mmm guys im really worried iv had my 160GB slim for a week now and its been doing this but really quietly on xmb menu and on games :S it this bad? im shitting my pants xS
My ps3 is vibrating when it's reading a game like when I make a goal on FIFA 12 it will do it but it won't stop it will do it often is it normal? I think it started to do this because I unplugged my ps3 when it was turned on because it froze on me please help what should I do?
@xxAZTECxxFIRExx last time i did that, the blu ray laser then stuffed up and it couldnt read games or movies anymore haha it froze and i tried to turn it off and it wouldnt do the 3 beep thing, so i pulled the plug and when i turned it back on the disc wouldnt show up and the circle thing just kept spinning LOL
My PS3 does this occasionally too. I was starting to think that this could have become a big issue later on. It seems like there is nothing to worry about though. I've been having for my PS3 for over 10 months and it's still running fresh.
Mine started doing this too! I was playing nba 2k10 n it started with a beep then the grind/cluck sound and there was a slight lag on my game. Im just worried about my ps3 since i dnt have warranty, its a 160gb ps3 slim
@victor1525 A lot of people have had this, and it seems its nothing more than an annoyance. My PS3 is still running strong, heard that sound last night watching Netflix. I'm not worried about it anymore :P
Noticed this noise on my 160gb slim too. only a few weeks old and done it from day one. Thought it may have been playing games off the hard drive, but it does it with discs too. Still, its under warranty for 1 year, and as long as it doesn't YLOD on me like my 2 phat systems, then I'll live with it.
I also have this exact same issue on my brand new 160GB Slim, and judging from all the comments it seems that it is harmless and may go away on its own. I am now slightly reassured but still kind of worried because I can't take this in for warranty (got it from another country). If anybody could conclusively say what this really is and whether it is truly harmful, that would be nice.
@theanimalcrosser I wish I could give you a definitive answer. But from my personal experience (I think going on a year now) it doesnt do it very often, and hasn't adversely affected my console. One user claimed that when he switched out the hard drive for another, the problem went away. So if you plan on putting in a larger hard drive, let us know what the results are :P
@tofuonophd Thanks for your reply :). If I do anything with the hard drive I'll definately post back but I think I'm fine with it as long as it doesn't affect anything :)
I've had my PS3 for a little over two years now and have heard this sound 3 or 4 times. No idea what it means, but my PS3 is still kicking, knock on wood.
i bought my ps3 slim from target and it makes this same noise. i have until the 31st to exchange it, but is it worth it? or will i just get the same thing in return i mean i dont wanna lose any of my saved games. did you end up replacing yours or is it ok? please answer, thanks a lot!
Yeah I get that noise every now and then and it somewhat worries me. It's annoying because when you read comments from other people who get the same thing it feels reassuring to know that it's pretty common but then someone always has to come along and say that their PS3 never makes any noises, can not be heard even with a stethoscope and is uber quiet after 900 hours and suggests that you replace it immediately before it kills you and your family
@BennettChainmail I find that it mostly happens in the Slim Models. I'm sure it was a large batch of hard drives that were used that were faulty. I've had mine for just about a year now and it still makes the sound, but hasn't effected my PS3 negatively at all. So if it scares you that much, my suggestion is to buy a new hard drive, and see how it works out :P
@tofuonophd Haha nah it only worries me cause the first time you hear it it sounds like something wrong. I haven't had it for the last few days and like you said, it hasn't had any negative effects on mine either. I can't fault people whose ps3's are super quiet and make no noises, it's just the sod's law of it. You read that other people have the problem too and feel assured, then someone says they've never had it and you become unassured. Well, I do haha!
@BennettChainmail When I was researching the sound online i was unsuccessful. Looked on youtube and couldnt find anything that helped. So I decided to make a video and we could all put our minds together. Looks like it worked :P
@tofuonophd iv been hearing the same thing too. it tends to do it when the hdd is being read. i actually started hearing this months ago when i switched in a new harddrive o_o. It hasnt had any negative effect from my knowledge on my ps3 so meh.
@TheLonelyForce I can't possibly see a reason why they would tell you to go into safe mode and do that. Like someone previously stated, its very possible it is the hard drive. A previous poster replaced the hard drive in their PS3 and it stopped the problem.
fixed by changing the internal HDD to the HDD of my old/broken PS3. It seems that some new ps3slims are suffering from faulty internal Toshiba HDD's. Well not really faulty because the disk still works properly but it's just not suppose to make such noises. So lets say it's not healthy instead :)
I've counted this noise 7 times since I got my slim at christmas. 4 of which happened between Dec 23rd and Jan 18th.
Then It ran absolutely fine with no strange noises until march 5th when it happened again, then another time on march 7th. It seems like there is no correlation between what Im doing and the noise occurance, I think I can call it rare.
It's happened durning Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2 and on the XMB (so it must be HDD). It's worrying but doesn't seem to affect anything
@coleohara666 Seems to be a common thing. I hear it every now and then, but hasnt affected my PS3 in any way (other than the issue I had where the audio went out of sync with the video while playing Uncharted 2, but that seems like its an Uncharted 2 only problem)
Got the same, but latey i noticed some kind of "peeling" around the DVD(brand new) whenever I hear that noise. Is this possible or is it just paranoia?
Dude i have the same. Really weird bleep followed by a sound like something is jammed. It only happens with two worlds 2 and dragon age. Maybe a backdrop by the ammount of processes followed in the game. The blue ray laser needs to tilt between layers on the cd. Its harmless but still im worried how long this will last without total failure of the laser.
@MASOFENT It seems like it's fairly normal among Slims. Seems to be relatively harmless, but I have noticed a few games (Uncharted 2 in particular) when the noise happens, it causes the game or cutscene to have out of syn audio. I've only ever had it happen once though.
I had a phat that never made this noise but my slim does it all the freakin' time. I recently got a new slim for my mom and it doesn't make this noise at all.
@tofuonophd I've got the same problem happening, It only happens every so often, But it's rather freaky to hear, But the fact is, I've only started to hear it AFTER i replaced my hard drive, I got a new and bigger harddrive and it started making this noise :S. Honestly, is it really anything to be concerned about?
mine just made that noise while playing uncharted 2. Did you ever figure out what it was? Mines only a week old, and I'll be damned if its already breaking
@gustoThegangsta If you're willing to spend the money to upgrade the hard drive in your slim, I've heard that fixes the problem, but havent confirmed it myself yet.
@619punjabi It isnt a normal sound. I just had it happen very loud today. Kinda made me worried....it hasn't done it for ages....and the BAM! A loud one lol.
I have bought a PS3 and it is 2 weeks old and makes the same noise, it's random and can happen4 or 5 times in a hour or once or twice a day. Has anyone spoke to Sony regarding this issue?

