I can think of no better use for these little junkers. Duroplast is very toxic when burned. This is the only car that the "average" East German could get, and even at that, they had to pay in full up front, and take what ever car happened to have your name on it. Took many years to get one for most people. As with most things in communist countries, supply could not come close to meeting the demand.

The Trabant is a mechanical marvel. No fuel pump, no oil pump, no water pump, 5 moving parts in the engine. They aren't modern, but they are simple and reliable. They sure are slow though. I own two, and trips on the highway are always an experience. The people that race these things must really know how to drive.

The USA never made one decent car, so who are you to criticize? The Trabbi, like the Citroen 2CV was a "peoples car".Cheap to produce, unsophisticated, adequate. Production was labour intensive because it kept many people employed. Automation is expensive and creates unemployment. The UK had nothing to match the Trabbi. The "Volkswagen" Beetle was more complex and more expensive.

The Trabbi was a very advanced car which had a special safety feature that is often overlooked. When driven at speed the Trabbi would not permit you to "fall asleep at the wheel" :-) (Trabbi drivers will know what I mean) It is a fine car, of its class. It has charm and character, with more than adequate performance. Examples will still be around when todays cars are no more than an orange stain on the scrapyard floor. Don't knock what you don't know.

It has only a 600 ccm engine but Trabants back then were even victorious in 800 and 1000 ccm class rallys.

That is, when they just came out. Nowadays, they wouldn't stand a chance I guess.
