every noun in French has a gender, and there is no rules and regulations for it——that's the first tragedy for learning French as a second language....囧rz
@shanghaidenver leave thinking on it first of all you mixed all of them this is not a problem, say some thing make sentence , dont realize your thinking on gendre , just like what your heart want la le un une. first time , after you recognise it then u will remind . good luck , i also new learner of french , very good teacher .
@1221kary That's because "ai" = "eh" like in "aime" = "eh-m", but if you have a word that ends in "ain" it sounds like a nasal "ah" like in "le pain" = "leh pah", hope it helps
I disagree. There are some ways in which the ending of the noun gives away the gender of the noun. Instead of simply taking a chance, there are some rules in which one can figure the gender of the noun. Of course, there are exceptions, in which one can use the article to learn the gender.
@BuddyNovinski There are so many exceptions to the rules you are mentioning that it is more confusing than helping. As a French native, I can tell you that we do not rely on those rules to learn the gender of nouns. Instead we learn the noun with the article and memorize it that way.
Excuse me I am italian and I study French......Mais en Français "ai" on ne dit pas "e"?????? Tu me peux repondre dans la langue qui tu veux.....Mais je préfère l' Anglais ou l'Italien.......And at the end is A'...not A......si je ne me trompe pas..
Si un personne a oublié le gendre d'un mot, ou on ne sait pas le gendre, peut-on utiliser "le"? Je suis un américain élève de français II, et j'ai des problemes avec gendre. Je vous remercie de m'aider. ~Jérôme
@twilightFAN26492 When learning a new word, it's important to learn it with the article (le or la). If you don't know the gender, you can use le. People will still understand what you mean.
Thank you so much for posting these videos, your method of teaching is wonderful, the way you have organized the lessons, makes it easier to understand. I hope you post more particularly about the grammar. Thank you again.
@hbar45 Of course you can take notes... but I would recommend just repeating after me. In the more recent video lessons (on the site), I always have the English translation under the French text. This video is meant to give you a short introduction to the French language. So just have fun with it...

In the word “L’hotesse” he didn’t pronounce the “h” or the “o”. I understand that the “H” is silent, but how do you know when not to pronounce the “O” or is it when you have a “ho” combination you don’t pronounce them? Can anyone help me with this?
i cannot understand your problem. he said 'l'hotesse' (pronouncing: lotess) so, you see, just the 'h' is silent and there isnt any word with an 'ho' combination where the 'o' isnt pronounced. and sometimes they are speaking with a strong accent, so youll understand something that doesnt exist. i hope i could help. : )
About the gender, with le and la, its not true that there are no rules for knowing. I took french 1 at my school this year (im watching these to brush up before french 2 next year...) but there are some ways to tell whether they are feminine or not. Many times (not all times) if the word ends with an e, it will be feminine. I learned a couple other ones in class but I forgot them. Although, you are right, you do have to learn it that way, but there are some hints.
hello, i'd love to get info on your paid course but have not received an answer to my email, does your course teach from beginner all the way to advanced? pls rsvp, thanks
A: has anyone noticed that french is similar to spanish?, I took spanish during the school year, now I'm doing these videos so that I dont waste my summer, I think spanish really prepared me for this because i'm already used to the different forms for words, this is so easy, I reccommend to anyone to take spanish for two years, and then this.
B: on the one where you wrote "un train" I hear you say "un cah" did you accidently put the english word in print instead of the french one
@GregGrassland - of course they are similar, because they are both Romance languages, derived from Latin. So is Portuguese, Italian, Sicilian, Romanian, etc.

es mucho mas facil cuando hablas ingles y español por que en español las palabras también tienen un genero específico XD ::: its much more easier when you speak spanish and english, because in spanish words also have an specific gender xD
merci beaucoup... i have been taking french for 5 years and this is improving my pronunciation!!! je voyagerai en france avec mes classe de francais dans quarante-cinq jours!!!
Very useful lesson but you made a lot of mistake. Razoir is written "rasoir" and "hôtesse" takes a little hat (accent circonflexe) on the "o" (I don't know how to say that in english). Same thing with "gâteau" (this time the "a" takes the hat)
There is no unisex. Just feminine and masculine. If you don't know what a word is going to be, masculine is a lot more common than feminine, so it would be more practical to use le/un if you aren't sure.
Thank you so much for sharing ^ - ^
