yea, jesus, that was scary good. i was so upset when it ended! i stopped watching the screen and just listened, so when it cut off it was like a gut punch.
I guess each of has an idea of what a drum solo should be. Some of the folks that have commented here expressed disdain for this solo. What I feel from this piece of work, is a man who is free to do what he feels, who is not out to impress his fans. He is immersed in the moment and going where he goes, not because he's thinking, "I got to do x-y-z" That's because he is a true artist--spontaneous and in the moment.
You know it takes a long while for a musician to get to the point of forgetting about blazing speed and technique wowing the audience and getting down to simply playing with musical ideas. This solo is the mark of a highly advanced, very confident musical mind free of competition with other. He is totally free to honestly pursue the music . Very refreshing.
@drumbfounded Hey, it's Jack and he's beautiful. The solo is melodic and beautiful. However, let's be real for a second: If this was a very talented and equally musical Joe Schmo (which there are quite a few out there, btw), there is no way they are getting away with an open solo like this. I'm not saying that musical illiteracy is okay (on the part of "patrons"), but I'm just facing facts here. Joe Schmo plays this solo, and people are walking out or catcalling.
As a jazz drummer taking a solo, you expect yourself to not repeat your self from solo to solo,to explore new area, to grow in different directions. The soloists first want to compliment the song they are playing with their solo ( song here is ?)Then they want to challenge themselfs, the listner is last by default in this idiom. A rock drum soloist has a different set of parameters to deal with. Jack is sure on the top 5 of my all time fav drum soloists, all of whom happen to be jazz players.
I understand he played piano.Guys who play other instruments i.e. Joe Morello (violin) have a very differnt approach to the set. I think this is great.Jack rulz!!!!
The problem most people seem to have with this video is they expect some over-the-top mega-chops-fest solo where he pulls out everything he knows. You can find plenty of that on YouTube from Jack...this isn't meant to be that at all. He's being MUSICAL...he's making MUSIC...he's drawing an image. It's not about what he's playing...it's HOW it's being played.

