  • Oh really good, your sound is like Sonny Terry!

  • can somebody help me out.. i just bought a marine band lowD harmonica, and the number 1 hole inhale has a nasty rattling screehing noise. almost as if the reed is touchin somthing in there and the metal is scratching.

is this normal? how do i fix the problem. or should i just bring it back to the store i bought from.

none of my cheaper harmonicas do this, only when i inhale super hard can i get even close to the nasty tone coming out of this lowD. please help. i think it's a flaw, but not sure.

  • @Drafter3 yes you have a flaw. The Marine Bands have decreased in price and in quality. The wood comb or composite is now attached with small nailes to the reed plates instead of with screws. If you try to modify it or tune it it may warp while you are working on it. It is shoddy workmanship. Take it back and get something in real wood, plastic or metal comb. The new mass production Marine Bands are no longer worth the money. In my opinion.

  • cool. thanks buddy. i did return it already, kinda bummed about it tho because i have a set of cheap harmonicas, and three "big river harps". (returned the "marine band" and got a low d "big river harp". but i was thinking, hey ill get a nicer harmonica for a bit extra money, and unfortunately this purchase has kinda swayed me from wanting to invest the extra money for something nicer. ill have to research before my next purchase i guess.

the "big river harps" are pretty good i think. thanks :)

  • oh, and by the way, yes i noticed the nails.. poor choice i thought, on hohners part. for ten bucks less i get a "big river" that has screws.

any suggestions on what i should look into for my next harp purchase? altho 20-30 bucks isnt that much to spend on these things, it does add up. and since this incident, im nervous to try out other harps.. and especially nervous to think about upgrading to a more expensive one.

    thanks again.

  • I started playing three years ago and I have gone through a few different types. Marine Bands just don't last as most others do not. Brass reeds just don't hold up over time. Its just the way it goes. If you spend $100 you can get a Seydel 1847. they are great harps and i have never had problems even with the brass reed types. I use the silver with steal reeds. good luck.

  • search for this on You tube

    "Suzuki Harpmaster and Bluesmaster"

The bluesmasters are about $30.00 but worth it. Or the "promaster MR350". $45.00 each. Careful though don't get confused with the MR350v they're valved.

  • Great, I loved it!

  • Great! And definitely Sonny-Terry-ish around the 1:30 mark.

  • Great beat, wonderful riffs and unbelievable breath control. I would like to hear this progress into a "solo" then return to the "chorus" to finish.

  • Thanks Adam for all that you've done for me and my learning. I'm getting there slowly and I couldn't have done it without your help.

  • Thank you for dropping that bit of TOTAL AWESOMENESS on us Adam!!!

  • Hey Adam let us know whenever you're coming down to South Florida. Specifically we would love to hear you over at Buzz's on the Thursday Blues Jam. Peace Bro.

  • DAMN I wish I was more on top of my subscriptions and watched this video when it came out instead of a week later -- I would have loved to see you play live at Cornelia Street Cafe. (I just added my name to your distribution list on ModernBluesHarmonica so I don't miss future NYC gigs.)

  • Very nice. I hear Sonny Terry vibes in there. Come back to Tuscaloosa.

  • Wow! That was SO cool Dr Adam! Makes me want to go practice. . .

  • Adam - this is kick ass! Beat too loud or not - it's still kick ass!

  • awesome!!! congratulations from Chile!!

  • Adam, I love it. That's the best shit I've ever heard you play. You know what you're doing. Mute the drum? Pshaw!

  • Guess what, I love the foot drum, the tambourine and the playing of the harp. It gave me goosebumps. I only dream to get to that level where nothing else matters, just pleasing yourself. Short video but packed with action. Another one of my favorites is the one where you are on a porch and playing really slow...You rule man!

  • If I didn't know better I would say you were hiding Sterling McGee off camera! Great work!!

  • WOW. that knocks me out. can`t be better.

  • Blow Boy!, Blow!!

  • I can feel it!!!!!!!!

  • I'M COMING TO SEE YOU TOMORROW IN MANHATTAN. I hope you have time for me to thank you in person with a drink and a hug. After that, I'll let Santa off the hook because THAT's all I want for Christmas.

    - Jim

  • I thought I was excellent! Thankyou very much Adam! and a very Merry Christmas!!

  • Adam, lots of energy as always. Not crazy about the foot drum, is there a way to mute it a bit?

