Greetings! First of all thanks a lot for the video! But I was wondering, have you got any relationship with Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth? Because I noticed several similarities such as facial characteristics and accent!
Thank you. Well as far as Dani Filth goes I'm not aware of any relation. That's not to say that we don't come from a similar area. I couldn't even answer that because I don't know enough about them. Just a bit about their music.
I have a horrible tone of voice, plus I can't really sing in tune at all. I really want to sing, but I can't afford lessons, and I can't find any videos that help me with my tone. What can I do to get a better tone when I sing?
Even the most successful singers hate their own voice. Ask yourself how many people said you have a horrible tone other than you. Remember, what you have is what makes you unique. You might get sick of listening to it every day but other people might find it fascinating. If you tried to sound like anyone else that would be just copying. You should learn to appreciate your own uniqueness :)
You don't. The noise always comes from within the throat. You use your diaphragm to push the air out, rather than blowing it out, and that gives it a much deeper and fuller sound.
Quick question ... I know anyone can improve their singing (vibrato/note changes, etc etc), but can someone improve the actual tone/quality of theiir voice? Mine sounds monotone and flat (anything but clean and clear). I know that some things can be improved, but this--I'm unsure. Some things you're just born with, it seems.
Monotone and flat is not a definition of your tone. It's a definition of your vocal delivery. Your tone is the basic sound of your voice. Those imperfections in an otherwise perfect sine wave. This can be got from 1 minute or even one second of your voice. Yes you can put colour into your words. That comes with being expressive. Tell a story with feeling and people will want to listen :)
Is that what other people say about it, or is that how you see it?
Pitch and duration can be improved upon with regular practice, and you can modify your tone from the natural sound of your voice if you wish, again with practice.
Lol. This is your opinion, and it the end our own opinions don't matter. It's what other people think. Use their opinions, good or bad, to help you see things you might not have thought of.
Are you sure that singing is for you. You might have difficulty in achieving any ambitions in that area. Your perception of time is 4 times that of reality (maybe your boredom level) and you insult those whose give away advice for free. There's a great saying. "Be careful who you step on on the way up, because you might have to meet them again on the way back down" :)
Do you think it would be difficult to sing "Enter Sandman" by Metallica for a beginner? And, maybe you do a cover of it... lol. But I really need to learn to sing for our band... no more just screamo crap. {:-)
Challenges are there to be overcome. Don't ask yourself "If you can do it". Ask yourself "What do I need to do to achieve it". :) As always, it's practice, practice, practice :)
I really want to be a good singer! How often should I practice a week to be confident to show my parents so I can take lessons! I aspire to be a performer xx
Every day for short periods. About 10 to 20 minutes. Once you get into a pattern it becomes so easy. Remember that doing it on a regular basis is the important thing. It's no use trying to play catchup on the weekend by trying to do several days worth. Little and often is the key :)
Do you believe ANYONE can learn to sing through lessons and by learning proper ways of singing, or does it have to be more of a natural talent that can be grasped and polished?
Do scales help with tone? Or just pitch? What exercises would you recommend for tone? I have a flat, gritty, monotone voice by nature. I know I will never be able to completely get rid of it, but I would like to practice to improve that. Thanks :)
I wouldn't be to hasty to get rid of a gritty tone. Many people try hard to get that kind of sound because it adds character. The scales will help with the monotone aspect. Also remember that the sound of your voice is unique, and that's one of the main reasons why we all love particular singing voices.
I really appreciate these videos. I have a band that wants me to sing but I feel I need a lot more practice and these videos are definitely going to lead me in the right direction.
not quite, it's like saying if you can walk, then you can run. I'm sure most people find walking easy, but running a marathon? the similarity is that they are both muscular activities: one comes quite naturally, the other requires training. I doubt that anyone who can walk would assume that they can run like a trained athlete!
