great success in Rome, 22/01/1973 they returned in their country as triumphers! Mindful of this fact they came again in 2007 to play free!
This song is the ULTIMATE piece of music for me. It's a trip through the very bottom of our consciousness... the first four times I heard this masterpiece I cried on the ending part... it's out of this world. The version live in Shepperton 1973 is especially amazing. Damn, I wanna be a Prog God too!
@AtemnoYugi1232 No, it's another view of the events outlined in the Book of revelations from a certain perspective... about the underlying theme... the one you know about but can't form into a useful thought...
You said "Man, I really love when Gabriel plays the flute!" Absolutely beautiful, I agree.
And I think too when he doesn't wear masks!! His pure voice is all that's needed. Why spoil a good thing? I have to close my eyes otherwise and just listen to this awsome sound.
@MokRodrigues If I was stuck on a desert island I would have three wishes-a phonographic player, all my favourite Genesis albums and a life times supply of needles.
Phil Collins scares me doing the high voice in 4:26 and 4:32, which, I think, was a distorted voice in the studio version. Sounds like a Disney character voice XD
There are 6 idiots, at least, that have watched this. I was there. I seen them do this live. With Peter at the FOX, and Phil on the W&W tour at the FOX. I can't find it listed as being one of the times Peter "flew" at the end, but I seen one of the rare times he did. Really great.

