I don't know if you have a 10mm but double tap just introduced a imposed load. Its a hollow point sitting on top of a lead ball. the lead ball hits 1" high at 25 yards on every shot.
Ranger t's .45acp are a fail. Was recomended to me by my partner and shot a 100 ROUNDS in series of denim and balistics gell and Only 5 actually opened up, OUT OF A 100 all they are is a FMJ with a bigger punch. They clog and dont expand like Hornady critical defense. You can sit there and shoot water and get impressed by its "expantion" but in a real life situation your just shooting FMJ's. Waste of my money Im sticking to my Hornady CD that has that 99% expantion rate.
The 9mm in this round is hot. I shot a 100 lbs pit bull that was killing my dog with it. One shot fired from a Glock 26 went in the left rear rib cage and out the right front neck, chest area(unfortunately). The pit actually walked across the street and into its backyard to die. I didn't get to check out the damage myself, the responding cop told me of the bullet holes. Good riddance.
@thatguy66ish I'm following you now. I miss interpreted your comment and thought that you chose to use 9mm, not that it was the only convenience to you. I guess thats why you were using a Glock 26 too, they makem' in .40 but wouldn't recommend em' they have a nice little snap to it. I wasn't talking down to your Glock btw I love Glock, great CCW. I was saying that a 1911 would be better or a good lil 22LR.
@USAApproved No probs, It was a hot day out and my full frame G21 or my similar sized H K USP .45 were both too big for ccw's. I have the G27 too and you're right the bang is a lot. I don't shoot it much but it is kept in a drawer for emergencies. I will probably be getting a compact .45 with the great l.e. pricing though.
Awsome, I actully have a box that someone gave me, I had no idea, thanks for the vid. Any one hit with this is going to bleed out in no time, ouch. Is there a liability issue? I've been carring the 230 Fed hydrashok in my 1911.
I would love to use these for self defense but the only problem is that the super libs on jury duty that day would feel sorry for the scumbag that got shot with these and lock you up for using a " non-friendly round".
@cartman934life Hmmm... I would tend to say that any competent lawyer would easily defeat this argument using the same logic. All they have to do is get a few agencies that use them on the stand and explain that they are the best for the agency and then argue why would a civilian not want what the local police are using? If it is good enough and appropriate for a law enforcement agency then why is it not good enough and appropriate for a civilian to use to protect his family?
@cartman934life - After you shoot someone in self-defense, always look to find or already know a good lawyer. Lawyer makes the biggest difference (unfortunately) as justice is based on presentation.
@ThePoisonYouth ?? I am a troll for saying I was told the NRA helps find you a lawyer when you are forced to defend yourself? I think you may be projecting.
@cartman934life. IN agreement with andreleger2001, any judge/jury that sees that you've used a defensive hollow point round instead of some cheap full metal jacket round, like most crooks, shows that you've put thought into having to use your weapon, and that you chose to use safer ammo. Here's the key to not getting sued: Fire once in center mass, then fire again in the head. Criminal's dead, you tell the court it was self defense (act like killing the guy was traumatic to you), and go home.
@cartman934life i agree that the defense would use the aggressive shape of the bullet after expansion to try and make you look like a sick SOB.... But if it was me on the stand I'd smile and say "it was either that round or buy the MUCH cheaper FMJ's and have them go through the punk I shot and into whoever was behind him who i was trying to protect in the first place... so i though what the hell I'll pay $1 a round instead of 0.30$ a round"
@cartman934life I understand your concern but jhp should be explained to be bullets with brakes. That's how law enforcement gets to carry them. If a bullet over penetrates there are going to be unnecessary consequences so hollow points are the way to go. Super libs are more of a societal evil than welfare mothers.
@jmkpns Winchester just decided to make these 'law enforcement only' loads. In my opinion they are the best that Winchester has to offer. It would seem that they would be in the business of selling ammunition, not writing pseudo laws to restrict their sales volume. There may be some backroom deal that we are unaware of. They are still available to anyone if you look for them hard enough.
@andreleger2001 - I buy lots of Winchester Ranger ammunition from Miwall @ the gunshows. Back in 2009, 45acp Winchester Ranger was $216 for 500 rounds. Today, much much more. I also use Winchester Ranger 00 Buckshot and slugs.
