@kanefielding - A 8.9 earthquake is around 31000 times more powerful than a 6. This level of earthquake happens perhaps once in 500 - 1000 years. The fact that it wasn't instantly destroyed and then washed away by the tsunami proves just how tough these plants are.

Perhaps you missed the pictures of the exploding *gas* plant? The radiation level (whilst always a cause for concern) is within tolerable limits and is still localised.
