  • (i mean for the pickup)

  • wow. the lows are huge. awesome. did you get it routed yourself or do they offer models like that from the factory?

  • @usfenderfsdlx It's not routed, it's a surface mounted slim pickup with adhesive backing.

  • What key is this in so I can play harp to it?

  • is this the resonator?

  • Beautiful.

  • That is so cool! listened to it over and over when I found it. Might I ask where you found the tabs or do you have them somewhere?

  • killer sustain!!

  • Very Good. I sold my Regal chrome resonator a few years ago. (not because I wanted to), I'm looking for another except I want and electric/acoustic. I'm gonna check on the Republics. If you don't mind check out my video of an original blues/rock version of "Count your Blessings" "Lap Steel'. That should bring it up. Thanks.

  • @Heahmount - Hey Noel, I think you'll find open G used more often than D. There's nothing keeping you from using both (I do). You're on the right track, enjoy and thanks for checking out the video.

  • Wonderful! What a soulful rendition! Very nice! Thank you!

  • What is the difference in sound compared to an acoustic if played normally ???

  • We need more.

  • estas chato

  • OUCH!!!!! Great sustain....yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Nice clean job pickin and shootin that glass!!

  • thumbs up if you love this stuff. this guys so talented!!!!! a new george harrison me thinks!!!!!

  • Wow that was really blues... I watched this a couple times my blues is revolutionized, thanks mister for inspiring my style

  • I bought one too and wonder what is the model of National Cones that you bought

for it? Model# please. I might do the same here to mine.

  • Jesus Christ that was good.

  • 1. TriCone Resonator Guitar = Pure Heaven

    2. you truly rock, Maestro!

    thank you!!

  • What haven't you put up anymore videos of the Tricone. Nice diffrent sound and looks

like thats on my order book with the pickup aswell.

  • @alphasxsignal thanks for the encouragement, maybe I will try and do something new

  • @jeffandtaxes I bought one about a month ago and having fun with it along with all my other guitars.

  • Kooool.... just luved it.. thanx..

  • does somebody knows a cd, where are a lot of these songs, maybe something like "best of slide guitar" or something like that?

i have many problems to find real good blues slide guitars songs and players, but i would love to listen it all day long, if a had a cd or some music..

aaah, and i just wanted to say, AWESOME PLAYING!

  • amazing song. do you have any tabs available? thanks

  • Awsom playing ... Very cool !!

  • This is a great song. My Aunt sang this song at my mothers funeral. When it is my turn to pass i would love to have this played at my final resting place. This is full of SOUL.

  • Nicely done!

  • Just got Quarterman cones for my RC51 today. What a difference! Now I just need a pick up.

  • What is the make of that guitar resonator?

  • @alphasxsignal It's made in China and sold under the brand name "Republic" here in the states. This model is the "Tricone"

  • @jeffandtaxes So you changed the cones with hand-spun National cones is this right?

Which hand spun. Im sure I would do the same to be sure to get this sound that I like.

  • @alphasxsignal I have a similar guitar (an early Continental Tricone) and I changed the Conti cones to a set of National "Hot Rod" cones. It took a (very) minor bit of tweaking to fit them properly, but the difference is night and day... AMAZING presence and tonal depth. I had also purchased an original set of early '30's National cones from Ebay, and the new Hot Rod cones sounded every bit as good, so much so that I kept the H.R. cones and re-sold the originals. (They WERE pricey)

  • @fillmorenyc1 do you mean the 5 .9375" Tricone Resonators (Qty3) on the website for 128 dollars? can i change them myself or does it need special tools? p.s. is there a big difference to the stock one? becaus also stock the sound to me is amazing...

  • @psalmenlesung Yep, thats them. Which Tricone do you have? A National Tricone made in the last 6 years would already have those cones in it. My guitar is an early Conti with the German Silver body. The difference was stunning. They're a bit taller than the Conti cones, but thats ok cause I only play slide on it. No special tools. You just need to be sure the cones sit perfectly flat in the cone well and aren't touching anything, cause those guitars can have difficult to find buzzes.

  • @psalmenlesung Also, once you find a position for the cones where they are nice and flat in the cone well, use a Sharpie marker and put small dots on the very edge of the cones, and corresponding dots on the cone well right next to the dots on the cones. I use 1 dot on the first cone, 2 dots on the 2nd cone and 3 dots on the 3rd cone. This way, if you ever remove them, you'll know exactly where to return them to. You MIGHT have to enlarge the holes where the tripod bridge sits on the cones.