  • I'm so glad you said that. You know what? I love the foot drum. For the first time in my life, in this video, I'm just playing the music that's in me--very much as Sterling Magee played stuff that some people weren't crazy about, since it was so loud, raw, and crazed. I used to apologize for him, believe it or not. Then I realized that the only thing a musician can finally do is please himself. If others are pleased, great. If they're not crazy about it......That's them.

  • It's not that the foot drum is bad, it's that the mic on the video camera gets drowned out by in making the harp in the background, where it should be in the foreground...

  • cool haha

  • sonny terry is in the House! inspirational, as always.

  • DAMN Adam, I LOVE the Woodshed Shred

  • Super playing Adam! Liked it a lot!

  • haha Thing of beauty sir!

  • Singing like the birds!

  • great!

  • Love this!! Adam since I know you like criticism, I think you speed up a little between 1:00 and 1:08 or so. There is something that feels a bit ankward. Thanks for the video!!

  • This is a little snippet of my d-cking around in the woodshed. It's not supposed to be a polished performance. It's the opposite of a polished performance. I'm sure it veers wildly in many directions. It's made up of a series of starts and stops.

  • hoooraa!

    wailing as per usual!

  • love it! adam once again, show;s his greatness.

  • Yes, this is definitely taking that fast, jug-stomp, in-out-in-out Sonny Terry country-blues harp style into this millennium! Those licks are transformed by the amplification... The notes get hairier, and the fast riffs are more blended. IMO, I like it better amped like this than acoustic like Sonny always did it... I liked the whoops too! Not over done... The foot drum stomp is definitely a Gussow touch, and there are several very identifiable "Gussow" riffs in there! You keep things movin man!

  • Haha, Adam is howling and hooting^^

Love this Sonny Terry stuff. Great!

  • My head is spinnin !!! Great stuff !! See you in Philly !!

  • Very Sonny Terry.

  • Yes, the rhythm in the middle part is from a Sonny Terry song called "Poor Man Blues" or something like that. He plays it on a B harp--unusual key. The high note thing and the beginning and the melody in the last third are something I made up about 20 years ago. The rhythm in the last third is a different Sonny Terry rhythm from a cut called "Sonny's Squall." But yes, your ears are correct! I'm updating Sonny Terry, amped and with footdrums...........

  • Ha, I was referring specifically to Sonny's Squall, too.

Love the hoopin and hollerin. I need to get myself some foot drums.

  • I love the transition @:46

    gave me goosebumps.

  • Merry Christmas Adam :)

  • WOW!

    That blew me away!

I'm suddenly awake now, that was AWESOME!

  • ah great stuff Adam I love your harmonica lessons you taught me everything. apart from the lessons Adam you should put more of your music on youtube sounding great

  • Man you're good on harmonica. I'm from Slovenia and in my town there are no harmonica teachers or players so youtube is my teacher for now. Now I'm playing for 4 months and thanks to you I'm getting a hang of it.

  • That's rhythm if I ever heard it. Nice.

  • yeha! great! i really enjoyed it! :D

  • You never cease to impress people!

Very sweet Adam.you have the gift and we are so lucky to have found you on youtube.

God bless you for all you have given us.

Merry Christmas to you and your's.

  • Since you started using the foot drum, I hope you are still running because it sounds like you have to be in shape to all this simultaneously! You got the rhythm and the Blues! Marry Christmas to you, or as we say in Iceland: Gleðileg jól!

  • When you're done with the East Coast go West. Would love to have you in Portland, Oregon.

  • East Coast. . . .bah!

When are you coming West? Specifically SF Bay Area?

Biscuits and Blues would book you i'm certain.

  • Sounds great. At 20 seconds though it sounds like maybe your whoop got caught in the effect you had on the harp. The ones before that sounded cleaner.

I love that foot pedal for that. Is there any way to change the pitch on it for different effects or do you need multiple foot drums?

And now I'm off to practice to more of your lessons!

  • Ahh! Adam "Sonny Terry" That was cool.

  • yes!!!!!!!!

  • Cool! I love it.

  • very good, enjoyed it

  • this is great! so great, it actually pisses me off a little...hahaha!

i've been playing for 3 months and your videos have been my biggest inspiration.

I hate to be an ass kisser, but you have a great musical thought process.

Happy Holidays to you and your family.