@jmkpns To answer your question, in this particular case the talons and the more advanced design over conventional jacketed hollow points. They expand well, hold their weight for deeper penetration, and potentially cause more tissue damage with the talons. Perhaps Winchester is weary from the bad press storm of the original black talons and decided to restrict this design. Also law enforcement rounds undergo a more thorough quality control inspection so that every round passes.
@jmkpns I have some PDX1 for .45 ACP in my test bin for the next session. From what I have seen it appears that the PDX round is basically a bonded version of the Ranger-T with the talons filled with lead. I will post the results after the test.
I actually found some T's for 9mm at my gun store but all they had was +p+ and I dont know if I should shoot those out of my sigma so i just got some Golden sabers +p, Im happpy with them.
THIS IS NO JOKE... I put 5 rounds of Ranger T through my new Kimber TLE / RL the target was 75 yards or 225 feetdown range. It was a typical white piece of typing paper with a 2 1/2" bullseye. 2 rounds went in the bullseye 1 round was at 10 O'clock 3" from dead center. 1 round was at 1 O'clock and 3 3/4" from dead center and the 5th round was 8 o'clock and 5" from dead center. I know I moved a little bit on the last one. I haven't shot a pistol since 1987... These rounds are AWESOME for accuracy
I really think that Winchester is making some of the best defensive rounds available on the market today. The only thing Ive noticed is that the petals on the Ranger-T series seem to over expand in my 5in barreled 1911a1...
The 230gr PDX1 seems to be a very good performer all around as well.
@PoliticoJake no I meant over expand. The pedals on this round were designed to fold back at a near perpendicular angle to the main body of the round. At this point you get maximum expansion and optimum conditions for the most damage to be done. In my 1911a1 the pedals will over expand and bend backward, nearly touching the main body of the round on the back side. Therefore the round isnt properly expanded and optimum damage isnt possible.
Now thats impessive carry ammo... the expanded peddles are like blades and has pretty good expantion for a .45 ACP. The weight retention probably isn't bad either... thanks for the vid!
@adamjaw123 No. There are no laws that I know of (except maybe local laws) that state you cannot own these as a citizen. However Winchester is restricting sales to dealers who comply with their silly rules. As of late, they have been cracking down on its enforcement. But, once it gets in dealers hands they can do what they want with it. You can find it, you just have to look harder until the market lightens up.
I fired this new t-series round into wetpack out of a 5 inch 1911 and i'll tell you what this is one nasty round, the lot i got seemed to be loaded really hot for standard pressure rounds i dont have a chronograph but i would guess they were very close to or a bit over 900 fps, the expanded bullet i recovered was a bit more flattened out up front and the "talons" werent as folded back and it still penetrated pretty well, makes a 124 gr 9mm gold dot look tiny and that is a good round
I would take the Ranger-T over the Black Talon. The Ranger-T series is the redesigned talon. Winchester made the talons larger and stronger. In addition, the legendary name of Black Talon makes finding supplies of them nearly impossible. They have not been produced since winchester stopped production i think in the late 80's. Stick with the modern version.
The only rule of only selling to law enforcement was made by winchester. There are no federal laws prohibiting the purchase or ownership of this ammo as far as I know. If you can find a dealer that sells it then you can buy it.
really want to thank you , hadnt heard of them before and i just ordered 5 boxes through ammosphere and was really happy as well. shipped well and fast , and beyond fair pricing.
these new t-series are different than the sxt they have longer much stronger talons i have a few boxes in 9mm and some of these badboys but i wanted to see more testing of this new t series before i trusted them, this test looks good but ive seen others that dont seem so great

Maybe a little bit sharper, I wanted to wait till we did a straight water test on the ranger-t's and then I will do a close comparison test. This ranger-t went through several jug walls. I think that may have had an influence on its apperance. I can make one with this one and the black talon if you would like me to.

They may be politically incorrect. Still quite effective. I think this and the Federal HST are the best 2 rounds available. I guess thats why they are both marketed as 'law enforcement only' ammo. They wouldn't want us peasants to have the best bullet technology now would they...
Would this expand in a 3.5 inch barrel? (Glock 30 SF)?
