I think it is called "Fair Use" if you use the content for educational use or once it is placed in "Public Domain" I do agree that copyright laws are very complex. I choose not to use any content I did not create. I learned about this stuff in Business Law at a community college. "Great video" it explains proper conduct online =)
am I allowed to recreate a song or a scene? let's say if I make a amateur video of batman, is batman copyrighted to the degree that I can't use him in my movies, even as a costume?
@ThEricucho There is a YouTube video maker that does something similar to this. So it probably ok but if you were to make tons of money off it somehow, it might be considered a copyright violation by the owner. I'm not a lawyer so take that for what's it worth.
but it not's necessary clear to me that the video response is the next video.
it could be anything cause it doesn't have the title in it. And again I would have to scroll down to find it. It would be easier to just take the 10 minutes to add the annontations because I am sure I aint the only one that watched the series in order.
You said in your last video that I can use HTML in my comments,,, I tried BOLD within this text and it didn't work, Please message me as I didn't get the fine details of how,, or maybe where to use BOLD.
"Check out my channel!!!!" just kidding, I hate spam pretty much every message in my inbox is spam. But really, even if someone says and explains their video is like your work, and if you decide to be nice and comment, they keep messaging you till you subscribe... or block. Nobody on block list, but really, if you use part of another youtuber's video in yours and they didn't say they cared, could they still take it down?
I want to make sure what I'm doing is ethically right...
I sent this guy a message who has commented on my video. I checked out his channel and liked his videos.
I told him that I thought he deserved more views (both of our channels are for guitar) and I told him that I was thinking about sending my subscribers this way.
I said message me back and talk about it. I said that I might send my subsribers to him and then maybe he could tell some subs about me, if he wants.
Speaking of cross promotion, would it be alright to use a cover of a popular song from another user on youtube as long as I have permission from the user?
In theory you'd need a written agreement to use the music. However if you have their explicit approval for them to use their music or they release their music for other public uses via a creative commons license, it's not likely they're going to then turn around and file a copyright/DMCA claim on your video.
its hard to get vids out thier. im trying to hustle my vids by sending to friends, and posting vid responses that are of the same topic. this is really good info and i like that you talked about ruining the experience for others. ive been ricknrolled like 20 times. its gotten annoying.
I find it encouraging to see a successful poster such as yourself advocate ethical practices as well, as I see spam-tactics abused frequently here and on other video sites...unfortunately with apparent success for the spammer.
Thank you for the informative and useful series! I found a number of useful tips that I hope will help me in my YouTubing endeavors.
I wish more people like you were on youtube - good ethics and morals. You put a lot of hard work into your videos, unlike many that i've seen with 1,000,000+ hits. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for making this series. I am new and was looking for just such a thing, ways to get more subscribers that DON'T involve pointedly spewing bile that is sure to offend. I accept constructive criticism. I've made 2 videos. Also, I subscribed. You do nice work.
ive watched all ur episodes and i notice u wear a different jumper in each episode can we have a jumper video montage, great colour scheme and a really happy show. thanks
Found a video. Still hasn't been implemented as a resource by youtube yet since it just happened, but the deal sounds promising. I tried to hyperlink the url, but I guess they removed the functionality because of spammers. Too bad. Search EMI and tlg847 who posted the video.
Has there been a video or link provided by youtube to explain the rules behind the EMI deal they've made that will supposedly open up the copyright for use on youtube for artist under the EMI label. I've really enjoyed this series. Thanks for doing it.
Again thank you for a great series. I was aware of some of the material you covered, but I think you did a good job of putting it together. Something I really liked was your comments on how you have broken copyright and other things and that it is easy to do.
Sorry for my last short comment. I respect you for taking the time to make these videos to help other users like me. You should keep up the good work and they're so good I don't really know how to improve the videos
Thank you for taking the time to produce this informative video. I'm very new to YouTube, and many of the things you talked about will help me be a better YouTube citizen. I'll check back for more! Cheers!
when someone I don't know sends me a friends request, I only accept them when they at least have a few subscribers and allow bulletins on their channels as well, that way I can get some views out of them as well when I put out a bulletin =)
It would be cool if you mention something about video effects and music. I watch Nalts videos and others users. I think music really can make or break a video. So ya.
For information on copyrights and the legal "fair use" of copyrights, I suggest wikipedia: 2 articles: "Copyright" and "Fair_use".
Thank you for the fantastic spamming tips! ;-) *joking*
John, have you ever considered being (one of many) "life coach"? Good money can be made out of this. At least, you're a mentor for anonymous YouTubers. Thanks *not joking this time*
Lucid, cogent & sensible as always. Jon dearest, will you marry me? (I should at this point, in the spirit of honesty, reveal I'm a guy- a spotty faced college student one at that!) I do rather miss your "Dear God" series though it must be said (:
I'm flattered yet heterosexual. However, I do live a couple of blocks away from one of the most pro-homosexual neighborhoods on the planet. The Castro district in San Francisco. Where rainbow flags are a way of life.
yea! um, I can't belive that you can talk so fast for 10 minutes!!!! I could never do that. humm. I guess I will stop using copywritten music. I have stoped. officially. Now I am just going to impersinate everyone. you first. ;) jkjk =D kvp
I usually only talk for a few minutes then I use a transition screen to hide the breaks. And I usually have to do multiple takes for each part since it's partly extemporaneous and partly scripted. I wish I had a teleprompter! lol.
I think it would be hilarious if you impersonated famous YouTubers.
What you can do to substitute for a teleprompter is type is out on a word processor and increase the font. I sometimes use this technique. Since your webcam is on your computer, as you read off the digital-teleprompter, it looks like you are speaking into the camera.
I've tried that. My webcam is too close to my face and one can easily tell I'm reading off a script. That's why the cameras are so far way from the news anchor with the news broadcasts. The angle from the lens and the teleprompter is significantly reduced thus creating the appearance they are looking at the lens.
Well it makes me feel better that you do takes and redos, I thought you were a robot bc it does not look like that. haha, and impersonations, halarious. that is actually one of my next movies! hummm u are not allowed to do it before me. humph. ~Kathleen
I'm totally stealing your idea! My first video is going to be impersonating one pagekv. Only looking cuter. I just need to find a blond wig. Featured list here I come! :)
Great as usual, Jon! Regarding copyright, when I use music, it's only brief excerpts, and I give full credit in sidebar -- would that have any bearing on fair use, etc? Maybe not, 'cause they seem to remove stuff across the board. Ideas for shows: "How To," semi-technical stuff for making vids, a la your technique of voiceover with cam, moviemaker, audio track; things like that. Also: "What do you look for in a video?"
I'm no lawyer and fair use in the US is pretty complicated. With music I think the amount is very short you can use. But again I'm no lawyer. Wikipedia might have something to add to the question.
Castaa, each part of this series is so well thought-out, thanks for making these. I agree with the points here, but I also think the community will even itself out over time as far as the fake video responses and chain letters, etc. The person who's video is featured shouldn't accept off-topic video responses and I think video owners should clean-up as much spam/chainletters as they can from their own videos.

Castaa, quick question. I am thinking about buying a better cam, and yours seems pretty fair - How much was the cost?
ElementaryPhysics 2 years ago
I recommend the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. It's about $70 but I've seen it on sale for $50 from time to time.
However for a better quality I would recommend getting a used or new Flip video flash memory based camcorder which are around $100 to $200.

how does the copyright apply to remixes for music?
