  • Listen to this through on full blast through headphones, the assortment of instuments layered upon eachother coming from different sides of the earpieces and with his beautiful voice.. ughh, it's just truley magical!

  • This is a great song

  • "She lifts her skirt up to her knees,

walks through the garden rows with her bare feet, laughing.

I never learned to count my blessings,

I choose instead to dwell in my disasters"

    amazing meaning

  • "Outside the rain is tapping on the leaves. To me it sounds like applauding us; the quiet love we've made."

The best line in a song. Ever. I love the beginning too. He talks about how happy and carefree she is, but he can't seem to let go of his pain from the past and join her in her joy. Looooove it. -3

  • Im totally in the place now that ray is painting with this song. I feel Its a sort of an ode to surviving, and learning to live on even in the worst of times, holding onto the hope that better days are ahead, But wondering when that day will dawn. Life has a way of dragging you down, and then you think of all that had been Good But underappreciated. You swear it will be different If life gets better. Im trying so hard to spread my bedraggled wings and fly.

  • . ..isn't this song worth living for?. ..it lets us stop for a while, contemplate, go somewhere deeper down inside in us where great things are.. .I feel a lot of love just by listening to Ray's stuff. It's truly amazing!

  • One of the most poetic songs I have ever heard in my life. I could listen to this any time of day and just stop and let the world roll by

  • Thumbs up if you have no fucking idea what the conspirator is and are here because Ray Lamontagne is musical God.

  • just finished cing the conspirator....looove it n i was surfing the web like never b4 to find this song n :) found it.

  • Thumbs up for passive-aggressive youtube comments.

Amazing song, not something I would think I would like, Tool is my favorite band, but this is just beautiful

  • i've never seen the conspirator but this song is my favorite song ever. The lyrics and music are perfectly correlated to set the mood.

  • Don't even know what The Conspirator is? I don't watch television. It is bad for your mind.

  • @effedupcamel

It's a film based on the true story of Lincolns assassination. Great film.

  • fuck the conspirator, i dont depend on some movie to introduce me to music

  • I like counting my money to this song.

  • Thumbs up if Ray Lamontagne brought you here! Not some movie.

  • i just finished watching < the conspirator < including this song , this is one of the beautiful movie

  • Pandora.. new fave<3

  • One of mt fav songs

  • thumbs up if the conspirator did NOT bring you here

  • thumbs up if my friend ralf brought me here.

  • It breaks my heart that anyone would ever feel this way.

  • @Cacaw1 I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a lot of people feel this way. That's what happens when one goes through hell all of their lives, and the only thing keeping them alive is the hope that things will someday get better.

  • Just wow. There are plenty of songs I like, but rarely do I hear one and think "that's my song." Ray made a song that just encapsulated every memory of mine from my late teens until early thirties.

  • Will i always feel this way?

  • Poetry in motion.... I could play it over and over....

    And well... Sometimes I do...

  • 1. Open a new tab

    2. Go to youtube and type in rainy mood.

    3. Play together

    4. Enjoy

    :)

  • @saltspar Tried that out. Sounds so awesome thanks for the advice :)

  • @saltspar Tried that out. Sounds so awesome thanks for the advice :)

  • @saltspar OMG thats amazing :)

  • everything his voice touches turns to gold

  • The chord progression in the chorus is simply amazing! Love this song!

  • "Its the hurt I hide that fuels the fire inside me.

Will I always feel this way?

    So empty, so estranged."

  • 9 people just want the dislike part of the bar to actually show up.

  • Poignant and beautiful. Great movie, great song.

  • @solstice66moon What movie? What movie?!

  • @Cacaw1 "The Conspirator" with James Macavoy. That's where I first heard the song. It's on the credits. The movie is really good.

  • @MyBlueSol Great! Thanks!

  • I understand this. Beautiful.

  • i just finished watching "the conspirator"

  • @asheyblack

aghhh, me too. fantastic. i quickly jotted down part of the lyrics to this song when it played on the credits.

  • @kbunk87 Lol, I did the exact same thing just now! :D

  • it's not fair that I relate to this song more than I can relate to a perfectly happy song.

it's a beautiful song, but still. you know, it probably is fair. everyone feels this way at some point. i just wish it would go away..

  • Thumbs up if The Conspirator brought you here!

  • @toopablo Whats the Conspirator?

  • @toopablo can u tell me the name of the song in the ending credits!?!?!

  • @toopablo thumbs up if you actually listen to Ray LaMontagne.

  • @toopablo That's some film wasn't it

  • I can so relate to this song.

  • This song is human.

  • Amazing song, amazing lyrics. This one touched me really deep

  • This is the song I've been looking for. This is the song that was "Ray Lamontagne's newest blah blah blah" on that radio so long ago. This was what I heard in that car riding in the rain at night, with those orange orange street lights... This is the one. Beautiful; sad. And just as sweet as the first time.

