Lol..I attempted to sing your Timothy Wright recording many, many years ago at a local church...Didnt do TOO bad..but this..well...cant touch it. Go on with your bad self! I cant wait to see you win on The Voice!
Everyone has their own opinion and mines is : Jesse Campbell can beat Whitney singing. I feel she is GREATLY OVERRATED. she has released some great music and does have a great singing voice but she doesn't do anything others really can't do. And for the record, her version is my favorite performance because of the orchestral instruments.
Personally, I think he like a lot of other people who think by adding in all these voice inflections are completely disrespecting the song when they sing the song and change the notes or add all these voice inflections. If you can't sing the song the way Frances Scott Key wrote it, then politely decline to sing it in front of a large audience. After all, we as Americans get pissed when we see someone burning the US flag and we should feel the same way when someone desecrates our nat'l anthem.
When Frances Scott Key wrote this, it was not a song. It was a poem. Neither was it the national anthem. It was simply a poem about the flag after the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. When music was finally put to this poem, it was surprisingly set to the tune of an old British drinking song. It was again music that men got drunk to, basically like "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall". There is absolutely nothing sacred about the traditional rendition of this song at all.
@30Silas, listen to Whitney Houstons version several years ago. She sang the song without all the shit added and Americans went bonkers over the way she sang it. Nobody but a fool would buy this clowns version.
@greg8698 Once again Whitney sang it in her note and her way, Just like he's singing his note and his way.....each artist does their way to their note......so stop being ignorant..if U dont like Jesse's version just say it..but dont call him a clown....
@30Silas -Jesse's rendition was great! However, an issue he has always had as an artist was the inability to know when to infuse gospel and r&b. (hence his struggles to find an audience) Keep in mind, I like this version, but it may not be for everyone. Whitney's was more classical, thereby having a mass appeal. Even Marvin Gaye's soulful version was excellent, but then again, not for everyone. Jesse came a tad bit strong at the end. Still tho', way better than Kim Stratton the night Obama won.
Usually women sing this and eat it, so for a man (especially black man) to sing this and SLAM dunk it the way Jesse did, jus made me love Jesse the more!!!
I was there and I could not believe what I was hearing. Oh my goodness. I don't think it's ever been sung like that SINCE, and can never be done like that again!!!!

By adding a "gospel" feel to this, Jesse Campbell actually gave it more respect than the original performers.
Great Job, Mr. Campbell!
BTW, I've followed your career since "Master Can You Use Me" and "We Must Work". Awesome gift!