  • @psalmenlesung Thats gonna depend on which Tricone you have. Its not difficult to do, but you HAVE to be careful, cause those cones are REALLY delicate and damage easily. Once you fit them in & set the action where you want it, just leave it, cause constant disassembly & reassembly is what causes buzzes & noises. Older Nat's sometimes had cork or fine grit sandpaper under the cones, but IMO if you can get it right without that, it definitely sounds "nastier" metal to metal in the cone well.

  • @fillmorenyc1 i have a rebublic tricone, guess the same one as jeffandtaxes uses in this song. but i don't know what kind of resonators i originally have in it. maybe jeffandtaxes knows?

but thanks for your strong advice with the markers!

do you know what kind of resonators i have in? p.s. for me the sound is great and rather than risking to make something wrong i leave the guitar as is...

  • @psalmenlesung Sorry, bro. I dont know what cones would be in a Republic Tricone. IF they're stock cones, Im very confident that the H.R. cones would make a big improvement, but as you know, "If it aint broke, dont fix it"!! You say that you love the sound... maybe its best just to keep it as is and try different strings to nail a killer tone? On ANY tricone, I prefer Phosphor Bronze strings in a medium gauge. Some players use heavier than medium (16's), but thats a LOT of tension on everything.

  • @fillmorenyc1 i've been in some boards and they say republic has continental and they are quite fine. and: bottleneckjohn plays only original stock republicans :-). also i read the cones are just ONE part of the setup and if the whole setup is ok, just leave it. thanks for your hint about the strings, as a beginner i got quite light ones - 12 or 13 - and i guess, i leave the cones now and maybe someday i get stronger strings!

  • @psalmenlesung Republic uses Conti cones? I didnt know that. My tricone is an early Conti with the German silver body. Not many Conti's were made with silver bodies (most are brass). Original National tricones were silver, so maybe thats why it responded so well to the Nat cones? I agree to leave yours as it is if you like it. If the cones are Conti's, the Nat cones WILL be a bit taller, so the guitar will need to be set up again if you play fingerstyle. Good luck with your guitar!!

  • @fillmorenyc1 now i got the .16 resophonic strings, a bigger tube and it sounds great to me! :-) maybe you look at my newest video "Republic Tricone - Eliah meets the Lord - Music Paris Texas ". ok, i am quite a beginner in slide, but the tricone to me sounds perfect now.

p.s. i was in a store playing a national, and didn't really like it more than mine. was a bisquit though, and mine a tricone...

  • @psalmenlesung Yes, strings DO make a BIG difference. A Tricone & a biscuit resonator sound completely different. I also have an early 30's National "Style O" with a steel body (not brass). It sounds AMAZING. More "raw", primative (and louder) than the Tricone, which has a more delicate & complex tone. Im listening to your vid right now... that guitar sounds FANTASTIC, man!! I would NOT change cones that sound THAT good!! I dont think National Hot Rod cones could improve that tone! Killer!! :-)

  • @fillmorenyc1 thanks a lot for your hint and i'm glad you say the sound is ok ! :-)

  • Have you installed a custom pickup? I don't know which brand should I go for my spider resonator...

  • @MrFranciscoFidalgo - That's a top mounted LACE pickup. I couldn't tell you what to use with a spider, but I hear good things about the Schatten pickups. Gotta get yourself a preamp though, I would look at the Fishman Jerry Douglas. For that matter, I'm sure they have some nice pups for reso too

  • you are being very modest, that is realy beautiful, thanks for the video.

Do you like the Republic Res.?, i'm thinking on getting one

  • @wolf69a - yes, I really enjoy this instrument. I did buy a new set of hand-spun National cones for it that made a significant difference but even stock it's a good sounding tricone.

  • Wow Dude, you just started playing slide? absolutely amazing tone and feel. thanks for this....i'm a huge blues fan, ive been playin slide for 5 yrs and NO WAY do I sound like this. amazing!!! keep postin my friend, i'll keep on watchin!!!

  • @jaylang47 - thanks!

  • Please make a video lesson of this.

  • @rightwingted - hey, I wouldn't know where to start. I'm a self taught player. You should check out Kenny Lee Burgess and Bottleneck John in my favorites. If you want to know anything about how this song was played just shoot but I can't guarantee I can answer coherently in qualified guitar-speak

  • @jeffandtaxes Thank you for the post of your comment so soon. I have one question for you though what is the exact name of your National? Because I like it a lot. Thank you.