  • absolutely amazing song. hope my cover did you any kind of justice, ray lamontagne <3

  • beatiful song and his voice is so powerful so unique

  • mesmerizing, so beautiful. have loved it for years <3

  • what a stunning song

  • i usually just listen to music on one page while reading something on another, but every time this song hits my play list i -have- to stop and listen, really amazing

  • best song ever love itxx

  • I just listened to this song 33 times in a row.. Am I crazy?

  • @Grizzlybeard546 No you are not crazy! :)

  • There is nothing sweet about this song. The melody may be catchy and a person who didn't know the lyrics might think of it as a happy little tune, but it is deep dark and haunting. I'm sure many of us can relate to feeling constant pain, wondering, will we always feel so empty? Even surrounded by beauty, still so melancholy inside.

  • @Oatmealintheam I think the irony of the serenity of the song is intended by Ray Lamontagne. It would make sense because in reality you do the same you listen to something that sounds happy, but if you hear them it's different. Or see someone who looks happy but learn and really look you see an emptiness. Your comment made me really think about that, just thought I'd share.

  • @FrouElise Many a time I have listened to a song that is happy, and i cried. I can totally relate to the irony of this song.

  • @groovysherrie65 Exactly, just listening to the words can change the song. And I think we all can relate in a way, but I'm sorry : /

  • this is beautiful. I first heard it today at the end of the Conspirators. It's going to be a great inspiration to me <3

  • @ayeshahahahahahah lol I also first heard it watching The Conspirator(great film) I stayed till yhe end of the credits because i had to know the song and who sang it.i remember Ray, but forgot the song title.when i youtubed him & listened to some of his stuff i heard Let it be me and thought ithat was it, but wasn't sure.I googled ray & the movie again & found out today that this is the song.great song.

  • @vidlvr99 i just googled conspirators end song ahaha. it is a great film! took me a while to get into, but the end is SO haunting. and I'm not super fond of his other music, but you can't deny that he's talented

  • There is a empty happiness in this song that makes it so relatable

  • so very brilliant is the song painting of ray lamontagne

  • "see I been to hell and back to many times i must admit you kinda bore me"

...how do you create such amazingness Ray? How?

  • well god damn...

  • I just saw Ray in KC on Tuesday. Best show ever, best voice ever.

  • What a beautiful song.

It's the type that stays with you for a long time

  • Can someone explain this song to me.

  • i love this song.

  • ...Whoa. O_O

  • THIS SONG IS SOOOOO GOOD.

  • it's sickening how talented this man is...

  • @thrilla05 He is amazing :)

  • I have one word for this songs,wow!!!!!!! :)

  • Would like to run barefoot in some distant, green fields

  • Great...Great....Great Song!!!

  • 9 PEOPLE ARE EMPTY!

  • LOVE this song. That last verse is incredible.

  • This is a good version of Joshua James original

  • @astridelcielo riiiiiiiiight.

  • @astridelcielo - it was written by Ray Lamontagne.

  • Comment removed

  • @astridelcielo Normally I'd correct you and tell you that Ray LaMontagne actually wrote this song. But if you believe in a higher being, it was that higher being that really wrote it and gave us Ray to deliver it. And if you don't believe in a higher being after listening to that song, I feel truly sorry for you.

  • I thought this song was great for the movie, The Conspirator. I love this song, and if you havent seen the movie GO SEE IT!

  • @aliadrenalin best line

  • This has got to be one of the saddest and sweetest songs I've heard in a long time. I really really love it.

  • @ImaPeccable Keep living. 20 years from now.... you'll know how I feel. He still makes mer remember.. THAT long ago, and he still gets it right. And you know... I still 'feel this way' .. 'so empty and estranged'. I hear this song every time I walk the streets of Paris..... and I remember.

  • I'd love for this man to play at my wedding

  • @DreamTheater013 That's already my dream, go away :) ♥

  • One of the greatest singer/songwriters.....period.

  • This song takes me back many years ago when I was a young woman, and let the love of my life walk away.I wish I could go back, and do things over.Maybe then I would have been happy.

  • Even though the lyrics are sad, his music always manages to uplift me...how does that work? He's a genius! <3

  • There is 8 mental retarded people who dislike the song.

  • i am obsessed with him right now.

  • I've walked the streets and alleys of Paris over and over to this......remembering. I am old now, but the memories are young. I've lived lives since I was here as a late teen...when it all started. Every time I come back, I hear this song, remember... and I am there again. Thanks Ray

  • my heart is so sad and so complete when I hear these sounds

  • these guitar and violins...remind me to Dylan's Hurricane..

  • love this song so much

  • He always seems to hit where it hurts the most... <3

  • I simply can't believe how important this guy makes 5 minutes and 18 seconds sound.

  • now everything else I listen to sounds so empty...

  • I can't believe how beautiful his music is. It's unbelievable.

  • "Outside the rain is tapping on the leaves. To me it sounds like they're applauding us the quiet love we've made" That is what it's all about.

  • BEAUTIFUL is all i can say except I loved this song the first time i heard it and still do. thank you Ray.

  • I wish there was a "love" button for this song <3

  • A very dear friend of mine suggested I listen to this for some Soul healing,, and wow she was so right,, this hits the spot :)

  • He has a song on the show Parenthood about once a week. I love it.

