In many interviews that Zack Snyder has had talking about watchmen, he makes on how he was somewhat disappointed in the ending of the comic book and said it felt as if there was going to be something more.

He never actually said he was going to change the ending but he gave many clues as to suggest as much. Whether the ending is happy or not, no one knows.

I'm sick of the people who say "Rorschach is my fav 'cause he's badass and nevar compromise, hellyea." He does have his quirks, which help us sympathize with him, but he isn't supposed to be the "good one" moralwise--in fact, his black&white viewpoint is the one that's almost completely torn down.

Maybe he was a "cool" character, but he was at his core a plot device--as all well written characters are--and NOT killing him would've taken away a large chunk of the book's overall message.
