This method seems a bit contorted. There are far too many mental lines that need to be visualized at the same time. With more visualization, there is naturally less accuracy. I prefer the method of finding the midpoint between cue ball and object ball, then visualizing the tangent off the rail that intersects the midpoint. That's where you bank it. It's simple, easy and solid geometry and you only need to visualize one thing at a time. Only table, cue and hitting conditions are left to consider.
Doesn't spin effect the angle at which the object ball will come off the rail? (spin on the white will impart a spin in the opposite direction on the object ball I believe? I also understand that when the cue ball hits the object ball at an oblique angle - quite off center of the objectball -this too can create spin on the object ball. Which then effects the angle off the rail?)
@esoxmusky ehhh well depending how tight the rails are in and how damp it is can influence the projection of the ball. A really good player can adjust to that. So trig and calculus only go so far, because they do not take into account these factors.
f f nice video. i always just bank by feel or take a diff. cut shot and lose control of the cueball. i am a 6 in APA if i go up to a 7 its your fault.
Bank shots do involve geometry and other forms of mathematics, but they are very inconsistant because of the different tables every table "plays" differently. You could use all of the math in the world , but if the spot you hit on the rail is "dead" you will not make it. Forcefollow keep up the good work it's a shame that you are doing something as generous as giving people free lessons, and you have idiots telling you that you talk to much.
I had a friend who could bank just about any shot. He would show me where to aim when I wanted to bank a shot but he never explained to me how I could figure it out on my own. This video is awesome, I am looking forward to practicing this technique. thanks!
hey forcefollow, i dont really understand the second way of measuring the kick.... how will you noe where to draw the line from the Cueball to the rail? in the video, it is already in the diagram, but i dont understand how this is done in real life...could u help me understand please(:
It would be difficult to express in a seven minute video the effect of side, speed of the shot, throw, direction of force, and humidity on banks. I give the forcefollow a lot of credit for making it simple. Perhaps this would give a beginner a good place to start. If you are just learning this technique I recommend making sure you are hitting with a medium slow stroke and hit dead center and work up from there.
If there's another table next to the one you're playing on, aim for the side pocket on the adjacent table - it's about the same as using a mirror on the rail. If there's no table next to yours, use your imagination.
Banks are in principal a combination of science and mathematics. But due to tempurature, age of the rubber in the rails, quality of rubber, how inconsistent the felt was wrapped around the rail (tight in some areas, looser in others), a inconsistent stroke, etc. Thus, you cannot say that a bank shot is consistent, or an exact science... EVER! That is pure ignorance. There are many systems people use to make banks, from ones that are complicated, to purely feel. Find what works best for you.
This is the way I was taught to bank properly, but I hardly ever use it since if it's an easy bank I can do it with feel, and if it's a hard bank measuring it still doesn't give me a very high %. These are still great videos though, I disagree with those people that think there is something wrong with this "lesson" in banking.
thats why he's trying to teach you the most easiest way to do it..you retard..!and dont comment back fool..coz u cant say that we cannot play..filipinos do it and we do it real good..!
i do have to agree with esoxmusky. im not saying that ur stupid because ur much more experienced than myself. But it is all basic geometry. U r very good tho...thanx for the advice
Dr. Cue Says the same....Why is forcefollow saying this is ignorant? This IS indeed pure science as when it all boils down a billiard table is exactly twice as long as it is wide...Im Confused?
I usually just use the equal angle in/out idea and figure out where I want to hit the object ball so that it will bounce off into the pocket. It's simple and works but its crude since you have to eyeball the angles. This seems more accurate.
All I can say is, "GET ON WITH IT!!!!" MUCH too much talking. Just DO it and go over the priciples as you're doing it or afterwards. We're not stupid. We ARE players (or why else would we be looking at this - it's not class A entertainment!) Stop the 'rabbit'. More action please!
Ha I appreciate the feedback. I recommend you buy all the books by phil capelle, robert byrne and others. Also a BCA instructor would speed your learning.
doesnt it make a big difference where the cue ball is? cuz a lot of times if the cue ball is on the opposite side of the bank i have to hit with outside english to pocket the ball.
When you aim at the point on the rail, you are aiming for the point of contact with the object ball right? just like when you aim a cut shot you aim for the point of contact with the cue otherwise you undercut it.

intersecting point to object pocket, burn to memory,,
looking now for the 2 inch from the rail walk through,,
If I'm thinking right, if object ball was halfway closer to the rail,
the intersecting point is becoming much more steep as almost a perpendicular line to the bank point on rail, yup,, Ok now I see it

Here's a much simpler method.
If there's another table next to the one you're playing on, aim for the side pocket on the adjacent table - it's about the same as using a mirror on the rail. If there's no table next to yours, use your imagination.

bank shots are very inconsistent.
if you ever play on a table that you dont usually play on then you will notice that every single table is different. period, end of discussion.
bank shots are inconsistent because every cushion acts differently in different spots and on different tables.
If you dont know this either you never bank, you never play on any table but your own, or you simply do not play at all.
