@usernameinvalid8 Have you heard how they turn "Gypsy Queen" (the instrumental second half of the tune) into "Third Stone from the Sun" in concert? They work together seamlessly, which probably explains why you thought this sounded like Hendrix.
Fleet wood Mac musican may have wrote it . But like anything else in life who made it a great song Santana Santana Santana. Like America is great it was stolen from the American Indians
I was inbetween 4&5 years old when this album was released. I thank my parents and God for giving them such great taste in music. This is part of my roots. I was raised listening to this as well as so many other great clasics. I am greatful as I was fortunate enough to be growing up in the east bay of northern CA at such an important period of time for music. This is just one shining example of how music deeply touches the soul. Thank you Carlos & company!
I bought this album on vinyl and played it all the time. The first song "Swinging winds crying beasts" was an excellent expression of modern jazz." Black Magic Woman" stands apart for the guitar solo that proved Santana is a master musician. The bass line was virtuosity personified. The latin percussion made it a favorite in hispanic populations throughout America (Central & Southern too) "Oye como va" was original by Tito Puente. But his rendition packs more power. Truly a masterpiece of pop.
This is when I started playing the congas, that was when I was in my 20's and I got to so good, but of course it was because of santana, there early years in the 70's. Going on 60 and I can still keep up a great percausion tune. And because of this group.
@ftwfckyea Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green) did better. Far, far better. The fact that more people bought Santana's version does nothing to convince me that its good music. More people prob bought Spice Girls albums than some Santana albums, does that make the Spice Girls better than Santana? By your logic it does...so put down that guitar and Santana album and get listening to some Spice Girls! Haha. It's just middle-of-the-road crap. It has nothing on the FM version, I stand by my initial statement
@psychedelicporcupine spice girls...who the fuck cares about them and who the hell listens to that shit now and days. stop trying to make urself feel better cos Santana is better then fleetwood mac. you can have black magic woman, i'll throw Europa and that song alone would tear a hole in peter green
@ftwfckyea No-one listens to the Spice Girls, lol. That was entirely my point though. Just because they have high sales figures doesn't mean they are good (as in the case of the Spice Girls, who are utter drivel). I feel the same applies with Santana... higher sales then the Mac but IMO nowhere near as raw and passionate as the original was. I have no need to comfort myself, I am quite happy with my preference. I have no idea what you are talking about with Europa by the way.
Winter land New Years Eve late 70's back to back to back and closed the hall down... so sad so sweet. Front row was elbows on the stage and he would come out in a white sequins glitter suit with tassels hangin off him and crouch down and do this solo right in front of our eyeballs... I will never forget it. Ty to allaya partyers and rockers out there! Burn one for me!
I purchased this album about five times on wax (yes, there was music before CD's and mp3's). Played the grooves off it some many times. Playing music on 33 rpm wax was a whole different experience, not forgetting the cool door posters that come with the album. Different times but don't miss'em.
from 3:40 to the end is pura vida....gets me all ...i dunno...it's like something possesses me to air guitar the hell out of this and bang on the table like a wild drumming maniac......hooo ah!
"Classic Rock" stations should have their licenses revoked whenever they don't play the full version of this song....or at least turn in their man card.
I am 26 and love to read the heartfelt comments from older people connected to this music. It enhanches the experience of listening this song imagining how much memories are attached to it!
when I was quite young (17), me and friends would get high on beer and pot while listening to this soulfull music. I'm now 62 and don't smoke or drink much, all I need is the sound of Santana to send off to nirvana!
original santana greg rollie ,mick shrieve, carabello, escobedo, chepito areas and brown was the better all the time............................for ever and ever....
I remember when we listened to this song and you told me it reminded you of me! LOL ;-) Hmmm... well, if it were true - you'd already be feeling my voodoo calling. I'm working on my frequency - Alright universe, do your crazy thing! I am casting my voodoo love out and I will let you guide it this time! Great song / thanks for sharing. One of my favorites. dZ
11 guys don't know what is a real musical orgasm. I'm sorry but this song is smooth and also powerfull, calm and electric. It makes me feel full of love and desire, and that's the point of the song : if a song of love creates on me a full and deep love, it's perfect ! Santana played the most wonderful musical love. Brilliant !
Two members of this version of Santana quit the group in 1973 to form Journey ("Wheel in the Sky," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Open Arms" and "Faithfully"): they were keyboardist-singer Gregg Rolie and guitarist Neal Schon. But Rolie would leave Journey in 1980 to rejoin Santana, and Rolie's position was filled by Jonathan Cain, late of the Babys.
@ClassicTVMan1981X And Journey and Santana would play New years eve at winterland a number of times including the last show at the hall b4 closin it for good.
3:40 onwards is like a rollercoaster ride across space..seriously. i heard this 1st when i was 5 years old and it still give that same effect. BRILLIANT!
@MotCatalin Gypsy Queen is an instrumental not original to Santana.
