  • I miss mine when it was like that. Although mina was louder for some reason. Prob just hard to hear the roar through a video. Low end sucked but top end power was great. It did drive a bit rough so I put exhaust on after two weeeks. nice vid man.

  • actually the kid is right open headers may not bend valves but running a motor just bare block with absolutely 0 exhaust when the exhaust gases push out they create a vacuam that will draw air in and that cold air hiting your extremely hot valves can bend them doesnt happen on dragsters because a: its not a common problem, they are rebuilt frequently, and headers are still enough exhaust to cut the chances of this happening and B: they idle at a shit ton of rpms usually

  • it depends on the CI of the motor anything above 400 u should be ok it just hurts the backpressure witch hurts about 10-30 horses

  • Actually the open headers give you more HP they cut back on torque. unfortunately with exhaust there's never a perfect world you have to give somewhere to gain, just have to figure out the balance that suits you.

  • @Devildodge69 it just moves your power band around now with a stock cam it can hurt alot but if the motor is built to rev to 8 or 9 it will help way more

  • Um, no, the lifters have nothing to do with it???? Open headers will not hurt anything at all there is way more than enough tubing between the exhaust valves and the open air that they would be perfectly save, plus the collector has four pulses coming through it really hard for air to back up through that. If open headers were detrimental then dragsters with zoomies would be impossible.....

  • Very nice sounding. I plan on trading my Jeep in for a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 ext. cab, and with my Jeep sounding as good as it does w/o a muffler, I may just do the same thing to the Dodge. I'll leave the converter on, but it sounds nice minus a muffler :)

    i ran open converter on mine and it got shit for gas mileage cause of the check engine light

  • Convertor wont change your fuel mileage, it's DOWNSTREAM of your O2 sensor. Most likely your O2 sensor was damaged by the guy who gutted your cat. Before all my mods, with 4.10's and open convertor the truck got about 14 mpg, up from 12 with the stock convertor and 3.55's.

  • Motor wasn't designed for open header driveing.. Keep running it like this, and you can burn out a valve. Why you can see a check engine light on.

  • nah, you dissconnect the exhaust, just leaving the headers attatched to the heads of the engine. so the exhaust doesnt go into any of the system, except the headers.

  • Good to hear! I was in HS and worked full time and had a brand new truck that I bought myself. Most of my friends didnt care and either drove old shitboxes or their parents bought them some fancy hot rod. They all trashed their cars since they didnt care about them. Mine was traded in, in better condition than when I bought it new lol. Mods on this truck are extensive, check my other videos, the Compilation Video has a rollup text of the mods that truck has....

  • No cat. I did nothing to bypass it just left the cat out of the exhaust. The PCM is pretty forgiving it usually doesnt even notice. I have no cats on my 2000 either and get no check engine light. O2 sensors are still mounted in the exhaust right where they were before.

  • Luckily I have great neighbors. I constantly ask them if I ever bother them with too much noise and they said not in the least. Only one neighbor has ever said anything once but that was before they got to know us. Now they come hang out and talk to us and such though they're not into hot rods lol.

  • Those are actually replacement faces, from NRAuto, not overlays. The guage initially does not respond now because there is a bad contact in one of the connection pins behind the cluster, as far as I can tell, not a friction interference with the face plate and the needle.

  • Means no exhaust hooked up to the headers, like a dedicated drag vehicle is.  Most drag cars though use zoomies, a piece of pipe that just directs the exhaust out to the sides of the car instead of directly underneath.

  • Hey since i know you know a few things that i probly dont will it be bad to just have a cutout with no headers just the stock manifolds or do you think that would somehow cause problems besides the cops ha

  • You need to put your cutout about a foot AFTER the UPSTREAM O2 sensor (sensor closest to the engine) This sensor reads the exhaust gas mixture and it controls the A/F ratio. If fresh air gets to it, the truck will richen up so bad it will wash out the cylinders with gas and ruin the rings and cylinders. You can use it with stock manifolds just make sure you place it like said, best to put it right after your catalytic convertor.

  • Preciate it man but yea the guy up at the shop told me about that and placed it about like u said but a little farther down the line and it sounds mean as fuck now i love it haha the first start was the best.

  • Did you get one with a removeable plate or the fancy electric type that you operate from inside the cab? Those are nice but a bit pricey. Plus too much temptation to flip that switch at a stoplight lol. I'd have the popo's on my ass in no time with my luck LOL.

  • Not at all. As long as you have about a foot of exhaust pipe downstream of the PRE-CAT O2 sensor (so exhaust pulses don't back up and give it fresh air to read too, causing a pig rich condition) then it's just fine. The rest of the tubing on street vehicles is to dampen the noise, direct the carbon monoxide from the passenger compartment, and gives room for the catalytic convertor and muffler. Race vehicles run open headers just for zero backpressure at high RPM.

  • Parts of that engine will live on and be put in my 2000 Ram. If I can figure out a way to get around inspection without having to get a phony tag and risking jail time (have the truck actually get through a real inspection and get a tag) while running a 408 and standalone, I will try this again. But it's going to be my 2000 Ram. The 96 will be taken care of well with my Dad as he will barely use it anyway.

  • Mine's because of a multiple misfire code set by the PCM due to the big ol fat cam. Yours is probably due to a bad O2 sensor or something of the like. You need to find out what code it is, then look it up in a Haynes manual or online to see what it is first.

  • Your running 12:3:1 compression on pump gas? Must be some good stuff. 93+!

  • It runs on 93 Pump Gas. The key is the cam. It has alot of overlap, so the cylinder pressure stays around 150 PSI. Plus they claim they maximize the "quench" in the head pocket to stop predetonation. The timing is retarded some too in order to keep it from predetonating.

  • It gets about 8 MPG. Runs premium only. It's a 12.3 Compression Ratio engine, with full race ported heads, a huge cam, and the video was taken with it running open headers, or no exhaust past the headers. With the large overlap on the cam, it lopes like a sonofabitch, rocks the truck side to side pretty hard.

  • If you mean the white face guages, no, they are NRAuto white face guages. There are much cooler ones available now, I bought those in 99 when white faced guages were the "new" thing lol.

  • no i mean the actual tach (the neddle) because my gauge does not have the the rpm, i bought one with the rpm but i may need the wires to connect them so they will be useful

  • Oh, yeah that's the stock cluster. Not sure but I think all Ram's clusters are wired for a tach, just some didnt come with one. I dont think I've ever seen a 94-01 Ram without one myself though, dont even know what a cluster looks like without a tach.... lol.
