Ecachuco, you're missing the point. The World Cup could've been staged, and tourism could've been generated, without building new stadiums. In that way, R12.5 billion could've been spent to build houses and hospitals, instead of leisure facilities for which South Africa has no need. The only winners are FIFA, who take first prize with more in TV earnings than the last two World Cups combined, and, as runners up, South Africa's construction companies with their politically-connected stakeholders.
@bobthefilterpuppy I am not missing the point. South Africa wants to show their capability on the world scale, therefore breaking perceptions about what South Africa can (or cannot) do. Had we not done it, the world would be asking; yes sure they ran a World Cup, but why did everything look like it was 20yrs old, cant they build high tech stadiums like the rest of the world (probably not because they are in Africa) and on and on...
@ecachucho But who does the tourism money go to if South African business are not even aloud to set up shop in and around the stadium; but instead only the multinational corporate sponsors?
See when people put forth arguments like yours, you only cite how much money is being generated in South Africa, but not how much of that money is being accrued to South Africans.
Money's being made, the question is, who's actually getting the money, besides a few SA's getting menial temp jobs?
@ecachucho There is a zone around the stadium, not just in it, where the local vendors are not allowed to sell. Most foriegners aren't renting cars and driving all around the city to go get souveniers.
Ramada and the Hilton aren't owned by South Africans in Soweto, so your hotel example backs my point, not yours.
You simply do not have a conception of the reality. You just want to believe this is a wonderful economic story for Africa. Do a little study on foriegn capital investment.
Where can we see the movie? No TV station in SA will air it. I think that the producers should upload it on to YouTube, to give it the coverage it needs.
Saw the movie again last Sunday night - even more blown away this time round! Really does need to be screened in every country participating in - or considering hosting - a wold cup!
The whole thing is very sad. The country has thousands dying from Aids-related problems, and the government is channelling money into stadiums for a four week tournament.
I get it. People don't have houses or water. The answer - give them a soccer tournament and stadiums that will stand empty afterwards.
I saw this movie at the Durban Film festival. It's excellent. What's most disturbing is how FIFA gets a government to waste billions of desperately needed cash on stadia just so that television shots are pretty.

@bobthefilterpuppy oh and BTW
South Africa spends R900 Billion a year on housing, health and education.
R12 Billion, thats 1.3% of that budget.
1.3%

OK lets get a grip!
Ok so to put the stadium costs into perspective:
SA GDP: R2095 Billion
New Stadium Cost: R12.5 Billion
Tourism % of GDP: 8,6% (2006)
Tourism: R178 Billion
even a 10% increase in our tourism due to 2010 World Cup Would result in and extra: R17.8 Billion

@Yobachi2007 The money being made inside the stadium is nothing compared to what people make outside.
Are you saying that hotels cannot make rooms available.
That restaurants cant sell food to foreigners.
That airlines can't sell tickets.
That people cant buy goods in stores, markets, shopping centers and on the side of the street.
By your account, every foreigner flys into South Africa, sleeps outside the stadium and buys only the terrible fast food available at the stadium.

This should be out there now.
It won't generate much interest after the World cup.
I suggest the filmmaker puts a low fi version on to google video and ask people to spread the word. And they will spread it.