i love how he has more resonating bells than anything else on here.... makes it that much stupider hes not very good...and you can say im stupid but ull never see me in my life so fuck you
Ok, I was just joking...I know who´s Jack Dejonette, I know he´s a very melodic and good drummer. He´s really good, but I don´t understand this solo...If you see it for first time and you don´t know him, u can think he´s learning to play
your a dickk he is a world renowned drummer who has played with the likes of miles davis and john and robbie coltrain you cunt sort it out i watched him yesterday at the cheltnam jazz festival hes a ledgend your just a dirty white boi
This guy should buy a piano, and giving up drumming...he thinks he´s playing piano, and the result is shit. He hasn´t find his way yet. We´ve to be realistics, and not overrate people like him, IS NOT FAIR.
I recommend you start with basic rudiments, or things like that. Check out videos of good drummers like Tony williams, Elvin Jones, Peter Erskine...and you´ll learn fast.
I suposse that´s the first time you play drums, and it´s normal, at the begining never sounds right...but don´t give up!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Who´s that guy???? He must be learning to playnow...Ok man, watch out your technic, you must improve. Ok, I understand, the first years is not easy, but I´m sure you can improve. Take lessons with a teacher.
And I'm realising what type of drummer I would rather be. The one who plays solidly, who is musical, who is innovative in terms of their playing but also in finding different sounds on the kit, the one that plays with actual music and musicians, one who has little ego while playing, letting everyone have the room to breathe. I'd rather be known for my grooves than my chops.
I used to love watching Lang, Donati, Minnemann videos, all choppers. But somewhere down the road, I realised how musically irrelevant those drummers could be. Great drummers no doubt, but through their drumming prowess they miss the mark for me. I also grew up a bit musically and appreciate other drummers more. Jack Dejohnette, Stanton Moore, Brian Blade, Billy Martin are my favourite drummers. They are just unique, all of them. And at this point, I enjoy this video more than I do a chops one.
i don't think i would call this boring - it's so melodic that it's really pretty refreshing considering how many drum solos are just people trying for too long to sound like buddy rich. Dejohnette doesn't really bother to try to show off his chops he just develops beautiful musical ideas that really make his solos the exact opposite of boring.
My god. I can't believe people actually pretend to like this stuff. Its only because he is 'famous' that people say they like it. If I played this people would hate it.
DeJohnette is overrated. Plus his crashes are too friggin HIGH!
bro the only people who pretend to like this stuff are the people who don't(can't) understand it. Their the people who musically can't comprehend this level of playing. It looks like you made the list.
I think this is what happens when incredibly talented musicians become bored with playing night after night. You disconnect with what inspired you to become a musician in the first place. Creativity has no limit when you don't care. Whatever, man's gotta eat right?
Listen to his phrasing. You can hear themes and rhythms being played in a variety of ways. He is creating music. If that isn't exciting, then go listen to someone smash the cymbals real loud with some blue lights pointed at them.
When people listen to this kind of things from an unfamous player obejctively, they go away without watch their back. And now, nobody can say this is music because of player's name.
We should like music without seing who plays and then wonder to learn his name !
yet another reason why jack is great is that he is not afraid to play something that he knows people will criticize. I'd rather hear this any time, instead of a drummer who is trying to prove they've got good chops.
painting a picture of a blind guy figuring out what drums are. he may be good, but he sure is boring. i must be a beginner too if i don't like it. i'll be a beginner 30 years from now if thats the case.
well well...this is a pleasant discussion that's gone on here, isn't it? I'm sure Jack D would be sooooo proud of those who used his solo as an excuse to go off on each other.
Oh, yeah, a la Bozzio my ass. And this IS swingin'. Just think of how cool it would be if half of you pukes didn't need a metronome ticking out quarter notes so you could keep a beat. Artists like Jack and many others could then more easily get their music played on MORE radio stations and Earth would have MORE hope.
Are you a puke? I stated my problem clearly in my post. Read it again. Read some other posts. jonwilson left an insightful and informed post - he's not a puke. budychris's post is ignorant and disgusting - makes me feel like I need to puke. If you still don't get it I'll try to give a a word for word explanation of my post. Oh, and all of my favorite drummers play with attitude. Your haste to accuse me makes me want to puke. You puke.
What the fuck is your prob regarding drummers who CAN use clik tracks?,are you jealous that you just can't cut it??.I can do both depending on the type of music I am playing. Are you a puke?
You obviously DO have some sort of attitude problem.A bad attitude is NOT necessary in order to play music and play it well.Grow up!
I never stated any problem with drummers who can or do use click tracks. What an amusing presumption you've made considering much of the studio work I do involves playing with sequences. I've recorded at Winterland Studios in Minneapolis, the Chicago Recording Company, Rock Garden Studios, Arc Studios and many others. I love listening to musicians who can work a click. The attitude problem certainly is in your head...fred...
Quote-"Just think of how cool it would be if half of you pukes didn't need a metronome ticking out quarter notes so you could keep a beat".Metronone clik trak what's the fucking diff they do the same thing!.And I've played in many major studios myself up here and SO WHAT??.We both aren't household names so who cares?
Btw,YOU called me a puke,so you have the attitude arse!
beagleheadfred, do you enjoy this video as much as I do? Thus far, I'm enjoying our exchange because each time I view your reply I watch the video again. You are very argumentative, however, you don't address the important issues such as Jack DeJohnette not being a household name. What studios have you recorded at?
jroblee of course I enjoy JDJ's drumming he's fucking brilliant!.Argumentative??,I think not, actually I hate arguing!.It was your insult that started this.
I was referring to you and I not being household names not JDJ.I have recorded at Orchard Studios, Phase One,Metalworks, Nimbus 9 and Wolverton Underground.
You like the fuck word. You certainly present yourself as an arguer. I know what you were referring to when you commented on our shared anonymity. I explained to you to whom my commented was directed to and, it certainly wasn't you, as you hadn't yet posted anything. But then...you interjected an ill-founded accusation. Anyway, I accept your apology. Thanks.
I love Dejohnettes playing too, I've often thought that his solos combine virtuosity and the spontaneity of a five year old child playing a drum kit for the first time. Not a criticism just an observation. Check out his playing on the Kenny Wheeler albums Deer Wan and Gnu High.
I guarantee no one could play this, its so artistically developed and it just feels like he knows exactly what he's going to play and when, whic his just amazing in itsself.
Funny how people are so conservative about drum ideas. This is very unique.