if you want to run (sing) then you must do some exercises, if you want to walk (talk) then carry on, and make no effort.
@mrridleyc I wouldn't use that analogy myself. The difference in energy required for running and walking is vast. Running a marathon really goes out there too. Most people already have the power in their voice because it's the same as speaking in a raised voice. Only the pronunciation and pitch of the words are arranged in such a way as to be pleasant to the ear :) It isn't energy that most require. It's technique :) Thanks for the input.
@jeffstunes lol, i hadn't meant to suggest that it was energy that was required but, as you state, it's technique - I was referring to the training and effort required, in as much that one cannot take singing for granted because one can talk anymore than I could expect to be in the olympics next year because I'm able to walk.
This is true. A lot of people can learn how to sing relatively quickly, but it takes dedication and practice to be able to perform for an hour or so on stage. I'm guessing that's what you mean. A sustained performance, which if anyone has any ambition to achieve concert performances, does require that sort of preparation.
I do get some of those commenting on my vids, but most are here for a casual interest.
okay so i have a question for any of you to answer bout singing..... anyone who knows the real answer to this please, when you are breathing in and out of your diaphragm for singing, like when you take a breath in and inhale are you breathing out as well at the same time as your singing? like as your singing words air is leaving the mouth and your tone is like kinda breathy?
I have mentioned this in the comments before in on form or another. You breath with your lungs. Your diaphragm is a set of muscles that you use to push the air out as opposed to blowing it out. So yes, some air does come out, but very little when using the diaphragm because the sound is purer. The other end of the spectrum is a whisper which is nearly all air. If you shout loudly, you are using your diaphragm fully.
A lot of artists out there that are making good money have started without a voice. The one thing that most of them have in common is that their worst critic is themselves. So I believe that anyone can learn to sing. When you receive criticism (honest criticism) don't sit there and get depressed. Think about what they said, and then think about what you need to do to improve in that area :)
Just saying, jeffstunes you are kinda hot haha! I am a guy so don't get all happy if your looking for a girl but you have a nice natural voice and your cute hehe.
This is by far the most common question I've had. Shout! You are using your diaphragm. The answer is that you wont feel it. Gargle some water while saying Aaaah. That's making full use of your diaphragm. What you will notice is that it will seem if the sound is coming from lower in your body. Use that as a guide. Secondly, everything I just told you is in my videos.
Everybody uses their diaphragm to some extent. To talk, and to sing. You just need to know how to utilise it more when singing. The videos show how to do that. Physically feeling it is difficult because it's internal and there's not a lot of nerve endings inside, compared to the surface of the skin.
These videos are designed to help those things. The breathing exercises will give you control which can result in longer notes. How and when to breathe between notes is also important to learn. Again, as with everything else. It's all about practice, practice and more practice :)
Thank you so much for the help I just have one question. What do you do when you yourself don't like the sound of your own voice. As for me when I tend to sing I sing with the range of my talking voice if you know what I mean which I really hate. Is there any way you can change this? Like change the style of your singing?
First of all, welcome to the club. Nearly everybody hates the sound of their own voice and I include most of the successful artists in history. The formula for singing in a particular style is very simple. Practice, practice, practice. Think about it. If you keep on practicing something. In time you will get better at doing it. It jut requires time and patience.
This might sound simple but it is. Practice singing those songs and all songs in the genre you want to be a part of. You will rightly develop your own vocal sound because as you know. There is only one Paul McCartney and only one Robert Plant :)
Hi there. This is one of a series of 3 videos I put up for a few friends. However a lot of others have found them useful as you can see by the views. Outside of singing the main areas are confidence and belief in yourself. Inside of singing it's all about regular moderated practice. Every day. If you follow all the advice in these videos and practice then you should see improvement. How much over how much time varies from person to person :)
