  • I first saw Sad Cafe at Belle Vue and later at the Davenport and Apollo where the live album was recorded - can't believe it's not been released on CD as I'm sure there are many like me who've almost worn out the vinyl copy!

  • @stew398 Yup, I was at those three two - think we also went somewhere else - Bolton or Oldham. I remember my friend getting thrown out as she jumped on the stage and kissed Paul Young!! It was brill!!

  • Amazing Guitar player!!

  • Someone, somewhere must have the recording of Sad Caff doing this on Granada, when Paul wore that floppy hat,

Come on Dave, you can find it I'm sure, even though you weren't in the band then.

  • Thankyou for posting 5* and fav

  • Comment removed

  • many years ago i watched then on the bbc show rock go,s to collgue very good,,,

  • one of my fav songs ,, yes who was the model .. and they were the cream of Manchester

  • Bunch of fags.

  • youre a dick bird

  • I remember after "Every Day Hurts" too. There were families in the audience and it felt weird if you know what I mean. Felt like I'd lost something special. Even so the song was good but we lost them somehow

  • That's right JRB! The band didn't sell out, the audience just changed. Us rockers were still there.

  • Never forget when I first heard this on Granada Reports, when Tony Wilson had his own little music spot. Went out and bought Fanx Tara the next day on the strength of this and was not disappointed. Saw the band live 3 times - Belle View, Apollo and somewhere in Birmingham (that was after they'd hit the big time with Everyday Hurts-place was full of luvvy duvvies who thought all their stuff was like that! Had to laugh, we were all bopping in the aisles).

  • Always thought this was a strange choice for a single. Remeber you on Magapie too.

  • Best song on this album is "Restless"

    wish someone would post it

  • God Bless Paul and keep him as he was forever. I sat in the front row watching and hearing amazing music but Paul was iconic. He was the best thing for Mike and The Mechanics (after Sade Cafe of course). As you can tell I miss him something awful. Went through both phases and always thought he deserved much more recognition than he got.

  • Thankyou for posting

  • Dave I - if you are reading this - who was that model on the front of the first album ? Her face has been so much a part of my youth over the years, whatever happened to her ?

  • Underated band underated guitarist - saw them at Wigan Casino in March 78 still have the pics, still have my copy of Fanx Ta-Ra

  • Ashley Mulford has to be thee most underated guitarist of all time!!

  • Thanks for these Dave! - Saw Sad Caf at the Davenport Theatre, Stockport just after the Granada thing I remember, then at the M/Cr Apollo. Fantastic memories! -Thanks again.

  • What pleasant change to hear a band that writes songs with more than 3 or 4 chords in them! They could teach the young bands of today a thing or two.

  • more g8 stuff, bring it on

  • Hi Dave. Thank you for all the hard work you do in keeping the Sad Cafe story going. Saw you guys many times, the first was at a club called Jenks Bar in Blackpool, the place was packed solid. The ultimate has to be the Manchester Apollo gigs, surely deserves to be released on CD, anything in the pipeline?, and what ever happened to the live performance that was shown on Granada?. Keep at it Dave, your efforts are much appreciated. Regards, John. Paul, a true vocal genius, Rest In Peace.

  • Dave,i saw Sad Cafe play twice at Halifax and Bradford University.Halifax was a great gig but when we saw you at Bradford,it was like someone had forgot the amps or turned them down. The band wasn't the same and lacked energy.Did someone decide the amplification was too loud and go for a more laid back sound or was it a one off?

By the way, always loved this song, great band!

  • This band were really good live, one of the best I've ever seen (and I've seen 'em all). Excellent BV's too. Are there any nice quality DVDs available?

Just realised, you're the Dave Irving who played the drums - doh!

1st saw SC at a venue called 'The Venue' (I think) in Victoria, London. Dave; Paul split his red leather trousers on stage - do you remember? I fear you had the best view...

  • I saw these guys at The Liverpool Empire in the mid 70's they were truly great.Totally unknown over here in Canada though, like so many great Brit bands!

  • We did chart in US and Canada 79 and toured. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver etc. Song called 'Run Home Girl'. No 1 in Seattle would you believe! Great times.

  • Wow that's wicked. When I saw your band play in Liverpool the drummer was using a Fibes kit, sounded great. Was that you?.

And the keysman had an old Elka string machine type keyboard I think,I was impressed with the power and atmosphere.

    Cheers mate,this is cool

    I'm a drummer too actually.

  • Yep I'm the Fibes man. That was a cool kit - wish I still had it. Cheers on the comments m8. You play drums full time?

  • hey Dave, thanks for getting back.I used to play full time over here in Canada(was born in Cheshire).I play on weekends now.

    What do you play now?

  • Kit? Have a Tama Starclassic Performer and assorted Zildjians.

You wanna chat use daveirving 'at' sadcafe co uk

(Have replaced email ampersand etc as this site wont allow emails/url stuff in postings - strange)

  • Thanks Dave will send you a note that way

    cheers

    BHF

  • @beagleheadfred I did too. What a great show. :)

  • I think I got it wrong - Maybe it was Poco;-)) sorry guy N' gals

  • was this group inspired or helped by some members of the Eagles ?? I heard it once that they were influenced by the Eagles !

  • Eagles have a song on one of their albums with Sad Cafe in the title. Maybe we had some influence on them! We certainly did with Toto for sure. Poco - No No!

  • Wow were you really in Sad Cafe? which one are you?.I can't remember who was who.

  • the drummer

  • I got the Live album but would like to no where can I get dvds or live cd this music still sounds good after all these years,

  • see the Cafe website

  • Great track - Fanx Ta Ra is one of my all time fav albums, I actually roadied for a few weeks with Sassafras when you toured Fanx Ta Ra with them (Liverpool Stadium I think) - Great shows

  • great to see black rose performed again, dont suppose you have a copy of the set you did on the old grey whistle test featuring hungry eyes. Just been playing Fanx ta ra over and over again great album

wonderful vocals from Paul..god bless his soul

  • PS Working on a version of 'On with the Show' from a live beeb (but dont tell them as they might put the kneecap squad on me)

  • Will watch for it...My wife of 20 years, (and who is American), thinks you and the lads on this track sound like the Atlanta Rhythm Section...! Many thanks again.

  • Dave, thanks for finding this and putting it up. As a kid I always thought it was 'Keep taking the back roads', which actually would make some sort of sense about a break-up..! Love the song, hope everythings OK under the viaduct. Many thanks, cheers mate.

  • Hi Moved from the viaduct to a train subway as I prefer the smell of stale piss to meths

You were right about 'back roads' - that's the verse. Chorus as yknow is 'black rose'

    Best 2 ya bud

    Dave