Ok, I was just joking...I know who´s Jack Dejonette, I know he´s a very melodic and good drummer. He´s really good, but I don´t understand this solo...If you see it for first time and you don´t know him, u can think he´s learning to play
videoklueka 3 years ago
your a dickk he is a world renowned drummer who has played with the likes of miles davis and john and robbie coltrain you cunt sort it out i watched him yesterday at the cheltnam jazz festival hes a ledgend your just a dirty white boi
jjjaaammmiiilll 3 years ago
It sounds soooo bad....I can´t believe this guy earn money with that...people is crazy.
This is not a solo, because this cannot be called drumming.
videoklueka 3 years ago
well, hes playing drums therefore it can be called drumming
matthewlesco 3 years ago
This guy should buy a piano, and giving up drumming...he thinks he´s playing piano, and the result is shit. He hasn´t find his way yet. We´ve to be realistics, and not overrate people like him, IS NOT FAIR.
videoklueka 3 years ago
He actually plays the piano. He's been playing the piano since he was 12.
flamesicle 3 years ago 3
I recommend you start with basic rudiments, or things like that. Check out videos of good drummers like Tony williams, Elvin Jones, Peter Erskine...and you´ll learn fast.
I suposse that´s the first time you play drums, and it´s normal, at the begining never sounds right...but don´t give up!

Who´s that guy???? He must be learning to playnow...Ok man, watch out your technic, you must improve. Ok, I understand, the first years is not easy, but I´m sure you can improve. Take lessons with a teacher.

Take lessons? He played with Miles you idiot.

Oladipo5 3 years ago 2
I used to love watching Lang, Donati, Minnemann videos, all choppers. But somewhere down the road, I realised how musically irrelevant those drummers could be. Great drummers no doubt, but through their drumming prowess they miss the mark for me. I also grew up a bit musically and appreciate other drummers more. Jack Dejohnette, Stanton Moore, Brian Blade, Billy Martin are my favourite drummers. They are just unique, all of them. And at this point, I enjoy this video more than I do a chops one.
Oladipo5 3 years ago
If ever there was a drummer who produced meoldy from rythm..its jack de johnette
Pudkaplan 3 years ago 3
DeJohnette is overrated. Plus his crashes are too friggin HIGH!
Overrated? Watch some late 1960's 40 year old video of Jack making major jazz history Miles Davis.
Better read up on De jhonette, he's been great at this a long time.
generatrix999 4 years ago
i don't think i would call this boring - it's so melodic that it's really pretty refreshing considering how many drum solos are just people trying for too long to sound like buddy rich. Dejohnette doesn't really bother to try to show off his chops he just develops beautiful musical ideas that really make his solos the exact opposite of boring.
petewillett 4 years ago
My god. I can't believe people actually pretend to like this stuff. Its only because he is 'famous' that people say they like it. If I played this people would hate it.
DeJohnette is overrated. Plus his crashes are too friggin HIGH!
JacobEvans90 4 years ago
bro the only people who pretend to like this stuff are the people who don't(can't) understand it. Their the people who musically can't comprehend this level of playing. It looks like you made the list.
It's creativity mother f***er. Pure and true.
ckentish292 4 years ago
if i played this note for note would it still be creativity mother f***er. Pure and true?
lnm170 3 years ago
idiots - learn to play half-notes and make them swing and youll see the mastery of this - drums are an instrument, not pots... idiots
borut123456789 4 years ago
I think this is what happens when incredibly talented musicians become bored with playing night after night. You disconnect with what inspired you to become a musician in the first place. Creativity has no limit when you don't care. Whatever, man's gotta eat right?