It could be because of a number of reasons. Frequently it's due to stress or damage to your vocal equipment. If it's something that is consistent (not only during colds and directly after shouting episodes) then I'd advise seeing an Ear Nose and Throat doctor for an accurate diagnosis :)
I think I mentioned this in one of the 3 videos. It's a good idea to pick a song you like. If you are just starting out then one that is not too challenging. When you've mastered all the techniques in that song, move on to a slightly more challenging song, and so on.
It is very difficult to calculate that. The best I can say is between 3 months and several years. Each person is different and many variables have to be taken into account. How much singing have they done in their life. Conscious and unconscious? How easily do they learn? how much do they enjoy learning?
@GhettoMuffins120 eww.... what you told me was just completely disgusting.. Idc if you're joking.. still gross.. but I agree to you, he was a good actor.. but he's old now.
If you sound congested and you know that you are not congested then I'm guessing that you are singing through your nose. Releasing some sound through your nose. Ideally it should all be coming out of your mouth. The gargling example shows you what a pure vocal sound can sound like. It takes a lot of practice to break a habit but with perseverance it can always be achieved.
@LA6616 I think you need some help.. you're probably stuck in 70's... I hope you realize how old Chuck Norris is by now... people are starting to forget him... so stop making stupid jokes like that. You're making a fool of yourself.
I don't think there is a good or a bad. Just fashionable and unfashionable and that changes year on year. I believe that if you can deliver a song in the right way, the tone is unimportant. It's true that not everybody will like it but that's also true of every successful singer in the world. That's why we have such a variety of tones on offer and I wouldn't have it any other way :)
Soft and sweet is one aspect of a voice and many have success singing that way. However if you wish to sing in different ways you will have to decide precisely what you want to achieve before you start. Otherwise your efforts will be aimless. Then it's practice, practice and more practice.
This sounds very helpful. I want to try out for the towns high school's show choir but thats only at the end of next school year so I think I'll have plenty of time to work on my voice.
Hi I can't reach high note, but in my opinion if I practce I think I can control my voice,but I don't have idea hoe to practice! Plzzz help me and can I learn how to sing high note? Thank U!!
THe best advice I can give is to tell you to follow the advice in the 3 videos. They show you how you can extend your range. Don't forget though, it requires regular practice and patience.
Try the gargling with water trick. This forces you to push the air out with your diaphragm rather than blow it out, and that's what you want to achieve when singing.
Lol. The good thing about that is that dead cats don't make any sound at all. Did you know that it's not so much the singing that makes the performer. It's the confidence in themselves. I know that when I sing I do it because I enjoy it. The fact that other people like it too is a bit of a bonus :)
Great video, I sing from my diaphram or try too I was trained to breath like that when I learned how to play the trumpet.. this series is really good.
hey i have a question jeffstune, I used to be a metal singer and ive f***ed up my voice pretty bad, so its pretty scratchy now whenever i try to sing, now i sing for worship, is there anything i can do to help repair as much of my voice as possible?
You are still quite young. Our bodies are amazing and can to some extent repair themselves if you give them time to and go easy on them. Just do your singing exercises, but don't overdo them. Gently!
Personally, I'd love to hear a scratchy voice singing worship songs. It's not all about a choirboy voice you know :)
There's nothing wrong with that. There are a number of guys who have quite a high register. Ultimately we are all unique and that's what makes the world of music so interesting :)
I've always thought the best drink whilst singing is water. I wouldn't imagine that milk could be harmful but I haven't tried using whilst singing. I only drink water then. I normally have milk on my breakfast cereal :)
I always used to sing for myself because it made me feel good. I wasn't really concerned what other people thought. Fortunately it turned out that more people liked it than disliked it :)
Anyone got any tips on goth vocals?