  • @rightwingted - It's not a National, it's a Chinese-made tricone sold in the States under the brand "Republic". The typical "for the money" and "bang for the buck" comments go here, and they're all true. I did however buy and install a set of real National spun cones and that really did wake it up considerably in both tone sweetness as well as volume.

  • @jeffandtaxes My bad, I meant Republic. Thanks anyways.

  • nice sound

  • that was absolutely beautiful, makes me wanna try my hand at slide again.

  • WOW!!!! Never in my life have i heard slide guitar like that!! Been playing guitar for years, but never heard that! I think im gonna watch this again, take notes, and play it in church sunday! :D GREAT job!!

  • I was wondering what tuning you have your guitar in. I play slide in an open G tuning GBDGBD.

  • @hummersmstr - hey man this is open D tuning...DADF#AD - a very "plaintive" tuning, mess with it and you'll see what I mean

  • ya really nice ,,,and thanx for this ,,,peace man

  • That sounds REALLY good, the quality is so crisp, im going to try that mic set up that you said on previous comment.

  • @TheJosh1111111111111 Yes he sounds good. I'd like to know how he's micking this as well, would you direct me. Another way to amplify these is with a pu made for resonator guitars.............and I'm blanking out on the name... Fishman, get the one that needs the outboard preamp they sound best (my opinion)

  • @wc4dblues - hey thanks, I am actually using a Lace Ultra Slim plugged into a Behringer V-Amp with reverb and tremelo along with a couple of pencil condenser mic's in XY pattern in front of the guitar, so I mixed the tracks down to get a sense of both the amplified and acoustic sound.

  • Great tact on the playing

    Awesome tone

  • I like it :)

  • Now THAT"S what a resonator is supposed to sound like. Way cool.

  • Sounds great I'am 64 years old never played guitar at all. Do you think this late in life I could learn to play slide guitar ?????? Be honest.

  • @olddoowoop64

Of course you can learn. I'm 54 and have been playing since I was 13 and you learn new things all the time, that is the beauty of music, discovering new things all the time. I suggest if you wish to focus on slide purchase a resonator or tricone. Learn open G, D and E tunings and daily practice and you are on your way. Best wishes on your musical jouney.

  • @olddoowoop64 - Ha! Why not????

  • @olddoowoop64 wow! impress your grandchildren with your guitar skills!! rock on!!

  • @olddoowoop64 Yes. Yes you can. :) In a couple of months you get this realization that you can play anything, with a little practice, after hearing it.

  • Loving this!, I have listened to it like 10 times ahahah so chiillll:D

  • Beautiful Southern Comfort Swamp sound,.......awesome, loved it.

  • Very nice

  • really good, especially if you just picked up slide. I am glad you have taught yourself finger picking style. I bet it makes a big difference.

  • really good, especially if you just picked up slide. I am glad you have taught yourself finger picking style. I bet it makes a big difference.

  • how long u been play that was good

  • Coolest video I've ever seen!!! I personally would put this up there with Ry Cooders "Feelin Bad Blues"....and thats sayin a LOT

  • this may be the most forlorn, heart-breaking rendition of this tune i've ever heard. fucking chills and tears, man, you and this beautiful guitar. and i'm at work, you bastard. i can't be getting all misty.

  • @bayleyasher - thanks so much, I am just going for a vibe here, nothing technical obviously. When I recorded this I had been playing slide for all of a week. I've been playing guitar for 30 years though, and sometimes I think the best you can do is leave more space than notes.

  • Sound's like Pink Floyd

  • outstanding great soud stirred my soul thx

  • dude......you're really good.....

    thank you for posting.

  • mp3iffy works again wooohoooo awesome - google mp3iffy

  • cool one !!! What's this song?

  • is that a pick up i see or are u playing unplugged ive been thinking hard about gettin a resinator to play slide on instead of my alverez

  • so good !

  • Great sound really nice pace too ... it kind of reminds me of long days spent relaxing and fishing down at the river where I grew up lol :)

  • Did you order this custom with the pickup? I'm trying to figure out my pickup options when it comes to resonators.

    And of course...Awesome playing!

  • this is great dude, would like to see more

  • Haunting. . .very very nice.

  • sounds awesome

  • this is pretty good. you should try fingerpickin though.

  • @migasaguiar Thanks, like I said I had literally picked up slide playing that week. It's been a while now and I'm playing with thumb and index finger picks and I agree, it's a better sound and allow a lot more room for adding bass lines over lead etc...

