I think Japan is GREAT especially because of the exposure of young girls. The Maids and Anime cafe/bars are a great idea, and no need to deny it, the younger the girls the better it is. I think it has something to do with regrets. Girls in school uniforms represent the childhood of men who couldn't bring out the courage to ask a girl out in high school. They regret their indecision and fear, but they don't know how to channel it positively. Instead of maturely looking at their situation and moving on, they fall back to high school and take advantage of immature girls who don't know any better.

Yes It is somewhat conserning. Being a fan of anime I do tend to notice that the genra for boys or young adults have many school based themes. This is probably fueling these current trends. I'm sure the legal consent age which I believe wasn't unified untill 1999 or 2000. 10 years may seem like a lot at first but it is a drop of water in the bucket where society is conserned. May take a lot more time to thoroughly bleed these trends out.
Hard to recall exactly what they all where but some places in Japan allowed marrage as young as 13. I don't recall exactly where I read this but I'm sure if you googled around you can find many articles pertaning to the subject.

Biologically a person could argue that its as soon as a girl is able to reproduce, although that argument in itself would be flawed since the risks are considerably high when giving birth too young. Personally I don't think its ok to break that barrier, at the current state of society. Perhaps if parents stopped trying to baby their children as long as possible and pushed more responsibilities onto them (as was the case in the past) it would be acceptable at the age of 15, 16, 17.

There does not seem to be a clear line as far as the mature age for drinking. It is a grey/colorful line that gets crossed similar to the grey/colorful line when saying mazzuie. From a biological standpoint, girls aged 13-15 are fertile, so it would not make sense for a man to totally be unattracted. Socially though, they're too young. But barely a century ago, it would not have been unusual for a 15 year old girl to be married. It's just that society evolves quicker than genetics.

Hello, I know I'm a bit late but I wanted to contribute my opinion on the topic nonetheless. Because I'm a teenage guy myself (18) I doubt it would be wrong for someone like me to be attracted to girls of the age and highschool-esque appearance depicted in the newer maid cafe promotional fliers. That having been said, I know that there is something called "lolicon" that is popular among many age groups. Why older men find women my age or younger attractive is a mystery to me, though.
I went to a maid cafe in akihabara. I didnt think it was that bad. It was expensive though. I got my picture taken with two girls ,and I was wearing a pikachu hat during said photograph. What I took from that experience was Japan is silly in a fun way.
Going to a cafe where you are served by young women dressed in school clothes is not bad, its a healthy outlet. Now if its girls serving alcohol in school uniforms under the legal age limit then yes there is something wrong. I went to Akihabara this winter, and noticed the same thing about the maid services and figure shops. It really made me feel uncomfortable. I was super excited to go to Akihabara, because it is very famous among Americans. I went to a really huge electronics shop and it was fun. But when I went on the street, I didn't enjoy it so much. It was kind of disappointing, and seemed demeaning towards women.

I think that as long as everyone is acting of their own accord then there is no harm being done. The workers of the cafés must not mind otherwise they wouldn't be working there. And the regular customers of these places could just as easily be getting their kicks elsewhere, and possibly even be causing harm without these services. I personally am far more attracted to 'old Japan', and would like to go somewhere like Kyoto rather than Tokyo, and I'll most likely never visit Akihabara.

I think it's good for young japanese girls to get a job at such a young age. So they can be more independent and not relying on somebody else's money and have a job experience. I understand that men may like the youthful innocence but not for girls younger than 16-18. That is just disgusting IMO...
I understand the costume part, some costumes make girls look sexy and that's good for business. What I don't understand is younger girls part. The girls should look or have 14-15 years old? But girls that age don't have sex appeal or maturity... That kind of place is only good to attract pervs, and so it is wrong...
To my thinking, it's a combination of marketing to a certain demographic (males who may or may not have certain fetishes) and exploitation of that demographic. Meaning that the customers/individuals who prefer this type of service are more than willing to pay money consistently for the fantasy when (and I'm probably reaching here) the women at these places are only viewing it as a job and nothing beyond that.
Or maybe the women like the fantasy as well, which is a completely different thing..
no matter what the "norm" is, it's pretty close to wrong. it sets the wrong precedent for guys, and only begs guys to continue being stupid. and girls, too, since it advertises women in school uniforms and sets a standard for a culture.
culture is often dependent on what one sees over and over again and what is accepted in said culture. although i'm not Japanese, i wish Japan would stop with the current trends it follows, though i have no say in what happens in Japan because i'm not Japanese.
personally i think its a sign of the lack of emotional growth in the viewers of these types of anime and manga. Its like these people still see themselves as teenagers and don't see a problem with it. i'm sure there are a lot of perverts that are "emotionally mature" (i use the term loosely) that are simply pedophiles.
but like i said the way i see the problem is a lack of maturity in the "adult" males that per sue this content.
Simply and healthly put, the school uniforms are pretty darn cute looking, not connecting it mentally with underaged girls.
About the age thing, yeah its often sickening, as an outsider i only really face anime part of that issue. This to me, seems like they try to "smuggle" pedophiliac contents in less obvious forms. I'd be happy to see this movement destroyed in it's roots.

Yes It is somewhat conserning. Being a fan of anime I do tend to notice that the genra for boys or young adults have many school based themes. This is probably fueling these current trends. I'm sure the legal consent age which I believe wasn't unified untill 1999 or 2000. 10 years may seem like a lot at first but it is a drop of water in the bucket where society is conserned. May take a lot more time to thoroughly bleed these trends out.

