skin cancer. Not specifically just tanning. That can happen indoor and outdoors. Yet in moderation it can be healthy and can improve your appearance if you look pasty. No one cn deny that soe people look better with alittle color but nobody looks good burned. And burning is not healthy. SO DONT BURN! INDOOR OR OUT!

  • Simply tanning won't give you cancer. Overexposure and burning of the skin will damage it. Like everyhing else, Use in moderation. So please don't mislead people that will believe everything they hear.

  • @MrEddie0228

    Thank you!

We need to ecucate the public about the benefits of moderate tanning

  • This is what I dont like about information like this about tanning salons and outdoor tanning. They say indoor tanning causes skin cancer. Now is it Indoor tanning or is it overexposure? Because all they say is indoor tanning. So please be more specific and give the right information

  • tanning is the stupidest thing any white person can do. Just embrace your natural skin color. Is looking like an orange coloured faggot worth dying over?

  • Can I just use regular sun block in a tanning bed to protec my skin??????

  • it depends on which solarium you go to. most solariums will not allow you to use sunblock as it can damage the acrlyic on the beds. if you are going to use prtection for your skin i would recomend using designer skin as they are made by a pharmasist and have a good moisturiser in them and will help protect the skin. and after each session use a good moisturiser which will help lock the colour into your skin and keep the skin fresh for you

  • tanning beds are terrible

seriously, you might feel like your the only person without a tan before the summer

but in 20 years, you'll be the only one WITHOUT wrinkels, and you wont have cancer.

  • @italianhoe92

ok to be the only one w/o a tan, but don't go out in the sun or you will be the only one with a burn (which means you will be the 1 at risk for skin cancer, not the ones who protected their skin by tanning in moderation in a controlled environment)!

  • @italianhoe92

It is irresponsible to say if you never tan you won't get skin cancer. One may get skin cancer for many different reasons (high on list are lotions with parabens & chemical sunscreens).

More & more studies are proving that tanning IN MODERATION actually protects you from skin cancer. In addition to giving you the only NATURAL protection from sunburn, it stimulates many natural anti-cancer effects within the skin & body. I can give links to this info if anyone is interested.

  • That would be a big no no to tan ontop of a sunburn....I worked for a tanning place and have been tanning in beds for about 10 years and you want to give your skin time to recover and make sure you use good lotion to help repair the damage skin cells and reduce peeling. Also please read the bottles before using...all the indoor lotions say no spf or does not protect against burning..and why would it! It's indoor!!! DUH! lol

  • im 13 and i go on them (every wednsday , friday , sunday) for 6 min's. i use lotion. isit safe for me?.

    w.b

  • Comment removed

  • if your 13 you shouldn't be using them...you have to be 18 or older to sign a contract and if your under 18 you have to have guardian's written permission for liability purposes!

  • Also doing 6 mins? That won't do crap for you tanning wise...what's the max on the bed..usually the least amount when you first start out for ex: is 7 mins in a 20 min bed!...Lotions are best to use that have lots of vitamins in them...but remember indoor lotions do NOT have SPF in them because they are indoor..if them did it would defeat the purpose of tanning in a tanning bed! But never tan ontop of your sunburn..you need to give your skin time to recover!

  • ok thanks. so its safe for me?

    w.b

  • well I wouldn't recommend it for your age but if a tanning place is willing to do it and you're parents are okay with it...I don't see what can stop you...just please be careful and make sure to use a good lotion everytime you go...I always use California Tanning products because they have lots of vitamins.

  • ok thx

  • I tan, but I'm a 19 year old biology minor... I would suggest you stop, and wait until you're at least 18 or 19. Maybe start tanning before your prom. I realise there's a lot of pressure to be tan, but breaking down the collagen network under your skin is going to have you looking like a soccer mom before you even graduate. Tanning bed lotions aren't protective.

Be safe. Why don't you go outside and hang out with friends in the summer, wearing sunblock? Same difference.

    Good luck, be safe.

  • @Chaseawaythefog

I am almost 50 years old.

I have tanned indoors & out all of my life. I now know to tan in moderation & never burn.

Tanning has protected my bones (vitamin D), when I fell off a ladder (8 ft onto my hip & leg on concrete)

I look at least 10 years younger than I am. They key? Tan in moderation & use high quality moisturizers & tanning lotions =)

Afterall your skin is your largest organ, take care of it!

  • @truthabouttanning

Tanning in moderation isn't the "key" to your good skin. Your genes are. Had you not tanned at all you skin would probably look 20 years younger instead of 10.

  • @Rafedile

Yes, Genes do play a part in "good skin", as do many other factors (environment, diet, exercise, smoking, etc).

Actually my skin would look 20 years younger if I had not BURNED so much, before I became so educated about UV, but it would look 20 years older than it does, had I not tanned at all. UV actually stimulates regeneration if absorbed in moderation (according to skin type), as it was designed to do. Tanning is a natural function that is a part of our body (skin) for a reason.

  • @truthabouttanning

I disagree, any amount of UV radiation promotes the forming of thymine dimers which essentially = damaged skins cells. Our body normally fixes these errors so its not a huge deal, but for every 10^7 corrections there is one mistake. Each mistake ends up damaging nearby cells in a cascading event. This is why you skin is fine until you are 30/40 but then accelerates towards its degenerative state, its because the effects are exponential, not linear.

  • NO IT IS NOT.

    Please stop.

    It's not worth dying over.

  • I use to think tanning beds were stupid until I learned the horrors of vitamin D deficiency. I'd like to know the difference between the kind of beds that optimize the UVB or whatever it is that causes vitamin D synthesis.

  • Tanning lamps produce primarily UVA and any where from 1% to 6% UVB which is lower than the sun. There has never been a study that has linked TANNING to skin cancer but there HAS been study's that link BURNING to skin cancer. This is why you go to a responsible salon that gives you a tan in a safe way without burning. Did you know that UVB actualy produces Vitamin D in the body which as been proven to prevent 17 differen forms of skin cancer. Oh and indoor lotions do not contain spf either.

  • lol! You just took all the words right out of my mouth. Thank you :)

I chuckled a little bit when she was talking about indoor lotions and how they protect you from burning... haha not so much, but shes right! if you tan indoors, you should use a lotion to condition your skin :)

  • great vid - i tried a tanning bed once - weakest powered bed for 5 or 10 minutes - and still got burned!

I hear canada is looking into banning them - I'd like to see the US follow suit.

One thing i didn't know was that people can actually get addicted to the tanning beds - makes sense - just like smoking, people know it's bad for them, but they do it anyway.