  • "Se avessi un cuore, ora si spezzerebbe."

  • ..my favorite LaMontagne song..♥

  • ive been to hell and back so many times i must admit you kind of bore me

  • @Bucknihilist if you don't like it, don't fuckin listen to it!

  • Ray.. i feel like i should be floating on a lake in the wilderness and just looking up to the clouds that are zooming by so quickly when i hear your music and raspy but loving voice.

  • I don't really give a damn where he gets his lyrics or his music, he does it perfectly.

  • .."and of these cut-throat busted sunsets,

these cold and damp white mornings

    I have grown weary"

    ..perfect.♥

  • By far one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Not only the lyrics, but the acoustics as well. This guy has insane talent. Real music should sound like this. All the time.

  • It would be nice for him to go big... why would you want someone with so much talent to be paid so little just to satisfy you and your fear of him selling out his sound... pretty selfish if you ask me. I doubt he would either

  • @umlookcloser once he gets paid all of that money, he won't have control of his music anymore. And it won't sound the same. If i'm selfish because I like good music, then I can live with being selfish.

  • @jp45132 someone please, give this guy a medal!!! :DDDD

  • @jp45132 He wont have control of his music any more? Where did you get that from?

I dont get people like you. Do you not want many people to like him? Or you do, but you want him to refuse his money from album sales?

  • @squazz He said it himself, "the music industry is a beast, they seek you out because you do your own thing, but once you get in you have to fight like hell to do your own thing." The people that pay him will be in control of his music. And since when is he refusing money from album sales? That's crazy and only he could choose to refuse money from selling his own personal music. He has a label and he's been on Letterman and Kimmel, so obviously he's not doing too badly doing what he's doing.

  • Lyrically amazing. This song makes me feel a million emotions all at once and I never get sick of it.

  • I love this song soooo much seriously. All his songs make me feel good

  • I wish one day I could see you sing live..... you are helping me to get throught hard time and your songs lyric made me understand to man I love with all my heart. Your lyric are my guide.......Thank you x

  • Ray LaMontagne is a lyrical genius. I was gonna say lyrical God, but then that would be blasphemy. However... my Favorite Artist of ALL TIME, by far. :)

  • Beautifully tragic. Gorgeous.

  • dance the balboa to this. it feels so relaxing =)

  • I honestly have no idea why any person on this universe would dislike this song. To you 7 people, i hope you die in an eternal flame of fire.

  • @mjdragon11 well said old chum.

  • I relate to his music too. Its absolutely beautiful, hard to express, reaches to the deepest parts of my soul. I saw him play in Mempis this past Wed. at the Orpheum and when he sang Strangers the rowdy crowd shut up! You could of heard a pin drop. Just him and his guitar and harmonica. It was amazing!!!

  • I'm just in love with this dude all of his songs relate to me in all kinds of ways

  • I love playing this song, I love the lyrics, It's composed so bautifully.

  • changed my life

  • words cannot express the brilliance of this man's music.

  • i love his music ssooo much!!

  • as cheesy as this might sound..this song makes me feel something i cant explain.

  • if i believed in a soul this would be the feeling of it being touched... this or "Be Here Now"... i cant decide which of them are better

  • @robman8855 Definitely my two favorite Ray songs. theyre both so achingly, hauntigly beautiful.

  • @rosalbaoliviar You have no idea what I listen to, what I read, what I write. Why cant he be thankful that he has survived, instead of stating he has been strong enough to survive and then saying why do I feel so empty?? Fill that void in your heart by being thankful for what you have.. that is my problem with this so called lyrical master who should have let his demons win instead of putting us through this whining, crooning crying piece of pitty patty shit

  • @pinolian

...wow. I wish you the best of luck in life.

  • @pinolian uhm... dude... that's the point of the song.

  • Ray is the most under-rated artist out there! he deserves the moon and the stars and every accolade there is to be given...

  • His music touches my soul.

  • Comment removed

  • @pinolian Based on your harsh remarks....it is obvious you are disconnected with your soul.

  • @pinolian what the fuck is your problem man this guy is one of the greatest musicians to ever walk this earth. I'm not sure what music is so I'l explain. REAL music like this is an artform in which you express yourself, your feelings, emotions, and thoughts through lyrics and music. It's a shame that you can't appreciate good music...go back and listen to your Justin Beiber shit and Lil Wayne crap and talk about the same stuff and have ruined music...this is a beautiful song

  • Comment removed

  • :0) woooooooosh

  • I love this incredible song.... it's so haunting and lovely and poetic.

I agree with soncheartbreaker... he should be way bigger than he is. We're so slow to appreciate, huh?

  • Best imagery in a song I have EVER heard. Flawless song/artist.

  • thank you Mr. Lamontagne...from my heart! x x

  • he makes me wanna pick up a guitar again

  • I feel less estranged after hearing the last three lines of this song...feel like he knows the depth of the darkness that tries to consume me.

  • I cant believe how lucky i was for discovering this song and this man's Music.

  • how can this be possible?

  • The first time
