this is great for little league but the problem is when you start going against more skilled defenders they will take advantage of that initial long step because your off balance. Most coaches now say that you should have short choppier steps and the contact should be on the second step.
What should be the first point of contact? My coach is teaching us to make contact with our head (facemask) first, but I believe that's dangerous to the neck, and our entire team left with sore necks today. Anyone answer?
Contact should be your first step so that the second step your foot coming forward follows the guy your trying to block. If contact is your secound step how does the lineman adjust if the defensive guy changes direction before the second step? Good video!!!
Question, when I play I put my hand on the outside of my leg so I am almost half way there when I shoot my hands back so doesn't getting your hand at your face just make that move longer and less efficient ?
@Church6397 Ya, i did that to, but i found out the putting your hand right above your thigh in your stance is works just as well as the traditional stance for me.
Casey, I love your videos but leading with the facemask on a block is just as illegal as leading with the facemask on a tackle ... I am also old school enough to love forearms, chest & shoulder blocking & it works just fine from youth thru high school ... but I have no problem teaching hands either ... just remove the part about hitting with your helmet/mask/etc. ... finally, please note that a 'load' step 1st, then an 'explode' step with contact is the most powerful & balanced way to block ...
@fbcoachjj i don't mean to sound a bit offensive but as time progresses things change...for the better....new technique way better then his video is being taught around the country....its proven to be better then blocking with arms and such...
@hoppppoh lol pass block is simpler. keep your shoulders square to line of scrimage " open the door and you let the dogs in" dont turn your shoulders you'll lose..stay low in a squat like position chest up eyes up.. look for line backers while you block the d-lineman...at first , you step inside to protect from blitzs..inside responsability first...if no one shows instantly your next responsibility is the head up lineman....make sure you really fire those hands..win with your feet movement..
@hoppppoh o and cut blocking is for pussies...you'll only do it if you absolutely have to because your beating the teams ass and they are blitzing two or three in your gap...in that case you would take your outer most shoulder and run it through the outside leg of the d-lineman as you bear crawl through to complete the block he is disabled and so is the gap...DOG PILE!!!
@thenoyesmachine cut blocks arnt for pussies in my opinion picking up a blitz is a good time to cut block also when your playing tackle and you have a pulling guard...then filling his whole can be a good time too... and pass blocking is easey im just pointing out that he is not teaching it...
@goodtimshi yeah your right but when you get out of your stance you have no choice of leaning foward. you push upwards after the first hit and you bring the guy up using your butt muscles.
@MrPppaul not if you dont stop your feet....its easy to keep a low pad level even after the contact.... but the main reason we dont lean is because the defensive line uses your leaning ( imbalance) to their advantage...
This technique is failure. You can't punch on the first step... you take either a lateral, drop, or angle step first, load on the first step, then punch on the second. He is right about one thing you have to use your head too. This old technique doesn't work anymore, punching on the first step gives NO POWER
@whycantwegetanygirls and where do you learn this?? what state do you play football in???? what division is your football team??? i need some validity of your knowledge....some concrete proof that when i bust someone on first step...and thats the explosion out of my stance....that it doesnt have power or balance...remember im taking a 6 inch power step also...so im balanced...
@thenoyesmachine Depend on the team. A team like st xavier will take a 6 inch power step then a team like a Gonzaga will just make contact on the first step. Really depends on the oline coaches beliefs.
alright some are good tips but not are when its aaat 3:16 when he says to block with your hands and face is wrong the face part is wrong plus he lefted out that you should only be 6 inches from the man in front of you i play o line for my highschool #60 LWHS CANE PRIDE
the only i have to correct is your first step it should only be about six inches. you dont want to over step so you cross the line of scrimmage on a pass play.
lmao "my 2 time all american ncaa lineman coach" you think your cool wsucougerfan19? my highschool lineman coach played 13 years in the nfl at left tackle.
I am being taught in highschool that I should put one foot behind the other and take the first step with the hind foot. I think it is wrong because it takes to much time to go forward and make the contact. And, in the video the coach doesn't seem to do that.. so what do you guys recommend? put the feet in a straight line or one in the front and the other in behind?
i play highschool football varsity starter ure doing it right trust me just on reach block drop ure drop foot 90 degrees bak about 1 in from normal and if its a down block drop ure foot 45 degrees bak if u dotn understand message me i cant rly type alot in this comment box
Nice job Coach! Good basic information for any player or coach! The rediculous negativity from one of the posters is everything that is wrong with sports these days. Having coached for 20 years, this is good information!
It's a good video. Your left hand position in a right handed stance is very important. Keep your weight light on your left arm. It helps to keep your kids back flat and their butt low! Also I teach the first and second step as one fluid movement. When the kids hit the pad they should bring their back foot also. Make sure they keep the fit and use wide short quick steps.
7575ghs let us all hope that you really don't coach kids in anything. Looking at your replies shows me you are one immature, juvenile, and obviously lacking in social graces and skills let alone football. Hey, do all of us who blog here a real big favor and don't respond unless you have something to add to the conversation other than tripe.

obviously there are a lot of losing coaches blogging here with all the negative response to the technique that is basically taught most everywhere today. hey NDALUMNI, yeah, try controlling the defense with your shoulder. Like coach Casey says thats really old school. I like your video coach and you're right on with the technique.
Dang fellas there is alot to blocking and this guy is just teaching the basics. Its good technique. He just illistates to use your hands. ITS IS BASIC. Hands and driving should be taught first. do you teach little kids?? that cant grasp to much at the sametime. So you teach them the two more important parts. STANCE, HANDS, AND DRIVING!!!
Apparently knuckle head you never played on the line or football!! Your ok coach, "the punch" is new to NDalumni, they didn't have this technique back when he was playing for the marching band (probably a flute player!!), during a ND game back in the 60's!!

you get no power just punching them, you need to chamber them to get some power in the initial hit

his reason is that on the 1st step you are chambering your hands to punch on the second step.
