we felt that earthquake here it was crazy. i thought it was either our washer because that's off balance when the spin cycle is going but then I realized I had no laundry going at that time, then I thought it was a Truck coming down the hill because some of the heaver loaded ones can make our trailer shake. Then when I saw the news on Facebook I was shocked that that's what happened.
I feel that I have been being pushed to do more too, and I would like to ask you, how many canning jars do you feel are necessary for your storage? How long are you storing for? and have you ever used Tattler canning jar lids? I have them, but have not used them yet and wondered if you have any experience with them. Thank you, Sheila
Laurie- we have a similar block and board shelf system set up and what I'm doing to keep jars from sliding off shelves is using box lids or cutting boxes down to have a 2 or 3 inch lip and setting the jars in them on my shelves. Might go one step further and put rubber shelf lining under them so they never slide. You can get plenty of empty boxes w a lip from grocery aisles that the food is gone from. I do it all the time - store is happy to give them away. Super cheap and easy!
I was wondering what program you are using for the one-year storage...that would be a huge help to me! I can tell you right now that I'm probably deficient in everything, but the list will help direct me on the path I need to go...thanks!
@lauriegirl2 - Great ideas for storage shelves. I really like the idea of having a lip at the end to keep them from sliding off. Keep up the great work. Thank you for referencing the stockupfood website and I am glad it has been useful in your food storage preparation! Please let me know anything we can do to improve! :)
My super duper, extra special friend Katzcradul sent me. I have subbed. I agree with you about that "ill feeling" you speak of. That little voice that just keeps telling you to do more. I don't feel like I will ever feel completely satisfied with what I am doing. I love your storage and feel blessed that we are able to share with others like this. Keeps us all sane (a little). Thank you for sharing. I look forward to more vids from you. Noreen : )
It's best to keep the jars of food in the original cardboard boxes the jars came in with the cardboard partitions in the box to protect them from breakage. The boxes will also protect the food, in clear jars, from the light. Light greatly speeds up the deterioration of foods. The glass jars will break on a concrete floor even when falling a distance of a few inches or even when they bang against each other or the concrete wall behind them in an earthquake. Looking forward to your future videos!
wow... you have done so much in less than a year! and your storage looks great.... i am in so md and we got the quake too needless to say... tried to convince hubbie to put slats across our shelves... he did not like that idea, but moving them lower would definitely help and the cinder blocks are a great idea! tkx... looking forward to more...
I had no idea you had a channel...did I? I subbed. Wow! What a lot of work you've done. I know you must just feel terrific at what you've accomplished. It looks amazing. I think you're so blessed with your prompting to prepare. One of the sayings around our house is, "God loves preppers!" I believe it. I wish you'd submit this as a video response to my 'Earthquake Precautions'" video that I posted on 5/16. I'd love to post it. Great video!
I live in VA too about 15 miles from Mineral and did loose a half dozen jars of this season's canning. It could have been worse, as I was about ready to start double stacking them, I've now changed my mind on that since the eq and plan to strap them to the shelf, just haven't figured out what i'm going to use yet. Lookin good thanks for sharing.
You're doing a great job. I'm in VA too so I haven't considered earthquakes either. One thing that I do with my food storage that might be an advantage in an earthquake situation is I store all of the jars I've canned in their cardboard boxes on the shelves. This video has made me realize that a case of jars may be less likely to shake off a shelf than individual jars. Hope it helps.
Its a good idea to move your jars lower. Less loss and glass if there was another good size trembler. Living in California and near the San Andreas Fault, ours looks much the same. Love the before and after views!
Your hard work has certainly paid off. Your storage room is great!! That is on my list of things to get done. Turning an old bedroom into storage and Hubby is going to build me some shelves. I can't wait because right now, I have no idea what all I have and don't have. Thanks for sharing and letting me know you put up a video. I look forward to more!
WOW! That's alot of food, I'm sooooo jealous! I'm guessing you would be a great resource for a new canner like myself. Lol hopefully I won't make you crazy with all my questions. Awesome Idea on the shelving too. Sadly I have that same urgency feeling in my guts as well, makes me crazy some days. But I'm just going to keep the faith that I can get a grasp on things. Wonderful first video!
also thank you for sharing the link to that site you use. i just got to that part of the video. going to share it now with some of my friends :D