I wouldn't be to hasty to get rid of a gritty tone. Many people try hard to get that kind of sound because it adds character. The scales will help with the monotone aspect. Secondly, everything I just told you is in my videos.

11Kiks11 11 months ago

I'm sure that's been mentioned about my before. Now all I have to discover is which one you're referring to. David Mitchell or Robert Webb.
jeffstunes 11 months ago
Lmao when he started singing! Very good voice actually, and good tips, my choir teacher always tells us to sing from your diaphragm:)

@Leenaabdalla99
Thank you.
Your choir teacher was right. It makes sense. Using your diaphragm gives you more sound for less effort :)

How do i know if i'm singing from my daiphram ? O.o
PostModernPatriarch 1 year ago
@PostModernPatriarch
Everybody uses their diaphragm to some extent. To talk, and to sing. You just need to know how to utilise it more when singing. The videos show how to do that. Physically feeling it is difficult because it's internal and there's not a lot of nerve endings inside, compared to the surface of the skin.

@jeffstunes when i sing i feel out of breath whenever i pause
thts not supposed to happen is it, whneva ppl hear me sing thy say i hav it but my singin is too breathy...any tips
sunnyapril12 11 months ago
@sunnyapril12

Like change the style of your singing?
adyeardley 1 year ago
@adyeardley

Can anybody tip me on rock n roll singing? Like Paul McCartney and Robert plant kind of thing
9Iamthewalrus 1 year ago
@9Iamthewalrus
This might sound simple but it is. Practice singing those songs and all songs in the genre you want to be a part of. You will rightly develop your own vocal sound because as you know. There is only one Paul McCartney and only one Robert Plant :)
jeffstunes 1 year ago
i think i'm a horrible singer but i want to be able to sing in front of a crowd one day and have them clap for me
any advice
also do you have anything that will garante a better singing voice
yanitwilightsuperfan 1 year ago
@yanitwilightsuperfan
How much over how much time varies from person to person :)
jeffstunes 1 year ago
If i sing , and suddenly theres no sound but air is still coming out , what does that mean?
jyjyericz 1 year ago
@jyjyericz
It could be because of a number of reasons. Frequently it's due to stress or damage to your vocal equipment. If it's something that is consistent (not only during colds and directly after shouting episodes) then I'd advise seeing an Ear Nose and Throat doctor for an accurate diagnosis :)
jeffstunes 1 year ago
@jyjyericz It could also be a note thats too high, I get it allot..

@jeffstunes what song do you suggest for practicing
theif55 1 year ago
@theif55
I think I mentioned this in one of the 3 videos. It's a good idea to pick a song you like. If you are just starting out then one that is not too challenging. When you've mastered all the techniques in that song, move on to a slightly more challenging song, and so on.
jeffstunes 1 year ago
how long does it take the average person to become a decent singer if they practiced everyday? if its possible to calculate that
solidcaptainfalcon 1 year ago
@solidcaptainfalcon
It is very difficult to calculate that. The best I can say is between 3 months and several years. Each person is different and many variables have to be taken into account. How much singing have they done in their life. Conscious and unconscious? How easily do they learn? how much do they enjoy learning?
Just to name a few.

Every time I sing I sound congested. What can I do?
StreamingKnowledge 1 year ago
@StreamingKnowledge
If you sound congested and you know that you are not congested then I'm guessing that you are singing through your nose. Releasing some sound through your nose. Ideally it should all be coming out of your mouth. The gargling example shows you what a pure vocal sound can sound like. It takes a lot of practice to break a habit but with perseverance it can always be achieved.

what if u dont have a good tone can you still be a good singer?
XxCowLoverXx9 1 year ago
@XxCowLoverXx9
Well what is a good tone?
I don't think there is a good or a bad. Just fashionable and unfashionable and that changes year on year. I believe that if you can deliver a song in the right way, the tone is unimportant. It's true that not everybody will like it but that's also true of every successful singer in the world. That's why we have such a variety of tones on offer and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

When I sing, its just sound soft/sweet (so i've been told) how do I sing with my normal voice.?
PikabooxxD 1 year ago
@PikabooxxD
Soft and sweet is one aspect of a voice and many have success singing that way. However if you wish to sing in different ways you will have to decide precisely what you want to achieve before you start. Otherwise your efforts will be aimless. Then it's practice, practice and more practice.

THe best advice I can give is to tell you to follow the advice in the 3 videos. They show you how you can extend your range. Don't forget though, it requires regular practice and patience.
jeffstunes 1 year ago
u said that we should sing from below but how do we do that? XD i cant really control XD
Rienei 1 year ago
@Rienei
Try the gargling with water trick. This forces you to push the air out with your diaphragm rather than blow it out, and that's what you want to achieve when singing.

tubytarzan1 1 year ago 10
@tubytarzan1
Lol. The good thing about that is that dead cats don't make any sound at all. Did you know that it's not so much the singing that makes the performer. It's the confidence in themselves. I know that when I sing I do it because I enjoy it. The fact that other people like it too is a bit of a bonus :)

hey i have a question jeffstune, I used to be a metal singer and ive f***ed up my voice pretty bad, so its pretty scratchy now whenever i try to sing, now i sing for worship, is there anything i can do to help repair as much of my voice as possible?
Shrikke 1 year ago
@Shrikke
