  • not a fan of pennsy power but MY GOD that whistle!!!! I need a tsunami sound decoder for some of my engines with a bass speaker with that whistle

  • 5:26 , Best whistle sequence of ANY OTHER 1361 video on Youtube. That one gives me chills. and Jack Wheelihan did a fabulous job :D

  • 2:10, Is that a great site or what. Awesome post, Thanx, I enjoyed every second of it.

  • I bet Norfolk Southern would permit some steam excursions over the Curve, perhaps in conjunction with a special event such as Railfest, and I bet they would at least assist in moving it to Tyrone to run on the tourist line there that usually runs out of Bellefonte. Norfolk Southern will be running steam themselves with TVRM over most of their system starting next year, 22 states in four years.

  • There would be a place to run it, Norfolk Southern is more open to steam now plus the line from Tyrone to Lock Haven (excursion railroad) could be used like it was then.

  • I still think that if she's ever restored, they should bring her back to Steamtown. They don't really have a place to run her out in Altoona and Steamtown's got over 50 miles of track to work with. Plus, more steamers at Steamtown is always a good thing :)

  • sweet!

  • love that whistle!

  • @Nec1228 Kinda gives you the chills, doesn't it? That echoing tone sounds really ghostly.

  • this engine was cursed with what must surely be the shortest excursion careeer of any U.S. engine!

  • Wow this is amazing! Classic PRR K4's and a really sweet Pennsy 3 chime! I dont know how it could get better!

  • Spent more time blowing the whistle than driving the train.

  • *sighs happily* I love the PRR K4, such an awesome, yet inspiring class of engine.

  • Love It! Beautiful!

  • All Abroad ,The Pennsylvania K-4

Next Stop, New York Central Station.

  • @HaloCE14 Sweet. lol and thats also true. well i just want to see some Pennsy steam action PERIOD. im tired of old #643.

  • @HaloCE14 Well hope is always a choice you can have on regards of 1361. I think Altoona has spent too much money for this engine to just give up now. They know that their are plenty of fans out there who would support a cause. Having it preserved is nice but having a live fire would be better. According to rumors, I have heard that the Museum will put a fire in her but will be confined to their yard and not NS's yard.

  • lol true. well time will tell. Fate and destiny will also throw its hat in there too. I hope we get to see some big action besides that little 0-6-0 #643.

  • So much has changed since she was retired in 1957. We'll be lucky to ever see her running again.

  • i have a model of this engine but if she was restored to operation what happen to her for them to take her out of service?...i always wondered about tht

  • @EMDSD14R According to some website I saw she was in York PA in 1988 when she had a main bearing and axle failure. The fire was dropped right there and she was towed presumably back to Altoona where upon inspected of other areas other than the axles the firebox was found to have multiple cracks and the smoke box had worn out to being really thin. The smoke box probably got that way from years of soot, coal, and ash going through it during service.

  • Fantastic audio. I think its sad that the only locomotive operating from the Pennsy is also the smallest one preserved. 0-6-0 #643 i believe. Thats really sad seeing how theres bigger power like The i1sa, m1b, and 2 k4s. why cant pennsylvania make an effort to bring one of these locos back to life?

  • @rboffill Probably because PA is one of the poorest states in the U.S. Ever since over seas manufacturing began, PA has lost thousands of jobs because of the fact that Pennsylvania was based off of steel, railroads, coal, and some lumber. Without those, PA does not have much money. Thats why PA is also in so much debt. The state government does not know where to get the money for its expenses thus the cause of all the borrowing. This may sound like a lot of excuses but in reality it is true.

  • @Bassfanatic94 Sounds elaborate and i can see where going. Freaking China lol. Well i hope this recession passes and PA can get back on its feet.

  • @rboffill Me too my friend because when the economy gets better I will personally set up a fund to get this bad boy 1361 back on the rails.

  • @Bassfanatic94 Sounds good. Any true Pennsy fan would love at least one of the True Grit Giants preserved from the the RR like 4483, 6755, and 1361. Any of the 3 would be a blessing to see chugging along, working its joints to entertain the American crowds. :)

  • @rboffill Yes any three of those steamers you mentioned would be a treat! I believe that 4483 is the closet Pennsy engine to restoration but the historical society that maintains the engine hasn't updated it in years. I just stay optimistic about 1361 I think she will get steaming again. It may take time but Altoona has spent too much money on her now to stop.