  • awesome. pass the reefer :D

  • Does that come with a Humbucker PU?

  • no thats an after market PU, Lace i think

  • i'm totally relaxed ;D

  • Nice pickin ,beautiful instrument! But i have to say the first thing i noticed was the Colby shirt!Best APBT's ever!

  • Sounds damn good! Digging the sound of the Republic guitars. And a Colby dog shirt too! Just made my day. : )

  • bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I came across this video while looking for videos on open tunings. Enjoyed the way this was played. I fell in love with the guitar and bought myself one just like it same night.

Kepp playing. Looking forward to more posts by you

  • Nice to hear some more relaxed playing

  • Jeff or others. Anyone tell me where I can find slide tab for this song? Sorry, I know basic to most everyone, but I am new new to slide and learning open G and D right now.

  • You should search out Keni Lee Burgess on you tube. He sells instructional videos. I haven't seen one, but his playing is amazing so it might be worth taking a chance

  • ask a guy on here, has a bunch of videos, called DeltaBlues, if you can't find him just look in my favorite videos, he gives tabs

    cheers

  • Hey man!! Nice work! 2 things -- I notice that this is 10 months old... how's the slide playing coming along now? And 2-- I am also just picking up the slide~ anybody know of any good instructional videos on YouTube for slide playing?

Once again -- GORGEOUS song. Check out the band "Explosions in the Sky", you'll dig..

  • nice sounds! what make/model amp are you plugged into?

  • Thanks Juan, I'm not using an amp. Here is the recording setup - I am running the pickup into a Behringer V-Amp Pro set on the Tweed Deluxe setting with some tremelo added. There is also one overhead room condenser mic and one pointed roughly at the neck joint in front. It's all mixed together for the result you hear. It's a combination of the acoustic sound and the amplified sound.

  • @JuanDeSoCal Hey bro. sounds good. Ry cooder says the way to learn is to put the slide on and run it up ,and down the strings till ya can't stand it any more, or some thing real close to that at any rate. So just keep on doin' what yer doin'. And you too will be a slide player!!!

  • Hi Bro, great job here, really nice man I dig this!

  • Nice to hear some more relaxed atmospheric playing instead of the endless wanking on youtube.

  • what is your pickup arrangement...mfg.? single or two pickups?

  • It's a lace humbucker, I forget the model name, Ultra Slim? Something like that. It sticks to the top rather than screws. I'm also using a room condenser mic and mixing the 2 sounds for the final track

  • brilliant -- i;ve listened to this like 50 times so relaxing thanks!!

  • Thanks Nouge, it's really basic stuff but I like it and I'm glad you do too. Take it easy brother.

  • Nice slide work. In my opinion, it is harder to play slow and deliberate like this than to whale away. If you are just learning I can't wait until you post something after some practice. I'm getting into slide with my National "O" and I love the sound of these kind of guitars with a good slide. I have a mudslide too and it's about tied with my glass slide steve james recommended at a blues fest session I met him at. Keep up the good work and repost more... Bob

  • Very Albatross like.

  • You're either more obtuse than Dennis Miller or I'm just out of the loop, but I have no idea what that means. Thanks for checking it out though!

  • Albatross is an instrumental by Fleetwood Mac, written by Peter Green. The first and last parts - before and after Amazing Grace are reminiscent of that. You'll find it around on youtube. Very nice playing by the way!

  • Consider yourself bookmarked :) Damn that's beautiful.

I just got my Dad's old Triolian. I hope I can sound half that awesome.

  • Hey thanks man, just tuner her up and go and you'll be surprised that you'll hear yourself doing cool stuff almost immediately. The challenge is to get beyond the basics. That's what I am going to try and do. Not there yet, but having a blast nonetheless!

    -J

  • How new is your guitar? It looks pristine!

Mine's a 1928 with some chips in the paint. Nicer sound once I got used to it. The cat doesn't run away so much, now.

  • Ha! Mine's a brand new Republic with replaced National cones. If you don't like your paint chips I'll trade ya straight up ;-)

  • Really?!?! I wouldn't have to pay you anything at all? LOL :)

  • So nice and clean sound, have loved your guitarplay ever since i first heard the bruisers. Inspired me alot! Love death and taxes to, have a good one! Greetings from sweden

  • Thanks memonas, I really appreciate the encouragement. I'm new at this slide stuff and can only get better!

    -Jeff

  • wow nice guitar, and the tunes great...sit back and enjouying it.