That is the HDD or BD Rom For sure ( What happens with HDD and this happens with PCs too) Is that if it is the HDD the HDD Has become warn out.The Arm begins to slam against the HDD and the grinding sound are the bearings going out in the HDD. Coincidentally does it sound like a laser when it shut down? Also with the BD ROM drive the bearings could be failing and the laser is trying to catch up and it might slam against the edges as well.
@ShutterbugW I know its not the BD Rom because I've had it happen without a disc in the drive after its been on for a bit. I'm leaning towards Hard Drive.
@tofuonophd Well, then don't wait to long, get that thing replaced. I don't recommend trying to update the machine. With the HDD like that. Like Curious Cat said, it needs to be replaced. That is not normal.

@shahidsuri Thats really odd. I'll keep an eye out for that. Anyway, I plan on getting a new hard drive for my PS3 soon, so if it happens again with the new drive, we'll know it isn't a hard drive problem....
@tofuonophd Ok. I can confirm this is from Hard disk as I have tried replacing mine and this weird sound doesn't come any more. I am calling Sony tomorrow for a replacement HD.

Bought this ps3 320 slim since my old one died from the YLOD. Does it too. Sounds like the HDD magnet thingy letting go of the disk.
This might not be true, as I have no exact knowledge on how this works. And I like to pretend that my imagination is right.