lies112 Many thanks for upload this iconic masterpiece...which has moved me.
I don't think anyone nowadays would have the confidence to do something like this.. It's a shame, cos Peter Gabriel makes dressing as a flower look so damn awesome :P
Did Genesis do drugs during the "progressive" era. I'm pretty sure that Peter did some acid and some weed here and there when he was in high school and the early yrs of Genesis.
@phoneix91 Genesis were never a band that much into drugs. Peter would get drunk just by the sight of a glass of wine lol! Besides, REAL creativity comes from pure inspirations, WITHOUT the artifice of drugs.
@skintrade no,,,,,,i don't think so, but it was rumoured that some of the audience members did take drugs, but i could hardly believe that to be true either. drugs are bad....mmkkayy.
willow farm always makes me think of the down the rabbit hole scene from alice in wonderland, perhaps peter gabriel had it in mind when he wrote it (along with bill and ben!)
You can see it at bataclan, but it's during musical box for some reason, but what i like better is at shepperton in october 73, he puts on and old mans mask.
Undoubtably the greatest showman of all time, Peter Gabriel, who else do you know who dresses up as a flower and in freaky damn makeup, a knight, a fox in a dress and the list goes on and on!
Still in hopes of a "TRUE" Genesis reunion with Gabriel & Hackett. Keep the tour limited to several major worldwide cities: NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome. DVD it, CD it...and go on your way gentlemen...do it for the Genesis die hards!
Without question, one, if not THE greatest, most influential prog bands to exist. And to this day, Peter Gabriel continues to amaze! Genesis kept its "signature" up to the dparture of Steve Hackett. "And then there were three"....and then there was POP! Basically more radio-freindly, accessible songs. It got to the point when it was hard to differentiate Genesis and solo Phil Collins..from a lyrical perspective anyway. Gabriel stands on his own.
Great clip, but the T.V. producers must have thought, "Steve" who? How can this idiot director not show Hackett AT ALL throughout the entire first bit of "Ikhnaton", when he is the one soloing? Good grief! I guess they figure, "hey, he's sitting down; no need to show him".
I'm reading a lot of comments about how Peter Gabriel sold out to do commercial disco tracks. Well my interpretation of his actions is that he wanted to produce a commercially successful prog record. A record that rides the fence between radio friendly and avant garde. He tried this method out first with "So" and perfected the idea with "Us". Still, the best example of commercially successfully avant garde record goes to Radiohead for Ok Computer.
some of Peters solo work is progressive 'Blood of eden' 'in your eyes' or 'White Shadow' or his cover of 'Suzzane' But what about 'Steam' and 'sledge hammer' that is Michael Jakson. Steve Hackett is always good. Most of the songs Phil Collin did as a solo artist are Bullshit. Tony Banks and Rutheford have lapsed into obsurity. 'Abacab'& 'Insisible touch' are the only two weak Genesis albums.
@chinwildchicken are you out of your freakin mind one of the most important thing in suppers ready is gabriel deep and changing vocie acording to the son
Nice display of ignorance. Your opinions about PG's solo career and disco both seem based on superficial impressions, "genious."
When you are ready to learn that you were wrong (as condemning entire genres of music usually is) feel free to actually listen to pretty much any PG album (not just the 3 songs you have heard on the radio) and "Get The Funk Out My Face" by Brothers Johnson should be a nice introduction to disco for you.
@MrAugustus88 He did it as any artist to stay on the curve and to be relevant to an audience just as U2 did where many thought they turned Pop they became even more militant in their messages, just more mocking. Peter knows what he does and he works for Art's sake, nothing more, unless it's charity. Don't knock the boots you haven't walked in.
Wow, this is just awesome! Wow we didn't have produce some incredible musicians didn't we? Genesis, The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Faces, Jeff Beck...the list goes on. I struggle to think of many modern musicians that match up to the musicians from the 60s and 70s. What an amazing time for British music it was :-) This song is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Awesome performance, Peter Gabriel is simply, simply...BRILLIANT...I also found his touch of humour so funny, when he says ' A flower?....Une fleur !'...right before proceeding with his song...A way of showing his humour before a French-speaking audience I guess...
Simply, the best band ever assembled really. Peter Gabriel was the engine that drove the whole thing. Hackett, Banks, Rutherford, Collins and Phillips shared his vision which moved rock music to a higher level. Suppers Ready is the proff.
Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!
No, that's not true, it's just that you have to concentrate and think about this music, not like the bubbles and popcorn we get fed by the charts today.
Unforgettable at the IU Purdue cafeteria in 73ish. Less than 1,000 people at this most dynamic concert and all were walking around in a stunned euphoria afterward.
I saw them in Miami in one those old barocque movie theater circa 1972. The costumes, the theme, the theatrics, the 9/8 just friggin stunned me and my friends. These lyrics till move me to this day.
FAR OUT, MAN!!! this is better than the 72 french version. this is truly their crowning achievement along with "the lamb lies down". it brings me back to a specific "trip" and or time in my life when i was 15 or 16 riding 4 wheelers on pyschedelics!!! good times. and the tape(it was 1990 or something!) or i mean cd, of "FOXTROT" is highly recommended, folks!!!
Possibly the most non existent footage of him I've ever seen. What with that, being split into YouTube sized chunks and the crappy sound, how is it that this is still manages to be one of the best videos ever.
Gabriel got the inspiration for the flower mask ( sung during Willow Farm ) from the 50/60s BBC children's programme, Watch With Mother.
Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men was part of this series. In between them there was a character called weed, who was essentially a sunflower. You should watch it - you'll love it. : )
"A flower?" Genius, just genius. I don't care what others think about this song, or if it is good or not, I just know I love it. It's a shame none of my friends would never understand the beauty of this masterpiece.
Hey Fitasc9(?)...douchebaggus maximus...get it? Gabriel may have never been as popular as Genesis, but at least I can stomach his later music vs. the POP shit that Genesis became!!
Peter Gabriel was the "Lord of Lord's, King of King's" when it came to vocals, so all you people who have no idea about the abilities of genuine rock stars , keep your stupid comments to yourself!!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
PG was a cocky arrogant fuck who thought that he was the center of attention. What he found out was that the music was bigger than he was. Genesis did just fine without him. PG never amounted to much post Genesis except for one stupid pop song.
I still remember the moment in which Peter appeared dressed as a flower! Then the Apocalypse, indeed the DELIRIUM! I WAS THERE!

@MrAugustus88

Believe it or not, Gabriel and the rest of Genesis were not big drug heads. Gabriel I think said he tried pot a few times.

No, that's not true, it's just that you have to concentrate and think about this music, not like the bubbles and popcorn we get fed by the charts today.

If Peter Gabriel was the soul of Genesis, the Steve Hackett was definitely the heart of the band.
After Hackett left, Genesis was a band which had it's heart torn out.

What did Steve do to annoy the camera man?!

Peter Gabriel was the "Lord of Lord's, King of King's" when it came to vocals, so all you people who have no idea about the abilities of genuine rock stars , keep your stupid comments to yourself!!!!!

Fish had the best Prog rock voice ever IMO. I would have liked to have seen what he would have done in Genesis.
BTW, I am an objective observer. Not a huge Genesis or marillion fan.
My personal favourites are Trower, Gary Moore and ELP.
This flower outfit is just plain stupid!

PG was a cocky arrogant fuck who thought that he was the center of attention. What he found out was that the music was bigger than he was. Genesis did just fine without him. PG never amounted to much post Genesis except for one stupid pop song.