Listen to his phrasing. You can hear themes and rhythms being played in a variety of ways. He is creating music. If that isn't exciting, then go listen to someone smash the cymbals real loud with some blue lights pointed at them.
puujisan 4 years ago 8
When people listen to this kind of things from an unfamous player obejctively, they go away without watch their back. And now, nobody can say this is music because of player's name.
We should like music without seing who plays and then wonder to learn his name !

If this is too boring why don't you go out and buy your Thomas Lang DVD or chops are us DVD and sit in a room until your arms fall off.

yet another reason why jack is great is that he is not afraid to play something that he knows people will criticize. I'd rather hear this any time, instead of a drummer who is trying to prove they've got good chops.
jazzmessenger8 4 years ago 2
Yet, I doubt he plays things considering critiscism at all. I reckon he plays what is in his sticks.

Study this mans playing before you make an idiot of yourself and criticise. Check him with Metheney for example.

awesome. Jack is one of my fav. drummers, the melodic thinking he possesses on the kit is astounding.
CJ81 4 years ago
Oh, yeah, a la Bozzio my ass. And this IS swingin'. Just think of how cool it would be if half of you pukes didn't need a metronome ticking out quarter notes so you could keep a beat. Artists like Jack and many others could then more easily get their music played on MORE radio stations and Earth would have MORE hope.
jroblee 4 years ago
Another drummer with an attitude it appears? calling some of us 'pukes".
What is your problem?
beagleheadfred 4 years ago
Are you a puke? I stated my problem clearly in my post. Read it again. Read some other posts. jonwilson left an insightful and informed post - he's not a puke. budychris's post is ignorant and disgusting - makes me feel like I need to puke. If you still don't get it I'll try to give a a word for word explanation of my post. Oh, and all of my favorite drummers play with attitude. Your haste to accuse me makes me want to puke. You puke.
jroblee 4 years ago
What the fuck is your prob regarding drummers who CAN use clik tracks?,are you jealous that you just can't cut it??.I can do both depending on the type of music I am playing. Are you a puke?
You obviously DO have some sort of attitude problem.A bad attitude is NOT necessary in order to play music and play it well.Grow up!
beagleheadfred 4 years ago
I never stated any problem with drummers who can or do use click tracks. What an amusing presumption you've made considering much of the studio work I do involves playing with sequences. I've recorded at Winterland Studios in Minneapolis, the Chicago Recording Company, Rock Garden Studios, Arc Studios and many others. I love listening to musicians who can work a click. The attitude problem certainly is in your head...fred...
jroblee 4 years ago
Quote-"Just think of how cool it would be if half of you pukes didn't need a metronome ticking out quarter notes so you could keep a beat".Metronone clik trak what's the fucking diff they do the same thing!.And I've played in many major studios myself up here and SO WHAT??.We both aren't household names so who cares?
Btw,YOU called me a puke,so you have the attitude arse!
beagleheadfred 4 years ago
beagleheadfred, do you enjoy this video as much as I do? Thus far, I'm enjoying our exchange because each time I view your reply I watch the video again. You are very argumentative, however, you don't address the important issues such as Jack DeJohnette not being a household name. What studios have you recorded at?
jroblee 4 years ago
jroblee of course I enjoy JDJ's drumming he's fucking brilliant!.Argumentative??,I think not, actually I hate arguing!.It was your insult that started this.
I was referring to you and I not being household names not JDJ.I have recorded at Orchard Studios, Phase One,Metalworks, Nimbus 9 and Wolverton Underground.
beagleheadfred 4 years ago
You like the fuck word. You certainly present yourself as an arguer. I know what you were referring to when you commented on our shared anonymity. I explained to you to whom my commented was directed to and, it certainly wasn't you, as you hadn't yet posted anything. But then...you interjected an ill-founded accusation. Anyway, I accept your apology. Thanks.

i love dejohnette but i hate this kind of playing, it is difficult to do and all, but definitely not interesting
epasurr 4 years ago
I love Dejohnettes playing too, I've often thought that his solos combine virtuosity and the spontaneity of a five year old child playing a drum kit for the first time. Not a criticism just an observation. Check out his playing on the Kenny Wheeler albums Deer Wan and Gnu High.
