You could lower the cost of insurance if you lowered the price of drugs and services.
People in the U.K. and Europe have publicly funded healthcare, but they also have lower-cost drugs and they aren't charged $3,000 for an MRI scan.
The gov. is the largest purchaser of healthcare it should try negotiating prices with doctors and drug companies.
Then prices would come down and insurance would become affordable again.

Insurance prices won't come down until healthcare costs come down. So offering a single-payer system will not eliminate the root causes of high healthcare costs.
The gov. must negotiate price controls.
Europe does not pay $3,000 for an MRI scan, they pay $1 for a pill while we pay $20. Therefore they can afford to offer Universal Healthcare.
Under current conditions Obama's plan will bankrupt this country.

They can do that because we subsidize the R&D. Many countries set the price just above manufacturing cost. The drug companies can agree or lose their patents and let those countries make it themselves. So they make a few cents per pill in France and have to charge another $20 per pill in the US. Federal mandates regarding the medicare and medicaid scams force the states to cough up the cash. Many states (including mine) tax hospital beds for that purpose. I went for decades as one of those without insurance. I CHOSE not to buy it. Then for a while I bought a policy for about $30 a month. It had a $5000 deductible. I never used it either. If you want to help the poor, pass the plate, not another tax. Legitimate charities have every incentive to be careful not to pander to bums. Don't believe the hype... I'm working with a team of health care professionals day in and day out comparing the overall health of the citizens of the world. I know what I'm talking about. Call it socialized medicine if you want to, but I'd rather refer to it as a system that saves lives.

Really, well I have a sister that is a trauma nurse in Canada. I'll take her work for the way their system is failing. It does anything but save lives. I wonder who's lying; this so called 20% (rounded up) who claim Canadian health care is awful or the 80% of Canadians who wouldn't trade their system for the world. Or maybe the numbers gathered by the Health Disparities departments comparing the health of Canadians vs that of Americans is the only truth we need. They are healthier! So are the French. Why is that?