  • @Bassfanatic94 Yea man so true. Well they recently came out with news saying that they bought property and making their own musuem along with this steel mill historical society in Buffalo. Rumor has it since theyre builiding engine houses and stations that since they are doing excursions, the I1 might be the canidate to do so. And well its all up to them, if theyre smart they will definately continue with 1361.

  • @rboffill They better continue with 1361 don't get me wrong having an I1 running will be awesome but I probably will never see it. 1361 came to York in 1988 and that is in fact the place where she broke down. York is 30 minutes from me. Altoona Railroaders Museum has spent too much money to get her running and it would be a disgrace to all of the older workers who did the restoration back in the 80s to see it go and rest with mothballs inside of it.

  • @rboffill #643 is not the smallest Pennsy engine left. One of the class A5 switchers is at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum in Strasburg. There's a group that owns one of the I class 2-10-0's in New York that has plans to restore that engine to operation.

  • @PereMarquette1223 Yes i know that. PRR i1sa #4483. im a massive Pennsy fan. i hope they do man. i have an even more extrodinary passion for M1s I1s and K4s. thtats also true. im meaning that its the smallest ever operated after Steam was dropped from roster in 1957. other Pennsy steamers have rolled along after 1957. to this day, #643 is the smallest.

  • @rboffill Actually, the smallest surviving Pennsylvania Railroad steamer is the A5 0-4-0 tender engine #94 at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. But I agree, I would LOVE to see an operational K4 someday.

  • @TomedysTrains Ik this. ima a HUGE Pennsy fan. and someone else did point that obvious fact. what i meant to say in tht comment was that #643 is currently the smallest OPERATING PRR STEAMER. and i believe a 0-4-0 was not preserved but im not sure. in tht case. if theres no 0-4-0. then its the smallest preserved PRR steamer. its also the smallest PPR steamer to ever operate currently. so therefore. i was off in tht comment. my bad lol

  • @rboffill I agree with you completely, but it really all rolls back to the Pennsylvania Railroad. They standardized all the part on their engines, which made it easier to replace, but at the same time, they were not built to last. The parts on all the survivors are so crappy that it often costs twice as much to restore.

  • @rboffill The current issue, and also the reason 1223 and 7002 were retired, is with issues such as boilers and fireboxes, how do you repair/replace them, without "altering the historical integrity".

  • @PRR1223 Im telling you man, the RRMPA are the only douchebags.. their such dipshits to the point where that comes about. i can see where their arugment standpoint is, but seriously. Look where tht point has gotten them. All their pretegious, historic, iconic steam engines are rotting like fruits and veggies outside. Take a look at Google images. And this is coming from a True Pennsy fan. To me Its the biggest disgrace. If any OTHER PRR steamer operates again. Im putting my faith into I1SA 4483.

  • @rboffill look i know everyone wants to say " lets bring that steam engine back to life" well money aint the only problem, this engine is over 90 yrs old, maybe the boiler is in bad shape, i mean their is a reason why it only ran for about a year after it was rebuilt in the 80s, this engine is a piece of history and should be saved and restored or at least kept in good enough condition to be brought back to life sometime in the future, but the clock is ticking, they dont last forever

  • 0:55 nice!

  • What chime whistle was she using here? Was it even a Pennsy chime?

  • @xxxDeath9572xxx Yep, that's a Pennsy 3 chime

  • @dcoursey82 my favorite

  • At 2:07 you really get to see how fast a K4 can go!

  • Anyone know why Doyle McCormacks tool car (DLMX 5811) was in the consist? Its the first car behind the tender in SP Daylight paint.

  • @arob48 Doyle McCormack was a large part of her restoration to operation.

  • @Nickboy90 I hope he helps her back. I think she will steam and run runs again but she needs all the help she can get.

  • DAMN ! FANTASTICO VIDEo.....Audio Rocks!!! thank YOU!

  • I absolutely love this steam engine! 1361 is my favorite along with 3750. The K4 class was awesome! I personally also like the modern look of it instead of the prewar look. But either way it is still an awesome locomotive. I hope they get her running again which I think will happen according to reports from the Altoona Railroaders Museum that they will put a fire in her belly but won't be able to do much because of FRA regulations. But once the economy gets better I think we will see her running

  • Thanks for this K4 vid ...from k4 freak north of the border..

    Trenton Ontario canada!!! A+A+A+

  • Love the echoes of the wistle sound.

  • love the whistle pennsy 3 chime makes a classic love the good ol 1361 she shall ride the rails soon

  • great video. definitely one of the best sounding loco's.. that whistle is awesome