If a teen is being bombarded with -and therefore influenced by- sex references everywhere s/he looks, I believe that is a more pressing issue. Not just in Japan, but around the world. Biologically a person could argue that its as soon as a girl is able to reproduce, although that argument in itself would be flawed since the risks are considerably high when giving birth too young. Personally I don't think its ok to break that barrier, at the current state of society. Perhaps if parents stopped trying to baby their children as long as possible and pushed more responsibilities onto them (as was the case in the past) it would be acceptable at the age of 15, 16, 17.

I'm an American male and I feel younger with a younger girl, and older with a mature woman. However I would never do anything inappropriate if a young lady came my way. I'll wait for someone closer to my age otherwise I would be a pervert. A young lady youth is great for my age, but I think I must rather have an older woman for her wisdom.

Personally, I am attracted to younger girls... well I'm 26 and most girls my age have had their hearts bruised.
There does not seem to be a clear line as far as the mature age for drinking. It is a grey/colorful line that gets crossed similar to the grey/colorful line when saying mazzuie. It is nothing one would want to say to a girlfriend, because it's disrespectful. If the media crosses the disrepectful/ugly line, then the public won't (shouldn't) be attracted to buy the magazine.

I completely agree with you that it's wrong but from what I know through research Japan will not be changed and no one will protest.
If you want to do something about it why don't you organize a protest (It is wrong so someone needs to stand up and say no)? I will come out and join you when I finish college if you decide to go ahead with it. ( if you want a westerners help, could be seen as disrespectful and lose support for the cause though :P )

From a biological standpoint, girls aged 13-15 are fertile, so it would not make sense for a man to totally be unattracted. Socially though, they're too young. But barely a century ago, it would not have been unusual for a 15 year old girl to be married. It's just that society evolves quicker than genetics.

You're correct that they're still in puberty, but that doesn't mean the chance of conception is zero in all cases. However it can lead to serious complications because of their lack of physical maturity at that age.

Hello, I know I'm a bit late but I wanted to contribute my opinion on the topic nonetheless. Because I'm a teenage guy myself (18) I doubt it would be wrong for someone like me to be attracted to girls of the age and highschool-esque appearance depicted in the newer maid cafe promotional fliers. That having been said, I know that there is something called "lolicon" that is popular among many age groups. Why older men find women my age or younger attractive is a mystery to me, though.

I went to a maid cafe in akihabara. I didnt think it was that bad. It was expensive though. I got my picture taken with two girls ,and I was wearing a pikachu hat during said photograph. What I took from that experience was Japan is silly in a fun way.

Going to a cafe where you are served by young women dressed in school clothes is not bad, its a healthy outlet. Now if its girls serving alcohol in school uniforms under the legal age limit then yes there is something wrong. In the past in most cultures girls were married off/sexually active between ages of 12-18 because people didn't survive past 40 or so. Btw I am female. Also I would be more uncomfortable seeing people serving nude or something. :)

I went to Akihabara this winter, and noticed the same thing about the maid services and figure shops. It really made me feel uncomfortable. I was super excited to go to Akihabara, because it is very famous among Americans. I went to a really huge electronics shop and it was fun. But when I went on the street, I didn't enjoy it so much. It was kind of disappointing, and seemed demeaning towards women.

i'm from germany visited a maid café for fun last year.
all those small maids looked certainly like about 16(-) years old, but they weren't sexy/attractive at all - but quite funny.
so for me (and maybe a lot of other foreigners) i consider a maid café to be more like a place with crazy girls doing funny stuff.

The outfits themselves would be sexy for most guys I know. It would be a very enjoyable experience, I think. It does associate these girls with school because of the clothes ,but if they're of age it's hot, I see nothing wrong with it.
As for the ones where girls must look real young like 13-16, that's really disturbing. If business is booming for them then I'd question my culture(not to offend,I love Japan). The anime styled cafes seem a bit to much IMO.

I think that as long as everyone is acting of their own accord then there is no harm being done. The workers of the cafés must not mind otherwise they wouldn't be working there. And the regular customers of these places could just as easily be getting their kicks elsewhere, and possibly even be causing harm without these services. I personally am far more attracted to 'old Japan', and would like to go somewhere like Kyoto rather than Tokyo, and I'll most likely never visit Akihabara.

I think it's good for young japanese girls to get a job at such a young age. So they can be more independent and not relying on somebody else's money and have a job experience. The problem with Japanese ways of putting their female to work is kind of strange because schoolgirls are for going to school not for serving alcohol or sex and maids are for cleaning and doing house stuff. It's just bizarre is like using garlic toothpaste to brush your teeth with or adding salt into your coffee.

I'll get to that after I answer the question: The clothing is of little importance, what makes me want to revisit that certain cafe is the treatment. Regarding the age group I'm attracted to, it would be around my own (20).

As a woman from the USA I never had a problem with the maid cafes and I even could understand why men would be drawn to them. Cute, younger women, serving and being happy... The girlfriend experience. But I seriously have a problem with the schoolgirl one. Even if it is for "fantasy" it still encourages lust for underage children IMO. I understand that men may like the youthful innocence but not for girls younger than 16-18. That is just disgusting IMO...

To my thinking, it's a combination of marketing to a certain demographic (males who may or may not have certain fetishes) and exploitation of that demographic. Meaning that the customers/individuals who prefer this type of service are more than willing to pay money consistently for the fantasy when (and I'm probably reaching here) the women at these places are only viewing it as a job and nothing beyond that.
Or maybe the women like the fantasy as well, which is a completely different thing..
